Malaysia's prime minister said Wednesday Muslims should still take up yoga, reversing an outright ban that has drawn widespread protests amid concerns over growing Islamic fundamentalism in the multiracial nation.

Malaysia's National Fatwa Council, comprising Islamic scholars, told Muslims at the weekend to avoid yoga because it uses Hindu prayers that could erode Muslims' faith.

But the decision drew a sharp rebuke from many Muslims and even Malaysia's sultans, or hereditary rulers, who said that they should be consulted on any matters involving Islam.

Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi moved to contain the damage, telling the national news agency Bernama that Muslims could carry on doing yoga but minus the chanting.

"I wish to state that a physical regime with no elements of worship can continue, meaning, it is not banned. I believe that Muslims are not easily swayed into polytheism," he said.

Just before Abdullah spoke, the eldest son of the ruler of the central Negeri Sembilan state took the government to task over the yoya ruling.

"Islam is a progressive religion and the ulama (scholars) should be confident of the followers' faith rather than micro-managing their way of life," Tunku Naquiyuddin told a luncheon.

"If I go to a church or a Buddhist temple, is there any fear of me converting? ... Where do we draw the line?" the online version of the Star newspaper quoted him as saying.

The yoga fatwa ruling came hot on the heels of another edict against young Muslim women wearing trousers.

Fatwas or religious edicts are not legally binding, but they are highly influential in Malaysia, where Malay-Muslims form just over half of the country's 27 million people.

The fatwa council has said that by wearing trousers, girls risked becoming sexually active "tomboys." Gay sex is outlawed in Malaysia.

Malaysia's sizeable minorities include ethnic Chinese and Indians who practice either Christianity, Buddhism or Hinduism.

The Fatwa council is led by a group of Islamic Radicals ignorant of the wonderful Islamic Religion. It is the actions of these illiterate goons that bring a bad name for Islam which is the greatest religion of the world.

I would like to suggest the entire Fatwa Council members resign in shame or sacked for bringing a bad name for Islam.

Just read the Star on 23/11/2008. NFC's chairman statements as quoted by the paper is certainly confusing and contradicting here and there. Wonder if paper quote wrongly. Maybe they can blame the media! he! he!

End of the day, The Great Phak Lah saved the day for Yogis. Msians hv wasted a good 2 weeks over this issue when we cud hv tackled more pressing issues. Of cos we will still be facing such idiotic and petty issues in days to come cos we will not stop thinking of more petty issues to fight over.

I am sure if the Fatwa is issue on Mat Rempits you will get the approval of 99% of Msians rgdless of religion and race. Of cos such orders wont come out bcos Mat Rempits are crucial to the "gang of thieves" one day to be used for their own gains.

Jakarta Post to clerics: Don't play God - Believe in Yoga

(Nov. 26, 2008 Jakarta Post Editorial)

Once again the venerable members of the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) are engaged in things which need not be of concern. Instead of bringing serenity, they are squandering their time and attention on issues that serve only to unsettle a finely balanced society.

The argument: Yoga contains ascetic Hindu practices that could corrupt the faith of Muslim practitioners.

The logic: Absurd!

Fear of syncretism between yoga and Islam is preposterous because yoga itself is not a religion. Even if it were, the practice of any religion, or even apostasy for that matter, is exclusively within the private domain of each citizen.

If it were indeed true that the faith of Muslims who practice yoga was being eroded, then would it not also be logical to ban them from learning Balinese dance, watching wayang (shadow puppets) and admiring the greatness of the Borobudur temple?

Frenchman J. Dechanet wrote a book on Christian Yoga and Indian author Ashraf Nizami hailed the benefits of yoga when he penned The Yoga of Islam more than three decades ago.

In fact, many aspects of the physical act of Islamic prayer, known as sholat, are analogous to the stretching and meditation found in yoga.

Our clerics have historically been leaders of society in times of hardship. Their preferences over the past few years, however, have demoted such councils to a budding joke likely to be ignored by an increasingly critical society.

What a bunch of idiots. Such a sloppy damage control job. Once the royalty moved in, now they say you can do yoga as an exercise without the rituals. What rituals. Only Najib and wife do the rituals with the Hindu priest.

Doesn't everyone realise that JAKIM has become more chaotic since it came under the administration of Zahid ? That's the problem with people who uses religion for his own political mileage. Now who's more guilty, PAS or yourself, Zahid ???

Eventhough I strongly think that the Fatwah Council had wasted their time with nothing better to do and wasted our taxpayers' money for barking on petty issues, but I become more confused when this clown PakLah opens his mouth.
I can see cheers here and there in MT raining praises on Mr. Flip Flop when he's seemingly made the hero for voicing out for the Rakyat.
Question 1: Why had he NOT voiced out when this Fatwah on yoga has already been in the headlines for weeks?
Question 2: Who has the authoritative position on the Islamic issues? The Fatwah Council? The Rulers? The PM?
Question 3: If the Fatwah Council has the final say, why do they back down when the Rulers and PM voice out? Then who's responsible for the time, money and FACE wasted?
Question 4: If the decision lies with the Rulers, then who is to determine that all Rulers are religionly adequate? I personally know that most of the Royal families are more Western than the Westerners. So even for Islamic issues they overrule the Fatwah Council?
Question 5: If PM is the MAN, then does this mean besides running the country (not that he does though) our PM of Malaysia is also the decider in Islamic issues? This also means our PM is all-mighty? Then the 191 division heads must be Saints?
Question 6: If fatwahs are just guidelines, then why the heck the big fuss about it? If they are not, then to what extent are Muslims binded by them?

Malaysia Boleh! When we are struggling to fight the financial crisis...
