By Kristina George, NST

Deputy Higher Education Minister Datuk Idris Haron yesterday dared former Universiti Malaya vice-chancellor Datuk Rafiah Salim to write her "expose", saying the ministry had nothing to hide.

"We have no control over her decision to write a book. Lots of books have been published. It is an individual's right to author a book. The question is whether the public would purchase the book based on its author or its contents."

He said he was not worried about any expose as the ministry had always conducted matters transparently.

He had been asked to comment on a report that Rafiah was working on publishing a book based on her 21/2-year tenure at UM that would expose the "political nuisances" she had allegedly endured.

Idris said he had not singled out Rafiah in Parliament last Thursday by saying she had not performed or that her track record was not up to mark.
"It was never my contention to defame any particular person. If you check what I had said in Parliament, you would know I had not mentioned any names and I stand firmly by this," he said after closing the first International Seminar on Comparative Law 2008 at Putrajaya Marriott.

Idris also denied there was any gender discrimination involved when Rafiah's contract was not extended.

"She was the first woman to be vice-chancellor and that in itself proves she was worthy of the post. The decision to not extend her tenure was made by the selection committee and is not to be questioned."

On a separate issue, he said two of the seven Malaysian students on scholarships from a government-linked company who "went missing" in Australia had been tracked down.

He said the ministry was depending on the Umno Youth social welfare secretariat to help bring them back home.

Whether Rafiah Salim was a good Vice Chancellor or not is hard to determine but Idris Haron is definitely a very poor deputy minister. We are yet to find one brilliant minister in our cabinet, let alone deputy minister !

Rafiah's pique is justified. She was UMNO's running dog but yet was ditched unceremoniously. The reason is simple, she was aligned to Badawi's camp and the new guy Jasmon is aligned to, yes you guessed it, Mahathir!

Her cancellation of the speech by Shirin Ebadi, Nobel Prize winner and formerly a judge in Iran who was going to talk on Islam and Cultural Diversity shows her lack of respect for excellence, freedom or speech and human rights. What a damning indictment for someone who claims to be a law professor!

She does not even have a PhD, a basic requirement for any serious academic let alone VC of the premier university get she can boast about her 'excellence'. Let us face it, she was in that position purely because she was Malay.

Also judging from the way she conducted herself during the Malaysiakini interview, it would appear she is lacking ' that thing' between her ears as well as between her legs! smilies/grin.gif

Dear Rafiah,

If you have fallen out of the UMNO regime, there is no way you can be reappointed in any higher learning institution in Malaysia. On the other hand, if you are a no brainer with minimal academic credentials, but than, if you are connected with UMNO; than you will be appointed on top posts at higher learning institutions in this country. In other words, appointment are based on your political orientation.

Hey. . ., we have "Big Fat Mama" as Chansellor of UNISEL, aren't we?

No need to wonder why the ratings for our higher learning instituions are going down the drain!!!

2 out of 7 scholarship holders went missing. Is this a track record worthy of the ministry? Shouldn't the minister resign?

How many of our kids in hostels take drugs or join Mat Rempits? How many of our graduates have not found jobs within 1 year of graduating?

Minister of Education - pls explain your track record.

It's always the case with UMNO goons that when they will say something and claim people misinterpreted their words later. What to expect from morons!!! Rite?
