There is little excuse except for incompetence for this fiasco. Penangites are very protective of George Town. This may be the backlash that DAP doesn’t need in Penang.

Wonder how the Chinese press are playing the issue? Splash it all over the frontpages for a week at least….

Last minute approvals? SO DODGY!!! Incompetence or greed?  You can’t help but wonder….Btw, it was the GERAKAN govt who submitted the plans to UNESCO and got it approved.

These developers will also lose out if George Town loses its UNESCO world heritage site status. This is what attracts many foreigners to come to Malaysia. Can't there be a compromise to ensure that their developments do not breach the conditions? Or is it a lost cause trying to reason with them?

*sigh*

Please lar - stop putting the blame on DAP - it was Gerakan government that approved the high rise buildings.

If Penangites want to protect the heritage status, they better be prepared to risk legal suits over development approvals. The DAP government can certainly negotiate that, but it's going to take time - and it may not work out well - especially if some of these developers are aligned to BN and is prepared to sabotage the Penang government.

Make Koh Tsu Koon and his cronies pay for Penang's losses. Find out how much they made to approve these projects. These Gerakan fkrs really have no souls.

"Nothing can be achieved if you do not have strategic plans and if things are done on a piece meal basis"

Don't the people of malaysia feel that the whole damn country is run on a piece meal basis? From education to economy, most of the time the warlords in the government are handling them on a fire fighting basis. Everything is on trial and error and in the end the country and the people suffers. So what is so wrong for a small blunder by DAP rule in Penang? We have suffered countless mega blunders by the BN rule for more than 50 years.

DAP has to put on their best thinking caps in this dilema between progress and conservation. What is the use of holding on to all these delapidated house infested with white ants? They might be over 100 years old. But what is 100 or 200 or 500 years old houses? Other places have houses that are easily over 1,000 years and more of history, for example China. They have so many many more ancient structures than us here. Credit for posterity will go to them. we are peanuts. We have make a hue and cry over such a minor issue because the previous BN gomen wanted to tell everyone that they are the champions to be able to reach out to the world organistion for support. That is all. Political mileage, at the end of the day. And whats worse, just before the UNESCO decision, the BN gomen did their utmost to approve as many a project as possible in the city. Why? They must get their commission before they are not allowed to develop the city anymore later.

I say damn UNESCO. I suspect the developers of these hotels are just using UNESCO to get out of their quandary anyway. In this coming crisis - will they lose money if they go ahead and build their hotels? If they sue the Penang govt - they save money from not building their hotels and squeeze some money from their law suit - nice situation for them don't you think?

I say let them build their hotels and sue them if they fail to do so.

Batsman,

Totally agree with you. Lets put the developer in for a test.

First, negotiate to relocate the projects. Discuss in good faith over the errors committed by the state government and previous coalition.

If negotiation fail, charge them a 30 million security deposit before commencing construction. Lets see if they genuinely still want to proceed construction at this period on uncertainty. Treat it as a deposit to conplete the work or ratify any wrong doings during construction (learn from the King of Tennis fiasco).

As, MPPP should give a warning to the developers that their projects will be scrutinize to the very detail during construction, and works de done only at night to avoid traffic woes....LGE can also personally "monitor" the project in case they try to bribe their way or be funny.

Want to play hardball, lets play....
