Tee Keat strengthens grip on MCA with changes at The Star PDF Print

Consultant Editor, The Malaysian Insider

The end is near for Datuk Steven Tan, the man who turned The Star into a local media giant, after it was announced today that he would relinquish in six months his position as executive deputy chairman of the newspaper group.

Tan’s retirement was announced in a filing to Bursa Malaysia today, in what will be seen as a move by MCA president Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat to strengthen his grip on the party, which controls The Star.

However, the retirement of Tan, who has been a steady hand at the helm of The Star since the 1980s and who took the company from an also-ran to become Malaysia’s most profitable newspaper, could spook the stock market and fund managers.

The move is seen as an attempt by Ong, who was voted in as MCA president last October, to replace – in the party and its assets – those who are seen as close to former president Tun Dr Ling Liong Sik.

According to the company’s announcement, Tan will remain a non-executive director of the public-listed company, Star Publications (Malaysia) Berhad.

While no announcement was made about who his replacement would be, The Malaysian Insider understands that Datuk Clement Hii, who is chief executive officer of education group SEG International and a close friend of the party president, will be appointed to the board of the company but it is not clear if he will take over Tan’s position.

It is understood that Hii will become Ong’s point man on the board to help the MCA president direct policy in the newspaper.

Before SEG International, Hii, 49, had also worked as a journalist and was once the Chief Editor of The Borneo Post in Sarawak.

Speaking to reporters after chairing his party’s presidential council meeting, Ong declined to comment on the changes in the newspaper publisher.

Tan retired as The Star’s group managing director last June and was succeeded by Datin Linda Ngiam. It is still unclear whether Ngiam, a protege of Tan, will get to keep her job.

OTK will not be having a smooth ride when his deputy Dr Chua do not see eye to eye with him. With this there is a clear split in MCA and this invisible Team A and B will surely be at each other throats when the next election comes. Also OTK,as MCA president ,is openly practicing his policy of persecution against those who support his deputy. With this witch hunt ,MCA is once again heading for the boxing ring, with the chinese paying the ultimate price.

Media should not be owned by political, not even link to them to result in any influence.

Media ownership is one of the main contributor of Malaysia's rot today. Instead of reporting the true, they become the mouth piece of the powerful and the spinning machine.

Until they are free of political influence, just ignore them!

The source of financing for politicians who support, propogate, and perpetuate the erosion of Malaysian's citizens rights, liberties, and opportunities.

The are directly accountable for aiding and abetting the collective crimes against the Malaysian rakyat.

All rakyat (all malays, chinese, and indians) need to stand-up and defend themselves from this self-centered, self-serving politicians breed.

Rescue Malaysia....

MCA is playing their old familier tune and musical chairs. Nothing ever change except the men and women who find themselves collateral damage. The rakyat has to determine whether MCA has any more meaningful political role to play.

MCA's internal problems are not chinese problems,we chinese malysians hope that MCA can disappear from malaysian's politics the sooner the better.Without MCA,UMNO and other mosquito parties in the barisan, malaysia can perform much better.

BN is an incompetent political party,Malaysians have to agree on that and we have to change this government as soon as possible. They have been in power for too long at our expense.Time to change government !

What is the progress of the five PR states’ plan to the setting up a newspaper company?

This is a very good project and it must take off as soon as possible. Through it, the people especially those in the rural areas will know the truth.

Reporting in The Star will not change as long as the belong to MCA. The paper is none other than the mouth piece of BN. So why bother believing what they write. The truth is 'óut there' not The Star, NST or Utusan.

Lets just watch the infighting among the owners (MCA) and watch the high drama play out with the reshuffling of the board of directors who are pawns in the fight-out for control of the political mouth-piece.

How i wish to see the demise of the Star brought about by their very own politicians within MCA.

I almost vomit when i see OTK appear on TV, i feel him very unreal and has a "small heart", always act like a little guy and attacking his deputy. Shame on him.

I suggest Chua Soik Lek bring his supporter from Johor and whole malaysia join pakatan rakyat and prepare for the next GE. His son as a MP will given advantage to Pakatan too.

I hope Mr Chua can consider it. MCA is no longer a good place for ppl in malaysia.

Lets join pakatan rakyat.

Dr Chua Soi Lek, what are you still hanging around at MCA for? The fact remained, those ppl who exposed your personal indiscretions were from MCA. After that incident, more Chinese moved away from MCA. MCA is too proud & dripping with arrogance to realise this. It was a very bad move by those scumbags at MCA. That act worked against them. By next GE, we will slap MCA with our shoes smeared with dogshit.

I heard some people bought the star just to look for jobs. But many of us know, the star reporting is deliberately "skewered" or twisted and no longer represent the truth. It is no different from lying. Someone shld be held responsible for lying to the public. Someday this country shld pass a law (retrospective) to punish newspaper owners for lying. They shld be charged under the CPC with mandatory jail sentence. In Malaysia Bolehland, anythin' is psbl?
