(The Star) KUALA LUMPUR: Police are tracing those behind the unregistered organisation known as Jaringan Rakyat Tertindas (Jerit), said Deputy Inspector General of Police Tan Sri Ismail Omar.
He said police were looking into the activities of the group which had been active in recent months and had organised activities that allegedly flouted the law. “This group has organised a series of rallies and mass gatherings without our approval as well as allowing children to take part in their campaigns,” he said yesterday. “We have also noticed that a few politicians have been exploiting the campaign for their own interests.” Ismail said whether the characters involved were influential or not was immaterial. He warned the public not to take part in any campaigns or activities organised by the group. The “Cycling For Change” campaign organised by the group began in Kedah and Johor early last month and is scheduled to end this Thursday with the participants handing over a memorandum to the Prime Minister at Parliament House. The expedition is campaigning for the protection of workers during the financial crisis, the abolition of the ISA, comfortable housing for the people, proper control on the price of goods, an end to the privatisation of basic facilities and the restoration of local council elections.
