Another parliamentary by-election has been forced upon Barisan Nasional, at a time when the ruling coalition may not be ready to face voters

Baradan  Kuppusamy, The Star

BY-ELECTIONS are usually the forte of the ruling Barisan Nasional government, what with its limitless resources and formidable machinery, but after the March 8 thrashing, it is fighting shy of by-elections.

Ground conditions are still raw for Barisan, and other issues compound the problems for the coalition.

The unending bickering between Barisan component parties, the ugly passions sparked by the hotly contested Umno elections and dissatisfaction by the abrupt manner of Prime Minister Abdullah Badawi’s retirement have dented Barisan’s ability to battle the Opposition.

But fate keeps shoving by-elections Barisan’s way and the latest is Kuala Terengganu, following the death of incumbent and Deputy Education Minister Datuk Razali Ismail on Nov 28.

The first by-election of the season, in Permatang Pauh, was forced on Barisan after incumbent Datin Seri Dr Wan Azizah Ismail resigned in favour of her husband and PKR supremo Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

Anwar’s victory and triumphant entry into parliament was a major psychological blow to Barisan.

Another potential by-election was averted when Barisan withdrew its election petition for the Bandar Baru-Kulim constituency that was won by PKR’s Zulkifly Noordin.

In September, an election court declared the election for the Pensiangan parliamentary seat in Sabah void and a by-election is delayed only because incumbent Tan Sri Joseph Kurup has appealed the decision in the Federal Court.

There is no escape but face the Kuala Terengganu by-election, which is wholly unexpected and could not have come at a worst possible time for Umno and Barisan.

“Although overall, it is a contest between Barisan and Pakatan, at the ground level the fight is between PAS and Umno,” said Zulkifly Sulong, former editor of PAS organ Harakah.

“It is a major battle and will have a significant impact on the psyche of the people and national politics,” he said, declining to go into specifics.

Razali won the seat by 1,933 votes against PAS stalwart Dr Syed Azman Syed Nawawi, now the Batu Buruk assemblyman, in the 2004 general election but his majority was slashed to 628 in the March 8 contest.

It is a slim majority and a lot now depends also on the 11% Chinese voters in the 80,000-odd electorate who have traditionally backed the MCA, which controls the Bandar state seat, one of four in the Kuala Terengganu constituency.

Despite a huge effort and a campaign personally led by PAS president Ustaz Hadi Awang, PAS failed to win back Terengganu in 2004 and this year.

It ruled Terengganu for one term in 1999 and in that time, it made headlines for enacting hudud laws.

The failure, despite PAS’ success across the country, was a blot on Hadi and the up-coming by-election is seen by his supporters as a chance to redeem himself and show his mettle.

On the Umno side, the ball is in the court of Prime Minister-designate Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.

As the new leader of Umno and Barisan, it is on his shoulders to put together a winning strategy and try to retain the seat.

Success, no matter how thin the winning majority, would be a boost as he walks into the Umno general assembly in March next year.

A defeat would not be a total disaster either.

This is because victory or defeat will not change the power equation in parliament but the psychological impact on party supporters would be enormous on either side.

With controversies raging over ketuanan Melayu, the continuance of NEP policies and Islam, the outcome in Kuala Terengganu would also indicate how rural Malay voters stand on such issues.

PAS vice president Mohamad Sabu, who stood against Razali, is likely to be fielded again although there is some talk that this might not be the case.

Mohamad Sabu is not only popular in the party but also a sought-after speaker at DAP and PKR events, and even at non-governmental organisation. He is widely acknowledged as an all-season performer.

But he is not a local boy, which veterans say is a handicap because voters always look more favourably on a local boy.

Abdullah said Barisan Nasional was confident of a victory, provided it and Umno settled differences and offered a united front to voters.

However, that’s the kind of unity Barisan has been unable to show since the March 8 losses at the hands of a resurgent Pakatan Rakyat opposition.

“We are our own worst enemy,” said a Barisan component party leader.

“We are still in denial, we have not got our act together and now we have to face the voters again.”

With each and every by-election, UMNO loses more and more ground. Soon, Barisan Nasional will be the Oppostion Party, and PR, the Ruling one.

Bye-Bye UMNO....

Dear all human beings and malaysians, Please remember, this Kuala Trengganu Parliment by-election is one of the most important by-election of all time, this is the turning point, the 2nd step after Pematang Pauh Election, to show the world, to show the Malaysian, Yes, We Can. We can change to have a good government, a new beginning, of Pakatan Rakyat, to stop the BN/Umno Cronies, Corruption, Arrogant, Greedy government, that only benefit their cronies and the very rich few. We must turn to new page, Yes, We Can.
The KT is a rural area, they read newspaper which is MainStreamMedia, hence, last election, Pakatan Lost, we the rakyat, must go to inform all the voters all the evil and corruption and cronies to ask them to give the Pakatan Rakyat to form the next government, it is still a long way, but we need the courage of the KT voters, to tell the government, Yes, We Can.
Enough is enough, the BN/Umno is still in denial, they only interested in enrich their pocket, the petrol price should be at rm$1.52, but it is at $1.90. The Tenaga national electricity tariff price go up when petrol price go up, now petrol price go down, govenmen never reduce the electricity rate. The price of everything like Toll, is to enrich the few Umno/BN cronies, it is not good for the Malaysian rakyat, not good for our competitiveness. The world is in recession, we should have a new government to prevent further corrupt, greedy, Arrogant in govermen.
We must change, Yes, We Can. Tell our KT voters, take the lead, lead the Malaysia to a new beginning, new frontier, then, we Malaysian, under Pakatan Rakyat, will truly enjoy, Diversity is Strength, where there is no racial and racist politic. We must unite together for a better Malaysia, under Pakatn Rakyat, if they do not perform, we will vote them down, and we the voters are the decision maker. Not the govermen, tell us what to do, we tell the govermen what to do. Yes We can.
we want the new beginning, zero corruption, that will take us to better live, everyone, dont pay so expensive petrol, suffer for the greedy govenmen. We must change, to a new competitive and prosperous Malaysia, with all the resouces, we must be much, much better, i.e. get rid of corruption, greedy govenment.
We will have Pakatan win the KT by election, then we will have the Sarawak government go to Pakatan Rakyat, we rakyat must work hard to change, we all must united, for a better tomorrow, better malaysia. we love malaysia, we change malaysia.

This will be another achievement for our record books : dirtiest campaign ever.

BN will lose, based on the razor thin majority it had, but with the help of phantom voters and vote rigging, the result may be different.

SO, please do your part and vote and make it count. Lets hand them UMNOputras a thrashing in the Malay heartland.

Media Dept should publish some newsletters to inform the KT Rakyat about all the scandals of the government and cases which invlove billions of RM. That their interest are not protected, that they are being USED. What has happened to the use of Perdana, then to Mercedes, the various projects that has cost billions to develop. Weekly newsletter to update them of the Eurocopter, Scorpion, Tourism scandals, APs for cars, food for oil etc etc. For them to read and discuss in coffee shops daily.....

It is too late for UMNO/BN to do any soul-searching, let alone regroup their regimes'troups to form a stronger fort for the coming election.

Since last March 8th, till now, they have wasted 9 months scrambling over a piece of pie. The UMNO regime should have focus on a better stretegy to counter the stronger opposition, and to find out where their flaws are..

Instead, the goons are too preoccupied in buying votes, to bicker over trivial issues, to put the innocence in jail, to stir up fatwa's yoga issue...etc...

The UMNO goons are definitely heading for A BIG FALL !!!!

I have a suggestion for PR Campaign:

Ask all those in Terengganu this series of questions:
"In the past 51 years, have any one of you received one cent of the Peruntukan Melayu?
Do you know where it went to? Did you visit your Ministers' Open House During Raya?
Did you observe his Interior Decoration? Did you realize that his interior decoration is more than sufficient to send your entire village for overseas education? Do you know how much more the UMNO Minister has in the Bank? Would you like to know? Did you also realize that these Ministers are not even "Malayu"? "

Err... I'm a little confused. How would "the outcome in Kuala Terengganu also indicate how rural Malay voters stand on such issues"? would this not be the urban vote? I mean, this is Kuala Terengganu, the capital of Terengganu?

Or is T'ganu so undeveloped that even its capital is made of rural folk?

And suddenly, the media will potray UMNO/ BN as the saviour of the KT people. Everybody seemed to point that UMNO is the best etc. and the victory is assured. On voting day, it will turn another way that PAS wins. Malaysian media, please be ethical.
