Perlis Mufti: Easier to move mountains PDF Print

(The Star) - PERLIS mufti Dr Asri Zainal Abidin penned his last article for Mingguan Malaysia before his resignation took effect yesterday.

In the article, he described the prejudice and tribulations he had faced from certain quarters during his two-year tenure in the state.

Explaining that it was easier to “move mountains and hills” than to change the minds of these people, Dr Asri claimed he had been discriminated against, to the extent that he was not even appointed by the Islamic Development Department to any fatwa panel.

He added that he was once “tried” by the National Fatwa Council for his views expressed during an RTM interview.

“All the other state muftis are appointed. In fact, some of my peers in the other states stopped me from giving any ceramah in their states.

“Selangor, for instance, allows all muftis to give ceramah, except me.

“One even said in his ceramah that I had not worn a songkok when I was in New Zealand and I was late for the bus.

“That was true but I am sure there is no need to include this in his speech” he said, adding there was even talk that he had punched an imam in Perlis and that he had the support of the United States.

Dr Asri, who had tried to tender his resignation earlier this year, had a run-in with Jakim recently after he said that the department should be more flexible on its fatwa against Muslims practising systematic yoga.

Dr Asri will leave for Britain today on sabbatical leave to continue his research on comparing the various interpretations of hadiths.

Does wearing a ‘sonkok’ a sign of a holy man? No wonder I have noticed so many strange looking people, masquerading as a Malay, wearing a ‘songkok’ on TV.

For what’s worth, Dr. Asri, have faith that good will triumph over evil; ok!
May Allah be with you in your quest for the truth.

Only the brave and confident ones like former Perlis mufti Dr Asri dare say what he had said. The UMNO-Malay-Muslim rut is there for all to see and yet there is so much denial from them. The truth is many are still refusing to change and move with the times and prefer to remain where they are. Right! Mountains are easier to move than ugly non-progressive fixed mindsets. It's really unfortunate for the country.

They are just taking revenge on him, hw was one of the two Ulama ( the other is Tok Guru Nik Aziz Nik Mat) who gave declarations that they found nothing insulting to Islam in RPK's articles.

I had earlier infered in my article that possibly politicians had infiltrated the fatwa council and are using it for their political ends.

but many still miss the point, even though MT admin highlited the salient points in bold-

I reiterate , it is not about questioning fatwa's, it is everything about questioning the abuse of the fatwa council by politicians.

Najib has declared that he will wrest back BN's 2/3rd majority, if the pakatan muslim & non muslim grassroots do not see this and bicker amongst themselves, BN may succeed......

Quote"4) The ruling government who has the fatwa council under its payroll, twisting their arms to issue such fatwas to scare non-Muslim voters into abandoning opposition Islamic party PAS, I cannot help but notice the escalation since PAS extended the olive branch by formally ratifying its non-Muslim wing, it seems that they are killing 2 birds with one stone by trying to show that they are more Islamic than PAS at the same time trying to erode PAS non-Muslim support.
I for one see this whole episode as possibly politically motivated with far reaching ramifications."

A non-Muslim perspective on controversial fatwa's

Muslims should pay attention to what Dr. Asri is saying, that it is easier to move mountains than the minds of muslims. Could this be the problem that bedevils malays?

My Swahili friends in Malaysia taught me a good Kiswahili proverb that says: “Kilembe cheupe si kumcha Mwenyezi” (Wearing white turbans is not a sign of God’s fear.

When reason is dropped in favour of religion and emotions, the result is never rational or right.

Moving a mountain is only possible with science and technology, both of which are borne of reason. One cannot even move even a single grain of sand using just religion.

All that statement does is highlight the effectiveness of religious indoctrination and the ineffectiveness of the indoctrinated to reason for themselves

Dragonheart,

Really? Ok, so I am a stupid & ignorant Muslim! Now I know that one have to be properly attired at all times. And Dr Asri should have kept his songkok pinned to his head!

So you profess to be a knowledgeable Muslim; yah? Well, good for you, but it must really gets to you reading all the constructive criticism of our faith; doesn’t it?
You telling me not to comment about Islam?
Well, I have this to say: “Fuk you, bro! I shall comment on what I want and when I want and there is nothing you and your other 25 hired bloggers can do about that; ok?”

Salaam!

Why go to britain to do research on Islam???????.,.Pot calling Kettle black..,.,

Shan,
Sometimes you need to go to the place where minority people appreciates more their religion instead of where majority are corrupted. Britain provide you more info about Islam compared to tainted information in Malaysia!

Rainbowseahorse - carry on and state your mind, bro!

Religion is NO ones domain and anyone who feels others are not capable enough nor knowledgeable enough to comment is leaving in a nutshell.
It takes a wise person to clarify doubts , no doubt how trivial or absurd it may seem - if not one should just refrain from telling others not to do so.

Dragon Heart or Dragon Poo, Rainbow SeaHorse or Rainbow SeaUrchin, Carribean King or Carribean Tranny,

The whole country is turning upside down and you jokers are still bloody arguing about Songkok and a pre historic medieval religion!
You should be concentrating on : "How to change the whole system and what needs to be done in order to achieve that CHANGE!!" .
That way, your future generations do not need to waste their precious time arguing about stupid issues like you jokers are doing now!!
You guys just love to read your own comments and have a few seconds of feel good rush, have an argument here and there, then wait for the next new article to comment on!
The question is, is that all you guys can do, to contribute to a new future of Malaysia??

It is not a wonder why the ruling politicians are treating Malaysians this way! NOW, STOP ALL THIS STUPID MALAYSIAN NONSENSE if you want to be respected by others!!

THERE ARE BETTER THINGS TO DISCUSS THAN A BLOODY SONGKOK!

Dear Hirakey,

Please read carefully again my posting, before you jump, I did not once mention anything remotely about a songkok or trivial matters.
If you have the time please read my thoughts and possible solutions in the link I have provided.

Before you talk to others about respect, you yourself should refrain from namecalling.

Learning to articulate yourself well will stand you in good stead.

and another one (mufti) bites the dust for refusing to be led by the nose.. how interesting that one can only truly learn the religion in a neutral country. isn't it strange that Britain provides a better environment for "Islamic research"??

AO Musa, I think India is the best place to research on Islam or any religion out of the Middle East.
In India, Islam is interelated to hinduism,in a sense where prayers are performed at the suraus and then proceeding to the hindu deity's temple.,There are Surau, mosque when the prayers are conducted by hindus and christians.
The muslim who went to britain, had a reason and that was for survival and only a congregation can protect them and thus the Muslim in Britain are no different from those of Malaysia,,.,.,Survival and safeguarding their rice bowl. The Bosnian we never pious, untill they we torture by the Croates ,.,.as such they started they Islamisation when they we at the verge of extinction and this cause the muslim nations to protest on the atrocities against the Bosnians.
India, there is no reasons for congregation for safety. The comunication is between you and god and that's what is DEVINE.,.So my reason for saying POT call Kettle Black still stand and to all those who disagreed to me,check your facts and my reasons first before shooting your votes.,.YOU HURT MY FEELINGS smilies/sad.gif smilies/cry.gif smilies/tongue.gif BY THE WAY DID YOU KNOW JESUS CHRIST WAS IN INDIA ,TOO?,.,.,.

Dear Dragon heart and all the muslims out there, can you please try to explain to me, a non muslim or as a matter of fact, non religious man some matters I found very confusing. Please bear in mind that I do believe in GOD but I just believe that God made man and man made religions for their own ends. Sorry for the necessary digression in case I will be misinterpreted as a non God fearing athiest. The things I find confusing about muslims in general is that they on one hand refuse to acknowledge the goodness of other religions and that Islam is "Uber Alles" and on the other hand eschews and enjoys the freedom of societies that they often condem. Take for example that when Khomani of Iran was persecuted in Iran he fled to Paris which generously gave him protection against the Shah. Muslims enjoy modern inventions like simple things such as airconditioners, blogging on the internet etc which are all inventions of progressive open minded societies that they condemned, by what, yes, ironically in the internet. Islam socieities used to be the leaders of science and technology, excell in astronomy and mathematics. What happened? Narrow parochialism takes over. Instead of learning what is good from others, acknowledge what is good in other societies and religions, muslims became self centred. One cannot be a good doctor, biologists etc if one cannot even, by religious decree, draw a human face. When Muhammed decree no worhipping of idols I am sure he did not meant even biological studies of human forms are not allowed. If muslims really is against all that is from "Kafir" or "Haram" societies, muslims might as well go back and live in an empty desert. If any muslims really think that other religions are of no use, just try to switch off your airconditioners and computer. They are developed by people following an inferiour God or Gods or what not. God in his/her wisdom, wanted diversity - A rainbow is alot more pretty than a black and white world. If God of Islam wanted everyone to be muslims and, if the muslims believe that God of Islam is above all, he could have waved his hand and everyone will have converted. Since he did not or could not, why harp so much on the supremacy of one religion? Why dont we follow God's will that he wanted diversity? May the force be with you!

Hakuan, Cruzeiro,

Thanks for the comment…and yes, I’ll keep on trucking in this blog! smilies/grin.gif

Hirakey, apology accepted though there is no need to do that as you were simply voicing out your mind. But it’s nice of you to do that though!

In blogger sphere, posting one’s view is what it’s all about. We are no politicians and so we might not be that tactful; right? Someone is bound to disagree and get all worked up with some comments & views that differ widely from their own. As such, there is bound to be conflict and disagreement. It would indeed be really boring if all bloggers agree with each other all the time; right? Our common goal here is to support the alternative government and to give our 2 sens worth which might be of use to them.

Cheers! And may God guide us in in our daily lives.
