James Chin , MALAYSIAN INSIDER

In the bad old days when I conducted seminars, I used this opening line: “Don’t believe what you read about Malaysia. There is complete freedom of speech in Malaysia. There is only no freedom after the speech.”  I’d get a few laughs here and there.

I know, I know, this line has been overused by Kit in the august House.  After what happened to some bloggers (you know, being sued all) and RPK sent to UK (Universiti Kamunting) you really have to wonder what it is you can and cannot say.

My professional 2 sen is that you can say what you want but be ready to be sued, or be given a full scholarship to UK. (This scholarship covers all costs including tuition, full board, transport allowance from anywhere in Malaysia to Ulu Kamunting and back.)

You see, the problem is Malaysians cannot really talk to each other. Everything that is non-sensitive to one community is ACTUALLY very sensitive to another. There is no common area for any real discussions on religion or politics or even mundane issues such as the price of cars, scrap metal business, etc.

When you complain about the price of cars in this country, some people are unhappy because you are deemed to be unpatriotic for not supporting the national car project.

After all, in the name of patriotism, who does not want to pay TWICE the world price for a product that is “Kampung First Class” – you know, cheap plastics, funny noises after 10,000km, constant problems with the auto-gearbox, etc. (For more information, please check with the mechanics looking after the exco cars in Selangor, Perak and Terengganu.)

On the scrap metal business, no logical or rational discussions please!  You are raising a “sensitive”  issue since the scrap metal issue is really an ethnic issue given that one race dominates the trade (Did I just say something sensitive?) With a smart lawyer, you can probably use the Sedition Act on this one.

In other words, you name it, it is bound to be sensitive. You really have to wonder how people handle stress here since opening your mouth may lead to all sorts of trouble!

Is this the reason why obesity is fast becoming a problem here? Since you cannot talk, might as well eat.

Truth be told, Malaysians have not learnt the simple lesson in life: you can agree to disagree. Malaysians want to “win” the argument – any argument. Since a “win” means someone has to “lose” the best solution is to fly the “sensitive” issue flag.

If you think you cannot win the argument, just shout “you cannot say that – its sensitive!”

The obsession with “sensitive issues” has led to some funny results. Mainstream newspapers are now losing their readership because they don’t cover the real news – the real news is too sensitive to be printed. So you increase the entertainment news and the classifieds.

Local–made movies and teledramas are pathetic because their storylines cannot deal with any sensitive issues. You cannot be creative because everything around you is sensitive.

So what do you do? Most people bare their souls by writing anonymous postings on the internet. There are thousands of anonymous Malaysian blogs that complain about everything around them.

Yet the writers refused to identify themselves. You can’t blame them, though. After all, from kindergarten onwards, every time they open their mouths, their teacher would say, “You can’t say that! It’s a sensitive issue!”

P.S. I have to take back everything I said because I have been told it’s too sensitive to discuss UK, national cars, scrap metal business, obesity, etc. PLEASE IGNORE WHAT YOU HAVE READ. I TAKE BACK EVERYTHING!

No, James Chin, you don't have to take back what you have just said. I do enjoy very much reading your article. You bare the truth about the state of mind most malaysians have: they are too afraid to be reprimanded for speaking their mind!!

Raja petra is one of rare species of human races. He is not afraid to speak up and allow the reader to get to the bottom of the whole truth. Yes, I do agree, he pays a big price to uphold his principle, but I am sure he feels it is worth every single minute he spent behind bars when he helps to educate many of us in many fields, let it be islam religion, the concept of human mind, and the many weird happenings that go on behind UMNO/BN curtains....

It would take another 2 or three centuries before the people of Malaysia understand the concept of BEING YOURSELF!! to live a meaningful and productive life ...

Fear is the word that rules everything here in the Malaysian injunctions in the last 20 years-- its getting worse by the day with the face of power and a tainted judiciary closing ranks to usurp anything that drops on on its feet.

SAC1 Dato’ Zamri, who interrogated RPK during his detention speaks volumes on this thinking . A future Law enforcement Officer thinking that we are all stupid --- so let it be so ?? --- as all economic activity for the Nation on auto mode is on the flow from the Petronas wells . No intelligent minds are needed according to his argument .

Malaysia can be put into a class as when cowboys were running around in countries like in the 50 's in Latin America. The face of those Nations today is the poverty and the emigration of all its intellectual minds .
Malaysia is already on its way for that !! Unless Englande, and lots of learning centers in varied subjects than religion from womb to grave, is taught for the removal of bigots at each level of society is examined. Lots of homework left undone fed to the evil within ! its all in the hands of the teachers , fathers and mothers in this country to make that change for the generations to come!
Time is running out !!

apa rakyat lain ingin menyuarakan dan selagi merupakan satu hasutan kepada umno ..masuk ISA ..

Perceptions & dogma of a dominant force.

What is truth to one individual may not be in tandem with someone else, so here lies the beginning of differing opinions and then ideology. Many wars have been fought because of differing ideologies.

So why not learn to accept the differing concepts be it religion or even practices of any race/religion?

If we look at the spiritual aspect of humanity our arguments and differences will never even surface. Unity comes with trust and belief our upbringing and education has taken us on a conflicting path filled with values that are questionable.

Think and analyse what is causing us to get worked up on any given issue!!!!

Nice one, James. You're quite right about our hypersensitivity.

Of course having a protectionist government (protectionist for self-serving purposes, obviously) is the cause of this hypersensitivty.

I tell you what though, having an ideology or religion under a protectionist umbrelle is just pointless. To me, real faith comes from constant and rigorous intellectual testing.

There is a way to neutralize the sensitive issue but now many people of each group race willing to compromise to each other ?
Have a look at all religious books, they are all teaching about how to love and what not to do and it is almost all the same but in different languages to accomodate for each race reading.
All religion teaches how to be compassion and what is bad to do for another human being and they never teaches how to hate other religion and it is only the people that make up all those hate to other religion is to gain something.

Religion is always the best thing in this world to provoke hatred cos everyone uses it to gain for themselves.
Those books never teaches you how to fight, hate, and provoke but to love and how to be compassion .
It is sad to see people uses it to fight for their own gain.
