The spectre of job losses haunts Malaysia PDF Print

The global recession is already creeping up on us with the spectre of job losses looming. Already, we hear multinational corporations here slowing down production, asking workers to take annual leave and going for planned shutdowns. No bonus, no increments, etc…

That’s not surprising. US third quarter 2008 economic growth was already in negative territory: - 0.5 per cent (preliminary figure). Personal consumption in the States was down by 3.7 per cent - and that could worsen - while retail sales fell 15 per cent. Housing prices there are expected to slide further.  US unemployment could soar to 8.5-9.0 per cent by the end of 2009.

That’s grim reading, isn’t it? It would be foolish to think Malaysia can be spared, especially when traditionally, 20 per cent of Malaysia’s exports have gone to the United States - 12 per cent to the giant US electronic multinationals - while Europe is also sucked into the maelstrom.

Blog reader Drachen mocks the thinking in some circles:

Wait a minute, our future PM and DPM are discussing issues and problems seriously overseas. They will be back after sight seeing to solve our jobless problems. But how about 2 over million legal immigrant workers and much more illegals occupying job due to our citizen?

The economic downturn is serious and we are not even aware of the fog surrounding us! The rate of crime has dramatically increased ( just ask any police station on reports )and with the full-force of the downturn hitting us, we are definitely going to face more problems and we are sitting ducks.

Our government is not addressing the problem correctly and in lightning speed; so obvious in all the politicking in elections, fatwa here and fatwa there. The rich can't be bothered about any downturn, they have more than enough, all the fatwas in Malaysia can't hurt them. They can have a wine cellar built. They can have their own private yoga tutor who comes to their house nad no one is the wiser.

The rakyat, ordinary folks earning a living, trying to make ends meet between how much to spend for rising costs of food, utilities etc. won't bother about where to find wine or to yoga or exercise their biceps and triceps at Fitness centres. Look they are trying to figure out what they can buy to eat for RM5 a day out of their RM1200-RM1500 a month and to feed their family. All those who earn a household income of RM3000 have found their income level to be actually RM1800 today. Don't crap anymore ok. We can forget about WAWASAN 2020 as the current Federal government has put us way behind by a decade with policies.

Lets just keep our fingers crossed to see what Pakatan Rakyat will continue to do; I just feel the quantum leap has to be taken. We are already sitting ducks; maybe dead by next year.

Where got economic melt-down ! Look at the UMNO campaigning for party posts. Millions upon millions change hands. It is hot bull market with bidding going up and up with no shortage of takers.

We just pray hard, really hard, that during his last 4 month of premiership, Pak Lah will not extend the pension age of civil servants to 65 years old.

Recession what recession, the Ketuanan UMNO have loaded themselves with 7 000 000 000.00 ringgit and 5 000 000 000.00 ringgit now and then from the rakyat money. They are not going to starve but the poor rakyat. If Singapore need 2 years to recover Malaysia will be lucky to get out in 4, a factor of 2 due to all the smart brians in BN, ban yoga, ban alcohol, ban gathering, increase petrol cost, increase money politics, issue more APs, ban "ALLAH", ban anything you can think off.

We had boom before this bust. Even though the cause and effort this time is unprecedented, it's still a typical 10 year financial cycle. If one has been deligent and working hard during the boom years and saving adequately, do not worry unduly. In fact consider taking very long leaves to do what you have always wanted to do but can't because of work. Take a short course to enhance your career prospects, renovate your house now if you have saved for it, now at discount prices, travel to countries with weakened currencies, spend more time with your family, etc. The truth is, if everyone stops spending, the economy dies stat.

All good things will come to an end. Conversely, all bad things will also come to an end. After a good rest during bust, you will be recharged to work hard again at boom times.

THE DENIAL SYNDROME by the UMNO leaders and the cabinet ministers, day by day, is taking a turn towards the worst. They listen to nobody. They deny everything and ignore everything about the deteriorating economy. They fabricate all facts and datas, just to show that our economy is resilient to the world economic crisis. They don't even acknowledge that our country is facing economic crisis. It seems that so much time and resources are spent on the UMNO campaign, and nobody is looking after this country's economy.
