Scraping the Bottom of the Barrel

Personally, I don't see a problem with people not believing in God. I mean, God has been used as an excuse for bigotry, bias, irrational behaviour, misguided education, and even suicide.

By Hafidz Baharom, The Nut Graph

Atheism

THE Rukunegara's first principle emphasises belief in God, in case anyone has forgotten.

In our Federal Constitution, Article 11 upholds freedom of religion.

Personally, I view both items to be out of touch with the rakyat of today.

During a recent roundtable on the future of this country, I said that as a democracy, Malaysia is not moving fast enough to bring its laws, concepts, and constitution into the 21st century.

For example, we amended our Federal Constitution to include the concept of gender equality only in 2001.

Going back to what the Rukunegara and constitution say about God and religion — do we have a problem with people who don't believe in God altogether?

Is there an absence of morality among these citizens?

If not, then shouldn't Article 11 be reviewed and amended to uphold freedom of “belief”?

Accordingly, shouldn't Article 8 then also state that there shall be no discrimination against citizens on the ground only of belief (instead of religion), race, descent, place of birth or gender?

The God Delusion
Book cover for The God Delusion

In this day and age, when a book like The God Delusion is widely available to the masses, the matter of religion should be a private one. Therefore, it should not be used in the scrutiny of laws, concepts, or even the Federal Constitution for that matter.

Personally, I don't see a problem with people not believing in God. I mean, God has been used as an excuse for bigotry, bias, irrational behaviour, misguided education, and even suicide.

Religion is also being used as a tool for idiocy.

For instance, how can you use religion as an excuse to ban a healthy activity like yoga?

Or to tell women how to dress, so they don't look or act too much like men?

Hostility towards dialogue

Frankly, I'll just focus on my religion, Islam, in this rant of mine. Because apparently, if you criticise someone else's religion you can be detained without trial and fed food fit for dogs.

In Islam, there is a concept called amar ma'ruf, nahi munkar which basically means “practising good, rejecting evil”. And this is of course congruent with the teachings of other religions.

So how could Muslims say that ours is the only correct religion in the world and the hereafter, and yet won't even hold inter-faith dialogues to argue why we believe this?

In fact, some of us were so scared that we held protests in Penang when the umbrella group of non-governmental organisations called Article 11 held a forum there in 2006.

So you can forgive me for getting the shock of my life when I read the article Overcoming religious sensitivity by Md Asham Ahmad of the Institute of Islamic Understanding Malaysia (Ikim). The shock, of course, comes from the fact that Ikim is finally asking for people to be less sensitive towards the issue of religion. Asham says:

“It is senseless to restrain people from the urge to know and understand the environment in which they live. It is akin to reinforcing ignorance, which is actually at the root of fanaticism and racism. Instead, why don't we make discussion concerning religion something interesting, enjoyable, and beneficial to all?”

And then he continues:

“To understand and to be understood we need to talk. If we do not talk about religion how are we going to understand it, and make others understand it? How are we going to eliminate misunderstandings about it, and differentiate truth from falsehood?”

I honestly think the same also applies for discussions on laws pertaining to religion.

Zulkifli Nordin

When the Bar Council recently held a talk to discuss the laws involved in religious conversions, again it was certain Muslim groups who somehow saw this as a threat to Islam.

One of the protesters was Parti Keadilan Rakyat Member of Parliament for Kulim-Bandar Baru, Zulkifli Nordin, who was recently interviewed by The Nut Graph. Zulkifli's positions on Islam have been contradictory, at best, and downright hostile, at worst.

Out of touch

I find the views of religious conservatives truly out of touch with the times.

For example, instead of having events and concerts banned for every single person, why not just advise Muslims not to attend these events, and let them come to their own conclusions?

Why instead disrespect the non-Muslims who want to enjoy such entertainment?

Are we, as an entire nation, not supposed to cater for the entire community, and not just to Muslims?

Even then, by disallowing Muslims to attend such events, are we actually stopping immorality?

Sure, you ban an Inul concert, but will that actually stop people from viewing her gyrations on a VCD, or even on YouTube?

Are the numbers of mat rempits, drug addicts, rapists, and robbers somehow decreasing with this new-found zeal in moral policing?

Religion is, without a doubt, one way of enforcing a person to live a moral life. However, most religions forget or totally disregard that biologically, human beings come with a brain capable enough of helping them make moral decisions of their own.

Conference
Religion needs to be discussed to foster understanding
(© Sachin Ghodke / sxc.hu)
Didn't the prophet Abraham wander the earth, looking for a God to worship before he came to the conclusion that God wasn't there, but all-encompassing?

Even the so-called guardians of religion are not without fault. I mean, since the Mufti of Perak forwarded an SMS alleging the apostasy of mariner Datuk Azhar Mansor, isn't the mufti himself guilty of fitnah (slander)?

With this in mind, I think people should seriously consider first following religious edicts themselves, even before going about using religious injunctions against any other human being.

Thus, I also think the Rukunegara and constitution should be amended to include those who may not believe in God, but are moral enough to be courteous compared with some “defenders of the religion”.

Ahmad Hafidz Baharom is a paradox. He's an anti-smoking chain smoker, an environmentalist who leaves his office lights on, a centrist who's a lalang, and a twentysomething yuppie who dreams of being a slacker. Basically, he's a lovable moron.

No wonder until today, I couldn't find a GOD that I can trust. Worse, when soon they expect me to accept a politician who claims to be GOD!

He's the GOD of all evils. Corruption, murders, adultery, stealing and so many more sins. This self proclaim GOD is soon to be the 6th Prime Minister of Malaysia.

Politicians who use GOD's name are Munafiq! Stone them to death! I guess the writer is trying to tell the politicians not to mix religion with their dirty politics.

I actually have my own GOD, guess who? BTW, I'm not telling because I'm not sharing. Why? One man's meat is another man's poison.

There is no need to be confrontational. Why amend the Rukunegara?

God has not been defined in the Rukunegara and quite deliberately so because we have a plural society. As such it is quite meaningless.

Some people worship money, power or licenciousness which could be considered their 'Gods'. Their God some would argue is the Devil.

So get my point? Dont waste time arguing about whether we should amend the Rukunegara. It is harmless really and does not restrict the activity of Devil worshipers! smilies/wink.gif

God is only a word which is only a concept;it is abstract & invisible;it means different things to different people;we cant really force people into believing or stop people from believing;so its best to keep religion within our own mind or the four walls of the building!Morality is ingrained in each and every soul;precepts & commandments ar eencouraging for people who have lost their conscience;for example*Thou shall not kill* is debatable;my Christiann friends told me it is not to kill humans only;but in another religion it means not to kill any living thing!Any enlightenment from anyone?

This God idea is also a convenient tool for us to whack the corrupt politicians.

To BN politicians, if you believe in God and follow his teachings, then why are you corrupt? Everyone knows which BN ministers are corrupt to the hilt. Everyone knows that as long as the corrupt govt is in power, nothing is gonna change.

Since politics and religion is a lethal mix, let's use religion to whack those corrupt politicians. If they cry foul, let's whack harder. You can't have your cake & eat it because they use religion for political mileage, and then they use their power to enrich themselves!

Most humans perceive GOD to have the traits of humans too, such as anger, wrath, vengeance and revenge. Einstein once wrote, ".......I see the structuredness of the Universe that forms a basis for scientific foundation." What is this structuredness? We are on a quest to comprehend and understand this and this journey of discovery continues even after our demise. However in our small human minds, we need a GOD that we can associate with and possibly see. That s why the humanisation of GOD. Such as GOD has a house, sits on a high chair Etc etc. This GOD that I believe in is very different from the GODs of religions. This GOD I believe in is the Lord of the Universe, GOD of ALL mankind (An Naas) and does not have anger, revenge, wrath and vengeance as a trait. Perhaps in my next existence I will comprehend the concept fully, but in the meantime I will strive to be a decent human being. Oh by the way this GOD of the Universe do not need to be BODEK.

For the record I am agnostic, 8 out of 10 people I have met don't understand what it means without looking it up let alone grasp the concept.

I am of the opinion that whatever religion one professes or whether one talks till their face turns blue about the constitution , rukunegara, penal code etc, I judge a person by their actions, and if their words don't match their actions- they have no moral standing to talk to others about their lip service values.

I have met atheists and agnostics who actually live the values they espouse, I have also found those who talk glibly about their religious beliefs to be hypocrites who do not practice what they preach.

RPK put it very succinctly when he talked about the importance of substance and not form.

Since we are on the topic of Rukun negara lets take a look at how much the BN particularly UMNO upholds
the tenets or " 5 National Principles"

BELIEF IN GOD
------------------------
Corruptly enriching themselves by plundering the nation, lying to its own citizens, incarcerating political opponents,
playing up racist and religious rhetoric for political gains.

LOYALTY TO KING AND COUNTRY
---------------------------------------------------------
Amending the constitution to usurp the powers of the monarchy, defying the Kings selection of MB's and in the case
of Terengganu-UMNO members calling the sultan "natang" (short for binatang or animal) ignoring the Kings call
recently not to exploit racial issues.

THE SUPREMACY OF THE CONSTITUTION
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Amending the constitution willy nilly some 600 times to suit their whims and fancies,
subverting the intent and spirit of the federal constitution.

THE RULE OF LAW
----------------------------------
Selective prosecution and fabricating evidence, not taking action against UMNO linked cronies
More interested in breaking up peaceful candlelight vigils than taking decisive action against mat rempits,
Altantuya, Altantuya, Altantuya - need I elaborate ?

I am so frustrated I can write about this alone 8 pages long.

COURTESY AND MORALITY
--------------------------------------------
A rather superfluous clause this one, but when the names Hamidah Osman, Tajudin Rahman,Khir Toyo,
Jamaluddin Jarjis, Ali rustam , Muhammad x 2, Bung Mokhtar, Rahim tambi chik,
From making ultra racist remarks, making seditious statements and other misdeeds, so-is courtesy
and morality (kesopanan dan kesusilaan) even remotely practiced ?

When those entrusted to uphold the sanctity of the laws of the land instead subvert it with wanton impunity, ordinary men and women begin to lose faith in the law,
criminals are emboldened to commit crimes as the authorities have lost the moral high ground.

Has anyone seen god? Did god come to any one of your offices or place of worship and said you must do this and you must do that? Did god sign a contract with anyone of you? The answer is obviously NO! It is a belief deep down within us. It is personal. Today religion is used by some irresponsible people to rule our lives and the way we live. To Hell with these bastards. I believe in god. I believe that god always tells us to do good, be honest and upright. I believe.

I strongly believe in God, one God, just one God with different names. What sucks me is religions which claim that only their god is the truth and other faiths are all lies. As long as a person is human enough to run his/her life without harming others, even if that person is an atheist, to me it is fine. When a person becomes religious extremist, he will make other peoples' life miserable.

When politicians used the name God it is for different reason from the clergymen. UMNO use the word God to exclude the free thinking individual and prescribe more lethal drugs to believers to ensure compliance and infuse sense of guilt to those not supporting the UMNO God. UMNO has no respect to the God they preached. UMNO continue to plunder the raayats' money in brought daylight and push God forward so they can hide behind the imaginary God.

Having the word God in the Constitution privides good cover for the plunderers of the nation wealth.

Religion is a personal thing. What one believe or do not believe is ones prerogative and no amount of laws, constitutions or moral policing can change that. Instead of wasting time and man power forcing ones moral standard on others, it is far better to concentrate ones effort on the rapists, thieves and murderers. Or maybe, that is too dangerous for our police.
