(Bernama) Proton Holdings Bhd has not been served with any summons by the Chinese joint venture (JV) partner, Goldstar Heavy Industrial Co Ltd, and therefore was not aware of the basis of the purported claim, it said in a reply to Bursa Malaysia query.

Bursa Malaysia queried the national carmaker on a news report that said Goldstar was claiming RM520 million from Proton for breach of contract.

Proton also confirmed the JV company still existed though it never commenced business operations due to the failure of Goldstar to meet its contractual obligations including procuring the necessary approvals from the relevant authority/ies in China.

"The parties have referred the dispute to arbitration, in accordance with the spirit of the JV agreement," it said.

Proton's JV collaboration, signed in early 2002, was to assemble Waja cars and make parts in China, tap the vibrant growth in the world's populous nation as well as cater to its neighbouring countries.

The JV involved Proton taking up a 49 percent stake in Goldstar for RM85.5 million.

One of the worst destruction of wealth implemented by Mahakutty is Proton.Through this,Malaysians is paying through their nose for other models of cars e.g Camry without tax is about 97K but with sales and excise taxes is about 167K.Not to mention the lost opportunity of being the Detriot of Asean because of our protectionist policy towards this condemn car called Proton. The poor resale value of this tin can is another sad story to be told.

What and see first. Proton is seen to be very unprofession from all the dropped deal. I wonder how many times, or how thick Proton's face is to go back to the Mat Salleh whom they have kept rejecting in the past.

It would be alright if the car is performing ok but paying so much for a national crap car is amounting to daylight robbery. This is done by raising all import taxes and excise so that Proton can compete in the auto market. What can we expect anyway?

They might have paid the Chinese millions of $US and settled the case out of court. Still the money paid for out of court settlement must be pretty hefty!
