The Straits Times

SECURITY analysts were taken by surprise yesterday when they found out that Malaysia had released terrorist Yazid Sufaat and more than a dozen Jemaah Islamiah detainees in the past month.

They believe Yazid, who had links to the Al-Qaeda, still poses a security threat to Singapore and other countries.

However, they are not alarmed by the move, pointing to the cooperation between Singapore and Malaysia, as well as other neighbouring countries, in dealing with terror threats.

'Singapore's threat monitoring is very robust,' said Dr John Harrison, of the International Centre for Political Violence and Terrorism Research at Nanyang Technological University (NTU).

'I'm sure they are working closely with their partners in Malaysia and elsewhere to make sure threats don't develop and mature.'

Analysts like Dr Rohan Gunaratna are also confident of Malaysia's assessment of the danger Yazid poses.

'Certainly, the Malaysians would have thought it through carefully,' said Dr Gunaratna, who heads the NTU centre.

News of the release of the Indonesian, Malaysian and Filipino detainees was published in The Straits Times yesterday.

A Malaysian official had told the newspaper that they were freed after a government advisory board at Perak's Kamunting Detention Centre said they were no longer a security threat.

Singapore's Home Affairs Ministry, when asked to comment on the release, noted that Singapore will continue to 'work closely with our regional partners on counter-terrorism, which includes exchanging intelligence'.

Also, 'regional authorities, including Singapore, have taken strong action in arresting and detaining terrorist elements within their respective jurisdictions', the ministry added in its statement to The Straits Times yesterday.

However, Dr Gunaratna believes security agencies should keep a close watch on Yazid, for three reasons.

One, the 43-year-old, who was arrested in December 2001, had allowed two terrorists to use his home in Kuala Lumpur. They were Khalid al-Midhar and Nawaf al-Hazmi, hijackers of the plane that crashed into the Pentagon, the US military headquarters, on Sept 11, 2001.

Two, Yazid, a former army captain, is a biochemist who had headed an Al-Qaeda anthrax programme on using the deadly biological agent for terror attacks.

Three, he had a hand in terrorist attacks in Indonesia and had travelled extensively in the region, including Singapore.

'Yazid Sufaat is one of the most dangerous terrorists in Asia,' said Dr Gunaratna.

But, he added: 'The Malaysian Special Branch is a very professional organisation, and their assessment of Yazid Sufaat should not be doubted.'

Singapore has over the years released JI detainees too, after assessing that they no longer posed a threat. In the past six years, more than 30 have been freed.

Their release depends on, among other things, their response to a rehabilitation programme that includes religious counselling by a volunteer group of Muslim experts in Islamic theology.

In Malaysia, however, not much is known publicly about its rehabilitation programme, said Dr Kumar Ramakrishna, head of the Centre of Excellence for National Security at the S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies.

But the analysts interviewed believe Malaysia would take the necessary steps to ensure Yazid is not a threat.

They noted especially the restrictions on his movements. He cannot leave Selangor, his resident state, without the approval of its police chief.

Dr Kumar also took heart from the cooperation between the security agencies of Singapore and Malaysia.

He noted how they acted in concert in arresting JI terrorists in December 2001, soon after the Sept 11 attacks.

However, the need to stay vigilant cannot be over-emphasised.

Said the MHA: 'The pervasive threat of international terrorism means that Singapore, like many other countries, needs to remain alert to the potential threat posed by any terrorist element, remain vigilant and maintain stringent border security measures to deter and prevent the entry of terrorists.'

just like MM2H(malaysia my second home), maybe government want to promote MMTH(malaysia my terrorist hub).
Malaysia had JI head living in this country as PR, and have been accused of supporting terrorist from southern Thailand/southern phillipines/ Aceh etc. The deal with Abu sayaf to populate sabah with muslims was another reason we have to be weary of the govenrment and their inteligence agencies.

In a pathetic attempt to demonstrate that ISA is being used judiciously, this bungling government has come across as incapable of separating the woods from the trees, overconfident in their ability to "reform" detainees, and does not have a clear idea what constitutes threat to national security.

First question that comes to everyone's minds - if they can find it responsible to release none other than Jemaah Islamayah and such other potential terrorists, why the hell are they doing keeping Hindraf 5??

It would appear that a threat to national security is not as important as a threat to UMNO, because Hindraf 5 represents legitimate grouses of a sidelined and repressed community long to find equal placing in Malaysia, THEIR home.

It seems that the failure of UMNO to lead equitably disables them from entertaining Hindraf issues in an inclusive manner. And therefore the only thing they could do expeditiously is to attempt to "reform" the detainees and sweep pressing problems faced by the Indian community under the carpet.

And that's what I say is the even bigger bungle of this government. Releasing JI suspects, and keeping Hindraf 5, makes the government look even less judicious. I doubt the bumbling incompetent fools even realise that when they were processing the political implications of the release.

Stop being chicken-livered slushy cow dung trembling at every soft foot step. State terror and the state police / war machine is a thousand times more murderous and more brutal than any individual without any evidence against him of any wrong doing. Stop this kiasu reaction to the Govt action of purposely provoking you by releasing suspected (unproven) "terrorists". Repeal the ISA!

Of course! They are alarmed and how stupid our Home Minister is (and even at our STUPID Government who continues to put up with Mr Akhbar's crap). This is the same man that regards a writer, journalist, activists and politicians to be threat to national security. This same person is now saying the terrorists has been 'rehabilitated'.

Firstly, where are the proof? As there is no court in ISA, noone can have a real opinion besides our Home Minister. This is Malaysia's safety Mr Akhbar! Bring EVERYONE in ISA to court to see if they are guilty and let our courts judge this so the people can have a piece of mind... not you! you have demonstrated that you are not qualified (from every single perspective!) to do so.

Malaysia is a confused state now. The government is riddled with a lot riddles that no ordinary person can solve. The politics is a day-to-day management without much thought to longterm planning for socio-economic development which should form the basis for uniting the people not for dividing them. Let us make a change at least in GE13.

The Indian Navy sank an unarmed Thai trawler off Somalia and is completely unrepentent about it. The Indian police regularly kill Kashmiris protesting against police brutality. The Indian police almost always stand idly by while mobs burn "untouchables" alive. Is Indian state terror any better?

Please look at both sides of the coin when making judgements. The ISA on the other hand is pure evil against humanity. It takes away freedom without trial often at the whim and fancy of powerful individuals.

The ISA is not really effective against terrorism. The really effective tool against terrorism is good police intelligence work, not shoddy imprisonment without trial. Mumbai tragedy proves this. The ISA is a tool in UMNO hands for suppression of opposition against its rule - pure and simple.

The ISA is an admission by the Malaysian police that they are incapable of good intelligence work and professional competence. Are you going to pander to incompetence of people legally allowed to carry and use guns as well as imprison people without trial?

Don't you see what is happening? In order to increase the budget spending on security or military in this case, you need to create a threat. What better more than to release a dangerous terrorist and suddenly The Defense Minister realise that we must spend more to buy weapons, protective suits, detectors and so on. All this doing is just to create business opportunities to those who are connected.
