The internal audit report outlines how certain company officials had altered the minutes of board meetings; advanced monies without contracts and dodgy investments.

Pempena Sdn Bhd executive chairman Datin Paduka Chew Mei Fun vowed that action will be taken for the millions in losses in the Tourism Ministry subsidiary but was non-committal when asked if those responsible will be held accountable.

Pempena Sdn Bhd, Datuk Hj Idros Mohd (R) chats with Executive
Chairman of Pempena Sdn Bhd, Datin Paduka Chew Mei Fun during PC
at PWTC.

She also refused to give a direct answer when asked if the law will catch up with the perpetrators of fraud which cost the company RM50 million in bad investments and suspect decisions.

"I don’t have to answer you now as to the status of our investigations, but I assure you we are taking action to rectify whatever had happened before (our time)," she told a press conference at the company’s office in Menara Dato Onn today.

She said her team, which was poring over the audit report from PriceWaterhouseCoopers (PWC), which among others revealed that as of June, Pempena had invested RM54.4 million in 24 companies, with only four profitable.

"We are also looking at the internal audit and will do the needful," she said, adding that this included lodging police reports.

The internal audit report outlines how certain company officials had altered the minutes of board meetings; advanced monies without contracts and dodgy investments.

On a report lodged by member of parliament Lim Kit Siang at the Dang Wangi police station today, Chew said Pempena was open to cooperating with the police.

Questioned on some of these investments and decisions not to recoup losses, she retorted: "We won’t answer for what happened before us."

She also took Lim to task – the whole purpose of the press conference – for remarks the Ipoh Timur MP made against her on Tuesday.

"The Minister of Tourism was appointed in March 2008 whilst the new management of Pempena was put in place in May. The minister and Pempena have been transparent by making available the PWC business review report to Lim. It is disappointing that these efforts have been undermined and attacked by Lim," she read out from a statement.

Addressing Lim’s allegations, she said Pempena’s staffing of 57 workers had followed procedures.

Asked how those who had applied for research officers in the minister’s office had instead been appointed as directors and general managers, Chew replied: "It is up to the company to give them a job that we feel fits them. Is there anything wrong?"

She also denied that she was given a company car, saying that she used her own car for official functions – this despite an internal memo which showed that her position comes with perks such as a car and driver.

She also said there was no conflict between her work in Pempena and her duties as Wanita MCA chief and that there was no need for her to take up the Pempena post as she had received various offers from the private sector.

"I however accepted the job in Pempena as my national duty," she said, adding that these duties included attending post cabinet meetings and chairing management meetings, as well as being a member of the International Advisory Council for the ministry.

Also present were Pempena CEO Datuk Idrus Mohamed and human resource manager Zul Aman Shah.

Asked on allegations addressed in the internal audit where several Pempena staff had not been paid their salaries for up to four months, Chew dismissed them as "poison pen letters". Idrus, while saying these allegations were "news to me", said he was willing to investigate if there was evidence to this.

Meanwhile, after lodging his police report Lim said: "The company has lost RM20 million and there is a lot of hanky panky and monkey business here. The minister owes everyone an explanation. There is basis for the police to investigate these losses."

He said he also learnt that the ministry wanted another RM5 million to keep Pempena afloat.

As an ex-MP of PJ Utara, she was known as "Longkang MP" (only knows how to clear drains in the constitution). Perhaps in PAMPENA, she was made in-charge of the drainage cleanliness in the country's tourism spots only... nothing more! That's why we can't blame her for knowing nothing about the said misuse of funds...

Darn, why can't they give me that exec chairman's position so that I too, can do my 'national duty'. After all, I need it more than Chow Mei Fun. And I am sure political strings aside, I AM much more qualified than her. Please appoint me as Khazanah Chairman, so that I can do my national duty.

What a glorious way to say, that 'It's political payoff for me for losing my MP seat' huh, MeiFun? Ah, same as Lee Hwa Beng .... hmmm, wonder how the PKFZ investigations are coming along. The silence is so deafening until we almost forgot about that one, Ong Tee Keat and uncle Hwa Beng.

All the investigations will come to nought ... we are neither stupid nor naive, we know the end result is always the CORRUPT politicians will get away with economic PLUNDER, and escape due punishment, but Chew is really a BRAZEN female to try and dupe the Malaysian public !

Pempena is but a vehicle for the UMNOputras to make more money, and plunder Malaysia further.

How can a MCA stooge ever take action against UMNO cronies and hangers-on?
Look at the billions we have lost in bad management and investments. Look at the AGs reports?
Nothing ever happens to the culprits as they laugh their way to the bank with their ill gotten gains.

Like all state firms, Pompena was a cash-cow for the (Tuan) vultures to loot. LKS can cry heaven and earth, it would come to absolutely nothing at all.

What business acumen has this Chew had to be appointed as Executive Chairman? By now had she still not realised that this is the proverbial crumb under the table being doled out by those who had their sumptuous meals? She calls that national duty to slurp up the thrash?

How pathetic!

In any private business entity, the chairman would be asked to resign and top management sacked if they are found responsible. In the case of criminal behaviour, they would be hauled to the courts. But in Bolehland, you only get a slap on the wrist for stealing millions of rakyat's money. Shouldn't they be put under ISA for sabotaging our economy?

Ms Chew Mei Fun, are you saying that just because you were appointed 6 months ago, you are not responsible for the company? If you had been more diligent in your work, you would have spotted the wrong doing and taken the initiative to make a police report YOURSELF. You do not wait for someone else to bring it up, then go running to the press the wash your hands clean of the issue. It is time you learnt, as CEO/Chairman of a company, YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE even for whatever you inherit or takeover. Let us all be VERY CLEAR about it!

Time to protect the cronies. Learn form the British...

NEWSNIGHT - WEDNESDAY 19th NOVEMBER 22.30 GMT - BBC TWO

LIBERATA
Tonight Newsnight hears from a whistle-blower who tells us the inside
story of Liberata - the huge outsourcing company which has today been
sacked by the government after it failed to provide grants for
sixth-formers. He tells us that the company was told a year in advance
that "they couldn't deliver the service" but they didn't tell the
government or the Learning and Skills Council. College principals are
outraged and tell us the Liberata team should be "shot at dawn". What's
more the whistle-blower tells us Liberata also had problems with local
council work. He says they failed to produce council tax bills in time
for the deadline so sent out thousands of empty envelopes to taxpayers
in the hope the council would never find out.

Becareful, Mei Fun, you may get molotov cocktails thrown into your house, and you will know who the culprits are then!! Don't forget UMNO controls the judiciary, the police, the ACA, and everything else that moves, so please don't talk cock.
