Datuk Seri Najib Razak's decision not to announce the BN candidate last Saturday when he was in Kuala Terengganu has, in fact, set tongues wagging that things have not been finalised.

THE CORRIDORS OF POWER

Zubaidah Abu Bakar, New Straits Times

THE Kuala Terengganu by-election has more drama now with the possibility that it could turn into a five-cornered if not six-cornered fight.

This seat, which has seen classic contests between Umno and Pas, is also being eyed by others this time, including individuals running as independents.

Kuala Terengganu saw a three-cornered fight in March when 89-year-old grandmother Maimun Yusuf sprung a surprise when she announced her candidacy. Although she maintained that she had funded her own campaign, some believe there were a few politicians backing her.

Maimun is eyeing a second attempt and she is likely to get some funding to enable her to fulfil her dream. Some supporters are trying to raise money for her. And if it is true that she had been compensated by local politicians and businessmen after losing her deposit when managing only 686 votes nine months ago, she is likely be at the nomination centre again on Jan 6.

Another March 8 loser, Isma Airfath Hassanuddin from Kelantan, upstaged Barisan Nasional and Pas by being the first to announce his candidacy on Sunday.

Isma or Kosing, as the 44-year-old introduced himself, had contested the Rantau Pajang parliamentary seat in Kelantan in the last general election. He claims to be self-financed, although there are whispers of third-party involvement.

Angkatan Keadilan Insan Malaysia is also interested in fielding a candidate.

The local circle is abuzz about another possible candidate -- a young local businessman who, it is said, would be making his announcement soon.

These, however, are mere sideshows to the two "real" candidates -- from Umno and Pas.

Datuk Seri Najib Razak's decision not to announce the BN candidate last Saturday when he was in Kuala Terengganu has, in fact, set tongues wagging that things have not been finalised.

Several local Umno leaders, including Deputy Home Minister Datuk Wan Ahmad Farid Wan Salleh, insisted that it was a tactical decision to prevent the handing over of oil royalty payments to the state government from being overshadowed.

But others are saying that Ahmad Farid, the Kuala Terengganu Umno division chief, is no longer the hot favourite.

The name of Zuber Embong, a 44-year-old senior state education officer, is now on the lips of many. Zuber, who was offered a chance at the Pas stronghold of Wakaf Mempelam previously, is said to have an edge, securing votes from 2,000 of the state education fraternity.

The rumour mill in Pas is equally active, especially in pro-Pas blogs, with some promoting state Pas commissioner Datuk Mustaffa Ali, party vice-president and former candidate Mohamad Sabu and Batu Burok assemblyman Syed Azman Syed Ahmad Nawawi.

Things are expected to be clearer in a couple of days on the Pas front as party president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang is now back from the haj.

But Pas will only announce its candidate on Jan 1, after the party's central committee meeting.

This will be a keenly contested battle since BN won the seat by a slim 628-vote majority through Umno candidate, the late Datuk Razali Ismail.

An independent poll conducted last week found that victory for Umno or Pas would only be by about a 1,000-vote difference in the constituency which has more than 80,000 voters.

An independent poll? Huh! There is nothing called independent in Malaysia. You remember what the pollsters said about Pas, DAP and PKR in the run-up to March 08? They said they will "secure" 40-50 seats and PKR will get 6 seats at most. What happened then? PR won and BN rigged itself in. Anyway, the Chinese will give the PR candidate 110% support because their destiny is at stake and only PAS and PKR and DAP can protect all Malaysians and take care of the needy in all communities. PAS will win with 3,000-4,000 votes (insya Allah). Just watch this space. For the Malays, Umno will get 45% while PAS will get 55% and voila!

No matter who umno chooses as candidate for the KT by-election I can assure you that umno will miserably fall flat on it's face once again and the shame will be twice as bad compared to Permatang Pauh smilies/grin.gif

The rakyat has seen the folly of umno/bn's government uncovered by PKR government and the people has seen how umno/bn gomen debated that shows the caliber (the lack of it) of their ministers. Berbuih-buih cakap tapi semuanya kosong, mencarut dalam kabinet, bertengkar macam bebudak, does the rakyat of KT want ministers of such quality from umno/bn? smilies/grin.gif

Never be complacent, be very cautious.

BN has indicated that this is a by-election that they MUST win!.......ahem!(by hook or by crook)???

PR must make sure that their supporters are out in full force with video cameras on hand to record all the misdeeds, trickeries or outright threats towards voters or volunteers by their supporters or by government machineries. Any such recorded activities must be safeguarded for upload onto youtube to fully expose any cheatings or misuse of government machineries.

Out-think them to render all their cheatings useless at the KT by-election. When enough exposures are made of the cheatings, the rakyat would be better informed of the underhanded manners of the BN in their effort to retain power! The power of the rakyat will then be in full fury in the next general election.

By getting their puppets (PDRM,ACA) to play to their tune, the BN is on the right path towards giving the PR a big victory. KT folks exercise your rights by shoving out BN.

This Country is still in the stone age . The incumbents in the Ruling Party are still tribal in nature to demonize.-- politics in Malaysia in the smaller districts is still in its bygone era .
Getting detached from UMNO , like DSAI , Zaid -- perform better as they know the holes in the sieve.
Be ready for episodes of destruction tactics by UMNO to safeguard their roads to plunder!

To the good people of Trengganu, fellow Malaysian, pls open your eye on the corruptions and Millions of Ringgit belonging to the Rakyat, wasted on failed projects and commission paid to the privileged. There is no accountability. Tolong beritahu kepada semua, saudara, ibu-bapa, kawan, jiran....... Gomen mesti di tukar. Rakyat mesti ambil balik negara.

All the wasted millions could have help the poor, built universities, better housing.... tetapi sekarang ramai masih miskin......

The BN can field a Goliath in the KT By-Election. The PAS has only to field a 'semut' as the saying goes ' Even an Ant can drop an Elephant. The Pakatan has proven to be a clean and trustworthy coalition. In a short while they have proven
themselves in the 5 states being governed by them. The People of Trengganu cannot be hood-winked by the BN Govt. by throwing millions of ringgit as the election is around the corner. They should have done so over the years and not showing this unhealthy move as this will be rejected by the Rakyat as what happened during the March 8 Election (Kelantan) and the recent Permatang Pauh By-Election. The Rakyat will show their wrath in this by-election. The BN is being closely watched in their crude performance in the Dewan Rakyat. The Rakyat of Trengganu are smart and just see the outcome of the by-election result. smilies/cheesy.gif
