(The Star) THE people and Parliament have to decide if they want to reinstate the royal immunity, says Sultan of Selangor.

In an exclusive interview with Mingguan Malaysia, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah said the question should also be discussed and decided by the Conference of Rulers.

Personally, he would not ask the people to reinstate the royal immunity, he said.

“If my people feel that I am entitled to it, I will accept it and I will do my best.

“Whatever happens, let the people and the Parliament decide on the matter because it was Parliament that took away the royal immunity.

“In fact, the Malays had brought up the matter then. I will not ask for it back. My duty as the Sultan is to do my best. I took the oath to take very good care of my state and to ensure my people’s well being — that’s my duty,” he said.

The Regent of Negri Sembilan Tunku Naquiyuddin Tuanku Ja’afar recently called on the immunity to be reinstated so that constitutional monarchy could be restored to its full sovereignty.

Tunku Naquiyuddin had said that if the Ruler were to exercise his duties in a fair, just and impartial manner to protect the Federal Constitution, his sovereignty needed to be protected too.

Sultan Sharafuddin said it might be more appropriate to introduce royal immunity with certain conditions attached.

“I do not agree if I have the immunity not to pay back debts or to beat up people to the point they can’t even get justice,” he said.

> Berita Minggu highlighted a warning by Umno vice-president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin to candidates of the March party polls not to take advantage of the Kuala Terengganu by-election to campaign for themselves.

He said they should focus their efforts to retain the seat and avoid bringing up personal sentiments which could split the ranks.

“The party polls is still a long way off in March. We don’t want any obstacle or distraction,” he said, adding that Umno members must take the by-election seriously as the Barisan Nasional candidate only won the seat in the last general election by a narrow margin.

Either we have a referendum or PR will incorporate the proposal in the next election manifesto. What ever, UMNO will shiver and our DR MMamak will have sleepless nights.

""Sultan Sharafuddin said it might be more appropriate to introduce royal immunity with certain conditions attached.""

A very wise statement from an esteemed Ruler. The people who supported TDM should wake up to this calls by the Rulers to see a more merited involvement in the affairs of the Nation. The space for the Ruling govt to usurp power and leave the people untenable will have to be reinforced in ways by this change.
The parrots who said --AYE! to TDM when he walked on the Constitution with dirty feet -- should do some homework now than look the other way distracted !

Okay, we have decided.

The rulers will not have immunity for criminal charges.

The rulers and their immediate families may have immunity from civil proceedings provided;

1. they do not take loans and sign guarantees,
2. they do not act as directors in companies.

Everything else we can kau tim!

The best campaign factor for pakatan rakyat in KT elections is the restoration of the original text of our constitution formulated by our beloved founding fathers that had been systematically and continually raped and sodomised by the rapacious and sodomite BN and UMNO government. Once the original constitution is restored, all the racial sentiments that were stirred by UMNO/BN component parties will die down and as properly stated in our true original constitution, the special rights of the Malays should be rightfully vested in our beloved and much loved Sultans. Patek sokong and mohon ampun Tuanku Duli-Duli Sultan.

if we grant them immunity, maybe current sultans will do their jobs well, righteously, and with pride. but who knows what will happen to future sultans who will take the immunity for granted?

if immunity is granted with certain conditions attached, then what is the point of granting immunity?

i think the sultans should NOT be granted immunity, but should be granted with more POWER instead. dont let parliament decide everything. parliament is made up of useless douchebags anyway. good example: after landslide, it took najib and bodohwi less than 48 hours to issue a ban on hillside development project. they didn't even know what caused the landslide. this is a good example of stupid people too eager to show their stupidity. we should grant sultan powers like, if you as an MP speak bodoh-ly all the time, then you should have your tongue cut out or something.

How about applicable only to the Agung? It is not a bad idea after all. We cannot on one hand, complain that the Agung does not seem to be supporting the rakyat, and on the other we do not wish to give him more power. One cannot have the cake and eat it all at the same time! This power is only valid for 5 yrs to carry out his duties effectively, with immunity not applicable to criminal and civil suits. I am sure a good Agong knows his duties, and shall be above all these. As Sultan Sharafuddin said, it might be more appropriate to introduce royal immunity with certain conditions attached. Certain guilty members of the royal families should have learnt their lessons by now, and realise that the rakyat is not going to accept their misdeeds as easily as before. I am a bit of a romantic, and I love the royalty. Malaysia is not the same without royalty, as England is not the same without royalty. Most of them are good and sensible rulers whom have not done the rakyat any harm. I would not say the same for our UMNO leaders, who should be shot down! It is like the ratio of good and bad :- UMNO 95% rotten: 5% good. Royalty 5% bad: 95% good. So please do not take it out on the Royalty ... go after UMNO!

Yes, the rulers should be given immunity attached with some restriction such as criminal offences and breech of conduct.

Judging from the present situation, the ruling party behaves like uncrowned kings. Their short-comings: Misuse of power, rampant corruption, implementation of jungle law to suppress those they perceive as threat to them, uneven distribution of opportunities meant for the people, misuse of people's money through nation's coffer, misuse of islamic religion to create stirring up racial unrest, and worse of all, is the unbecoming behavior of the UMNO regime whose members display disregard of interest of the rakyat as a whole..

We need the rulers to act as check and balance so that the scale does not tilt heavily on the wayward side. The rulers should be given the rights to rectify whatever is not right that takes place in the country. The country is the rulers' territory, it is their domain, and it is their prerogative to ensure everything under charge runs according to rules and order...

I support wholeheartedly that immunity should be accorded to the rulers with certain restricted clauses as mentioned above.

After Malaysia percapita income exceeds Singaporeans, we can spend about time discussing this issue. Meanwhile I think Malaysian has better thing to do.
