Tan, 59, who is also the company's senior adviser, tendered a six-month notice beginning Jan 1, according to an announcement by Bursa Malaysia.

He has been the group managing director/chief executive officer for more than 22 years until he was replaced by Datin Linda Ngiam last June.

He was previously a financial journalist.

He remains a non-independent and non-executive director of the company.

Executive director Datuk Seri Kamal Hashim, 69, whose tenure ended on Dec 31, becomes a non-independent and non-executive director.

Datuk Oh Chong Peng, who recently resigned as director of Huaren Holdings, the holding company of The Star, becomes an independent and non-executive director of The Star.

He was previously a non-independent and non-executive director.

The 64-year-old chartered accountant also holds directorships in other companies, including Alliance Financial Group Bhd, British American Tobacco (Malaysia) Bhd, IJM Corporation Bhd, IJM Plantations Bhd, Kumpulan Europlus Bhd and Malayan Flour Mills Bhd.

My dear sisters and brothers. As the shareholder of the company called MALAYSIA, you have the absolute right to kick out these "directors" that you have errorneously appointed. If you find that they are not performing to your expectations, please feel free to exercise your right and freedom to vote them out at the next General Elections. The POWER is in yours/ours hand.
