(The Star) - Islam does not teach its followers to look down on other religions and their believers, but respect those of other faiths, says Perak Mufti Datuk Seri Dr Harussani Zakaria.

Dr Harussani, a recipient of this year’s Tokoh Maal Hijrah award, said:

“We do not condemn Jesus because he, too, is a prophet in Islam. Neither do we destroy the many temples and places of worship because our religion refrains us from doing so.”

He said religious and racial tolerance has been Malaysia’s strength and unique quality for the past 50 years, adding that if the country wanted to prosper, such a trait must be maintained.

“The rest of the world has always looked at Malaysia as an example where this is concerned,” he said when asked to comment on the existence of a blog that insulted Prophet Muhammad.

He said the racial and religious harmony enjoyed by Malaysians would end if irresponsible parties stopped being sensitive towards other people’s beliefs.

Dr Harussani, 69, said such actions would spark religious tensions as no one would tolerate it if their religion was to be condemned.

“This kind of behaviour is rude and uncalled for. I liken it to someone greeting another kindly but getting slapped or shouted at in return. Sooner or later, the person who greets will stop greeting and will retaliate,” he said yesterday.

Dr Harussani has often been criticised for being too frank, but he continued to speak what he felt was right.

“Sometimes, the truth hurts and can be rather bitter to stomach. But I cannot say otherwise because what is hak (right) is hak and what is wrong is wrong.

“I will continue to point out the wrong because it is my duty to do so, not only as a mufti but also as a Muslim,” he said.

For winning the Tokoh Maal Hijrah award, which is presented annually in conjunction with the Maal Hijrah celebration, he received RM100,000 from the Federal Government, RM20,000 from the Ubaidi Foundation, and a plaque and a gold medal from the Deputy Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Sultan Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah of Kedah.

Dr Harussani said the honour would encourage him to work harder, especially in getting those of other beliefs to understand Islam better.

“I am grateful and the recognition has humbled me. It has also given me new strength to continue with what I do because there are times when one feels that one is unappreciated,” he added.

When double standard is applied, there are bound to be race-provoking issues stirred. For instance, when Hindu temples were destroyed in Selangor, none of those people in the religious department or the high and mighty UMNO/BN Muslim politicians said anything against the outrageous and demeaning act of those involved. By turning mute against the despicable act is tantamount to encouraging more of such heinous behavior..

So, Dr. Harussani, now that you have received the award, I presume it is your duty and responsibility to set things right among the religious issues concerning other races..

Congrats Dr Harussani, you couldn't have said it better. Now religious extremists please learn a thing or two from this learned scholar. BTW should religion and politics mix? Isn't that oil and water? It would be good if you could give your thoughts on that to put a stop to all the bickering and whatnot.
thank you

Dr. Harussani, don't contradict yourself with mainstream of Islamic ideologies and teachings. Anyway, I give my 700% of your theory and view over this matter. Prosecution that I received during my early school in Sabah totally affected my whole view of Islam. You have given me more light in Islam. Thank you.

Dr Harussani Zakaria:

With much respect to you indicating the fact that slam does not teach its followers to look down on other religions and their believers, but respect those of other faiths.

The religion tension will definitely and surely be a thing of the past when BN politicians learn how to exploit religious issues into political advantage to become a populous issue.

The fact is BN politicians encourages political religious propaganda by dictating to the professional and learned muftis to play to their tunes. Can you recall the Saiful- Anwar Sodomy case?

Leave the religious to the AGONG of Malaysia. The King has better advisors than the BN politicians.

This was the guy who organised a demonstration in front of a Church protesting against the alleged conversion of Muslims to Christianity. It turned out to be a hoax. I rest my case.

I wonder what would be his opinion and comment on RPK's strive in promoting Islam?

Lets ask him and see how he answers them in front of the UMNO warlords.....

Datuk Seri Dr Harussani Zakaria,

What if your wrongs are pointed out? What if the flaws in your religious laws are pointed? The real test is when you are the receiving end of the wrongs being pointed out. Otherwiuse, it is just religious hypocrisy!

Hmmm, from the heading, I thought this was from the honourable and much respected Mufti of Perlis who HAD to resign. I wonder if this Mufti of Perak is just making 'correct' noises.

Mr.Smith said ....I rest my case, me too.

Perhaps a saying in Chinese has a bearing, "Chian San E Kai, Pen Sin Nan E" that I picked up, it sounds something like...."It is easier to move mountain than to change a person(such a person)".

panca, I like that when you say, "chian San E kai, pen sin nan E". allow me to translate, " the flow of River Chiang can be altered easily, but our own demeanor or inborn characters can never be changed or ammended."

Chinese words have its unique essence when any situation could be described using a few Chinese characters. I know it always amazes me how our ancestors could be so intelligent, compared to the present generation, who rather resort to short-cutting the language till it loses its beauty and craftmanship.

Thank you, panca for that little phrase, whatever you might call it...have a pleasant evening!

this religious scholar was an hypocrite and a racial bigot to the core before the HRH Perak Sultan and his esteemed Prince gave him some religious lessons...so guys in MT who are actually praising him, keep all the credits at bay as he will turn into a freak once more....

Congratulations! Perak Mufti Datuk Seri Dr Harussani Zakaria, a recipient of this year’s Tokoh Maal Hijrah award.
I'm disturbed by what you have done by inciting a demonstration at Silibin Church against a Catholic event. I still prefer the moderate ex-Perlis Mufti Dr. Asri over you.
Nevertheless, since you are bouyed by your RM120,000 reward, will you take the first step to meet with the Malaysian Consultative Council of Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Sikhism and Taoism (MCCBCHST) and hold a dialogue?
Better still to show your sincerity and calls for respect for other faiths send a representative to this council.
MCCBCHST has made calls upon all concerned Malaysians especially our own Buddhist, Christian, Hindu, Sikh and Taoist communities to say special prayers in these critical times in the life of the nation. Will the revered Tokoh Maal Hijrah winner encourage active participation?
Will he speak out against the Home Ministry's unilateral action of denying other faiths in using the word "Allah" in their worship?
Much damage has been done and I hope he will demonstrate his will through his actions rather than rhetorics.

I agreed with what the Mufti Perak said about Islam, but the Mufti Perak seems to forget that he is ain't one of them as a Muslim. Remember what he did last year with his statement on other religions and converts? Talk is cheap, but you must recall what you did before; before issuing press statement.
