Do Have some humility for P. Patto's family. PDF Print
Sunday, 23 November 2008 18:25
The renaming  of Jalan Silibin to Jalan P.Patto had caused an unusually large uproar from the businesses and residents in this particular area.

Although it is natural  to have  opposition  to this plan to change the road name but it must be contained within the precinct of fair comment and good faith.

After reading the two news reports in The Star (18-11-08 and 19-11-08),  one cannot deny the fact that there is a smack of  insensitivity permeating into this whole affair of  renaming.

If one has scant respect for P. Patto and has an unstoppable urge to comment, please  do exercise some humility because P. Patto's wife and his two daughters are still around and most important of all, P. Patto is not here to defend his name.

Disappointingly some of the comments had apparently gone overboard. As it stand, these  have undeniably  inflicted injury upon  P. Patto's family as it degrades what they have cherished so much of him as  a  good husband, a good father and an upright politician.

For being fair in one's comments means that one should not utter comments like "Patto would not be unhappy even if a pub is named after him".   One cannot miss an intentional sprinkle of cruelty in this comment.

This comment  implies that P. Patto  had spent his life time centre around pubs and  wouldn't be unhappy if a pub  is named after him.

P. Patto  once told me that when he leaves this world only his  name remains.

True to the point, but I do not wish to speculate whether he approves or disapproves of  having a road sign named after him but I am very sure that he would have be offended that his name is being toss about in disrespect.

Please let him be respected as  a fine, honest and humble gentleman for in the name of justice he had fought without fear or favour and for this very same reason  a road  will be named after him.

When I spoke to P.Patto's wife over the phone a very short while ago, she was clearly upset by the whole episode and I could hear her sobbing and she said, "what did my husband done to deserve all this?"  "My daughters and I did not demand or ask that a road be name after my husband."  "Why all these?"

No, he does not deserve all these - let us have some decency.

Choo Sing Chye

(former P Patto Political Secretary)

I don't mind they name the road after P.Patto but I will protest aggressively if there is a toilet name after Antu Shit Hamid.

To the family of Mr P Patoo,

I read in the star that you have rejected the renaming the road after Patoo which is a wise decision. There are still many self centered and shallow minded people out there. I am sure many will be proud of Siblin whoever it was for whatever things done for this nation.

Patto's family did the right thing in rejecting the proposal . We have lots of bigotry with vested interests in the powers that be . Mr Patto never passed over in vain. His service to the Nation is open to all to see in our daily lives. God bless his soul and his family !!

Clearly shows many of us deserves to be continued to be screwed-up, simply because we fail to see and appreciate the good works of people like P.Patto who have 'fought the good fight' for a better Malaysia for all. Sadly we have fallen prey to the influence to highlight negative and demeaning comments. With such attitudes, one can imagine how much respect we have for our more simpler folks such as the maids, the road sweeper etc. who does simple daily tasks for our comfort and convenience!!! smilies/angry.gif

In general, long established road names should not be changed because road name bring historical nostagia about it, and the people have associated their childhood memories with it.

To honor Mr Pato by naming one of the roads after his name is not wrong, but it should not be done at the expense of an established name. Someone had mentioned why not the roads of an entire housing estate be named after him, for example Jalan Pato 1,2,3 and so on. this is a good idea.

I find it most disturbing to re-name roads, until now I still call certain roads in K.L. by their old names for example Jalan Cambell, Jalan Lornie etc..

I will definitely get upset when I have to change my MyCard, Business Card, Letter Heads when the Road name where I do business and reside is changed.

I was just wondering how many idiots esp BN idiots would shake their heads in agreement if the road was named after Samy Velly or Mahathir Mohamed. In Malaysia there is room for thieves to flourish but no place for upright people who fought the thieves
