Bill Clinton... you’re talking to the deaf PDF Print

If Clinton wanted to make a real difference to Malaysia, I would have urged him to give the same speech to members of Umno or the BN supreme council, and Parliament. These are the people who need to hear the message about inclusiveness and not divisiveness. These are the people who decide the worldview of Malaysians. These are the people who continue to divide the nation. The Ali Average on the street is doing no such thing.

James Chin for The Malaysian Insider

Two of the world's biggest icons were in town last week; Bill Clinton and Shah Rukh Khan. One came to pick up US$200,000 (or RM700,000) for 40 minutes of talking and the other made a day trip to Malacca to collect a Datukship. We Malaysians are such a generous lot, always giving stuff to foreigners. (Is that the reason why there are more than 2 million undocumented foreigners in this country?)

Anway, before I proceed, let me declare my interest. I was given one of the rare tickets to attend Clinton's talk. Bill is one of the best speakers around, and the message he gave was a worthy one. Essentially he was saying that we live in an interdependent world and that all of us are humans. He gave the example that the difference between all the ethnic groups around the world is less than 0.5 per cent of our DNA. In other words we are divided by ethnic categories which are essentially man-made.

I'm sure many of us know that racism and ethnic identity is constructed and not something natural. Yet today Malaysia is more divided by ethnicity (and religion) than at anytime in our nation's short history. Every politician is trying to tell us that "ethnic solidarity" is the only political game in town. It's always an "us versus them" attitude.

Clinton was reminding us that we have a choice to make —  we can either work together and become prosperous or fight between ourselves over the >0.5 per cent DNA difference between us.

It was interesting to note that Clinton's message, which is so obvious to all the members of the audience, did not sink in. All the mainstream press did not report what he said other than the minor points about making money from green technology. His message that we are all similar was either not written up or given a short paragraph.

It's a real shame that reporters and their editors are so dead set on the race mindset that they cannot bring themselves to print something else.

Which brings me to my point.

Bill was paid more than RM700K to talk for less than one hour. An average worker in Malaysia makes RM26,000 annually. Simple calculations will tell you that it will take Ali Average 27 years to earn what the former US president got in less than one hour.

Put in another way, I would have been happier if Clinton had announced that he was donating the US$200,000 to some charity homes in Malaysia. He does not even need the money — in fact, the fee he charged, the US$200,000, is much less than what he normally gets for such speaking engagements. He commands up to US$1 million or more for a speech.

Does Shah Rukh Khan deserve a Datukship? The answer is obvious. Yes, why not? We have given out Datukships to people who are obviously less than the King of Bollywood. Mind you, the Datukship we gave him is an honorary one because he is not a Malaysian citizen. So don't hold your breath waiting for him to use the "Datuk" in the movie posters or when he signs for a bill.

Not really sure what you are trying to say but you need to regard Bill as a consultant, where his paymasters (Petra, i think) paid him to talk. He doesnt need to care about Malaysia nor need to donate any money to charity because this is his job. 200k is alot but if anything, blame the IDIOT that was willing to pay for the speech and not the person who is making the speech.

UMNOputras are the people who continue to divide the nation. The Ali Average on the street is doing no such thing. Correct, UMNOputras just want to remain as Malays and not Malaysians. That's why their attitudes and actions are always divisive and not inclusive of the average Ah Chong, Samy and others. That's why they insist on "Ketuanan Melayu" That's why race relations in the country is consistently moving backwards. Hence, only a change of the ruling party will give us hope. No vote for UMNO/BN!

Let's send UMNO to hell in this coming by-election in KT. UMNO is never for the malays or for the nation. It is for themselves to get rich. Look at all those UMNO leaders ladies -- all jaded in gold necklaces etc driven around in black merc's. Flaunting their ill gotten richness with no impunity.

Hi James Chin, do you think those UMNO PUTRAS will listen or pay any attention to Bill Clinton??

Definetly NO, these people are blinded by POWER AND GREED. They are afraid of NO ONE, not even Allah.

The only way is NOT TO VOTE FOR BN.

Newspapers are controlled by the government. Reporters/editors do not want to land up in Kamunting. It is normal for high profile personalities to be paid a good fee. Even MM Lee Kuan Yew admitted this "I can earn $100,000-200,000 by giving a talk to a group of bankers who have brought their clients together."

VS of Petra should be proud of himself, made the headlines TWICE last week for all the wrong reasons (sued by Bruce Willis for unpaid investment USD700K and Tunku Imran resigning himself from Petra) and making another headline for paying USD200K for Bill Clinton to speak 40mins (I think Clinton's junket to Malaysia probably cost another USD100K). I will avoid investing or anything to do with Petra (and Green Rubber) seeing how it conducts itself so strangely commercially.

Clinton doesn't need the money, but neither do big Hollywood names, but they're entitled to charge for performing their parts, whatever that may be, so let's not turn him into some kind of scrooge. What he does with his money is also not for us to dictate and we certainly cannot assume that he does not give some of it to charity. The point is, he had a price and whoever brought him in knew that and was willing to pay. Is what he said worth the money? I don't think he said anything earth shattering or you couldn't have heard him say if you watched out for him on TV. He's paid for being who he is. I don't think anyone expected it to be a life-changing experience, Umno or not. People paid not because they thought he would change the course of our future. They paid just to be in the same room with the 42nd president of the US. No more, no less.

UMNO conspires in all ways to show a holy face , and its like the itch on their backs --- you scratch my back and i scratch yours!! -- an example of this---The Al Jazeera interview of our Pete---- take a close look of who the lady caller was ---- an UMNO implant!! See the question she asked RPK ----- totally irrelevant --- and she sounded like she was never living in Malaysia for 51 . years!
