(The Star) SHAH ALAM: Two opposition parties have been courting former de facto Law Minister Datuk Zaid Ibrahim.

According to sources, both DAP and PKR have approached the politician to join their respective parties.

Zaid helped fuel the rumours by attending the DAP victory dinner in Penang and the opening of the PKR congress in Shah Alam yesterday.

When contacted, he said: “I appreciate both their helping hands to resuscitate my political life but I want to see if I can do something useful for young people.”

“The foundation for young people has been registered and will start work soon. I may go back to politics in a few years. That’s as clear as I can say,” he added.

Earlier at the congress, Zaid who was spotted sitting next to SAPP president Datuk Yong Teck Lee said: “Yes, yes I am still in Umno. I have not been sacked yet.”

Zaid, who recently received a show cause letter from Umno, said he was still waiting for their response.

On whether it was right for him to be present at a congress openly slamming Umno, Zaid replied it was normal in politics.

“The Opposition is not an enemy. They are just people with different views so I don’t regard them as enemies. They ‘bantai’ (slam) Umno and Umno slams them. It’s part of the game,” he said.

On whether he had any fear that Umno would be forced to take action against him for showing up at the opening of PKR congress with Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim as the keynote speaker, he said: “I think I don’t have that much fear. I fear more for my health. I am not well.”

Others at the opening included DAP’s Lim Kit Siang, Karpal Singh, Teresa Kok and Dr Chen Man Hin.

The delegation from PAS included Datuk Husam Musa, Datuk Nizar Jamaluddin and Datuk Kamaruddin Jaafar.

SAPP recently left Barisan Nasional but it has not joined Pakatan Rakyat.

With such intelligence, fairness, and commitment, no wonder he is being courted by the opposition. Serves UMNO right for not appreciating a gem like him!

Malaysia should have more fair minded Malays in the likes Datuk Zaid Ibrahim too.

And not like those ' retarded ' ones in UMMNO who insist that others owe them a living or salutation ( middle finger, if mandatory ).

Politically, if and when he joins either party, he would be a force to be reckoned with. He could win an election in any constituency he chooses. Strategically though, I think he would do more good if he joins DAP. This is to reinforce the party image of being a more multi-racial party rather than a Chinese party as it has been perceived. PKR has too many Malay giants already and Zaid could find himself sidelined when egos clashed. Whereas in DAP, he will be the towering Malay and could even be a future PM or DPM. And it will encourage more Malays to join DAP. To put it mildly, DAP needs him more than he needs DAP.

Being young, Zaid should now strategize himself to be the next PM of Malaysia.

I concur with Loosecanon but disagree with the notion that DAP needs him more than he needs DAP.

It really depends what Zaid stands for. Zaid was supportive of the Bar Council forum discussing the impact on non-muslim families when a spouse converts to Islam. He felt it was fundamental we take the feelings of non-Muslims into account. Anwar was to put it plainly duplicitous. He gave wishy-washy answers, but he was 'confident' that Zulkifli Noordin, the PKR MP who terrorised the meeting and brought it to an early end would not defect to UMNO!

Zaid to my mind is a true believer. His does not wear Islam on his sleeve but it is clear his life is guided deeply held moral values. His contribution to charity is legendary.

He has a deep intellect and has a secular mindset which is so vital for a plural society like ours. He has been consistent in his political views and has never been a poodle of anyone or betrayed anyone. He does not have 'a cloud' hanging over him.

If Zaid joins PKR he will have to play second fiddle to the 'Reformasi Icon' Anwar and this will be a potential source of conflict. Let us face it, they are as similar as chalk and cheese.

Anyway, why should a man on Zaid's calibre defer to Anwar? Anwar unfortunately finds it impossible not to play the Islamic demagogue and at the same time makes a pathetic attempt to play the universalist. His 'Ketuanan' mindset was clear for all of us to see during the PKR congress. The notion that Malays and Islam are going to be fair and 'protect' other races because they are 'anak kita' all sounds very nice but there was the dangerous subtext of 'Ketuanan' which riddled through his speech. Non-Muslims do not want 'protection' by anybody but want to be Equal under the Malaysian sun.

If Zahid joins DAP, he will have so many opportunities and choices. He has a better chance of being PM in DAP than in PKR unless the courts put Anwar away. If he runs for a state seat in Perak, he stands an excellent chance of being the next MB of Perak.

PM or MB Zaid? Not bad choices DAP is offering you. smilies/grin.gif

Zaid certain live up to his words... he has modern path of thinking unlike all of beruks within UMNO... there only suits their own agenda and not sincere in whatever they preach now and forever meaning to say they have double head snake in their roles!
