(The Star) - PERLIS mufti Dr Asri Zainal Abidin penned his last article for Mingguan Malaysia before his resignation took effect yesterday.
In the article, he described the prejudice and tribulations he had faced from certain quarters during his two-year tenure in the state. Explaining that it was easier to “move mountains and hills” than to change the minds of these people, Dr Asri claimed he had been discriminated against, to the extent that he was not even appointed by the Islamic Development Department to any fatwa panel. He added that he was once “tried” by the National Fatwa Council for his views expressed during an RTM interview. “All the other state muftis are appointed. In fact, some of my peers in the other states stopped me from giving any ceramah in their states. “Selangor, for instance, allows all muftis to give ceramah, except me. “One even said in his ceramah that I had not worn a songkok when I was in New Zealand and I was late for the bus. “That was true but I am sure there is no need to include this in his speech” he said, adding there was even talk that he had punched an imam in Perlis and that he had the support of the United States. Dr Asri, who had tried to tender his resignation earlier this year, had a run-in with Jakim recently after he said that the department should be more flexible on its fatwa against Muslims practising systematic yoga. Dr Asri will leave for Britain today on sabbatical leave to continue his research on comparing the various interpretations of hadiths.

For what’s worth, Dr. Asri, have faith that good will triumph over evil; ok!
May Allah be with you in your quest for the truth.
