The Bar Council will continue to voice its views on issues happening in the country as this is in accordance with the law, its president, Datuk Ambiga Sreenavasan, said yesterday.

She said the Bar had the right to give its views because any statements made were only in relation to justice and the law.

"If people say we are entering into politics, then that means they do not understand what exactly we do," she told reporters after launching the Bar Council's Legal Aid Website and Legal Aid Room at the Court Complex in Jalan Duta here.

Ambiga was commenting on a statement by Malaysian Muslim Lawyers Association president Tan Sri Abu Zahar Ujang that the Bar should opt to dissolve itself if it wanted to dabble in politics.

Abu Zahar claimed that the council was now acting like an opposition party and was even questioning the bumiputra privileges.

"Statements made by the Bar are not political at all. The Bar Council's statements did not touch on politics but may have touched on some political events that happened," she said.

Saying that the Bar had never changed its principles, said that people could label the Bar whatever way they wanted but most importantly, statements made by the Bar were only in relation to justice and the rule of law.

On the legal aid website, Ambiga said the public could visit its website at http:/www.legalaidkl.org.

She also urged the government to help fund the Bar, a voluntary organisation, as it is currently handling too many legal aid cases.

Since 2007, the Bar had received about 18,000 cases, mostly criminal, for its lawyers to handle on a voluntary basis.

Ambiga said she suggested to Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Seri Mohamed Nazri Abdul Aziz last month the setting up of a foundation to help the Bar in this matter. (Bernama)

Talk, talk, talk, no use. Can the Bar council show ACTION instead. We want ACTION! You must show some dignity; Tan Sri Abu Zahar Ujang is asking you to opt to dissolve yourself if you continue to dabble in politics. To me, it seems like a slap in the face. They are dictating their terms to you.

Malaysian Muslim Lawyers Association president Tan Sri Abu Zahar Ujang ....maybe he wants to enter politics and using this as his stepping stone. Might be another "stooge" who wants milage and not the truth.

Anyway - should he not be saying this to the "other" court lawyers as he represents them only.

Good on you Bar Council, keep raising the issues that afflict the common man.Thats what a law body is suppose to do among others esp a peak law body like the Bar Council. But the law of the land is the reflection of the people's mental progress and in this regard Umno is extremely backward as it is still in feudal times (thanks to Mahathir) and will be unable to accept (owing to its feudal mental constraints) any other opinion, leave alone ground breaking opinions. What other party in the world postpones/prevents its own elections from taking place in this 21at century - other than Umno of course. If thats not feudal, what is it?

It would be a real shame if the Bar Council is to keep mum on national issues after what MMLA president Abu Zahar said. There is no need to defend the Council. On the contrary, the Council should promptly take appropriate actions against that man who asked the Council be desolved! The Council should strike off his name from its roll for bringing disrepute and contempt upon the Council! The Council should not hestitate or be afraid to act on this wayward member.

It appears not only Zahar is ignorant on the function of the Bar Council, many pro-UMNO bloggers suggested that Ambiga be arrested under the ISA, we are a country where the literacy rate is purportedly 88%,where 35% of the population give their support to an imbicilic party that subverts the rule of law and another 27 % of the people spinelessly support its component party's. Alone with 79 seats UMNO cannot form a government, as they say it takes a village, if I had my way I would enforce a meritocracy where those with IQ levels approaching those of an imbecile be barred from voting, the whole nation does not deserve to suffer because of their stupidity.

I applaud the Bar Council's President Ambiga for her stand to defend the functions of the Bar Council. Abu Zahar, being a learned lawyer himself knows exactly what his role is. To uphold the rule of law and justice without fear or favour. Many lawyers in the Bar COuncil are now facing many obstacles in carrying out their roles with the interference from the Executive, tainted judiciary and the Administration.

Abu Zahar was an UMNO MP. No wonder he sounded like UMNO who don't seem to agree to difference of opinions. It's like UMNO knows best for you and you must obey kind of thing.

He is not in the world of reality, as the minority would now decide who would be the winner. I hope he realises this.

The statement by the President of The Malaysian Muslim Lawyers Association that the Bar Council should opt to dissolve itself is absurd If the Bar Council is barred from making comments on law and justice and events and incidents related to law, order and justice ,then what is the justification for the existence of the BODY like Malaysian MUslim lawyers Association ?? What worthwhile functions can be expected of them? Other than of course, asking every other responsible Councils/Associations to close shop.

Malaysian Muslim Lawyers Association.....hmmm..sounds like a racist organisation. The Bar can question and discuss issues affecting not only its members but also the population at large and matters pertaining to law that affects us all.
Ambiga, there are matters I will not agree with u and that is the magic of democracy that is to agree and disagree. I know as a matter of fact there are lawyers with political ambitions within the Bar and its working committees. Well lawyers can have political ambitions and so on, nothing wrong with that but when lawyers use certain platforms within the Bar for it then this may need some looking in to. I heard that an Inquiry is being conducted against the KL Legal Aid Centre.
I also know that the lawyers make a payment towards the Legal Aid Fund to run this Legal Aid Centres and the bulk of this contribution in the tune of RM500,000.00 went to KL Legal Aid Centre. Here the influence of a well known political party is very strong and members who question this are sidelined and the complaints fall on deaf ears and are usually hushed up and the complainants demonised.
Ambiga, remember what goes around comes around. The Bar has to clean up its own house first before it can be more effective as the last bastion to safeguard justice.
