(The Star) KOTA BARU: Kelantan Umno has told PAS to stop blaming others for its failure to implement the hudud and qisas laws.
State liaison committee chairman Tan Sri Annuar Musa said some Umno leaders were angry that PAS had continued to blame the party for its inability to implement such laws. “When Kelantan PAS tabled the hudud legislation (in early 2000), it was supported by state Umno backbenchers. So, blaming Umno is a blatant lie,” Annuar said in an interview. He said PAS vice-president Datuk Husam Musa was lying when he blamed Umno as the stumbling block in its plan to introduce the Islamic law. Annuar conceded that PAS was right in stating that hudud is a requirement under Islamic governance since it originated directly from “Allah” (God). “However, in a multi-ethnic and multi-religious country with a Federal Constitution drawn on that fact, adopting the Islamic law is difficult. Furthermore, PAS did not conduct a proper study on the matter,” he said. Annuar said Umno as a party did not reject the Islamic criminal law but some individual members might have a stronger stand against it, thus the civil action filed by then Umno Kota Baru division head Datuk Zaid Ibrahim in 2000 when PAS had wanted to implement the law. He said if PAS was insistent on implementing hudud and qisas laws with the consent of its partners in Pakatan Rakyat, then Kelantan Umno would proposed to supreme council to support it. “No point waiting until PAS takes over the Federal Government. They can do it now in the five states under Pakatan governance,” he added. Annuar said PAS should be given the benefit of the doubt by DAP and PKR to implement hudud and qisas in Kedah, Penang, Perak, Selangor and Kelantan.
