ALOR STAR: The possibility of a by-election has been averted for now following the move by Barisan Nasional’s Kuala Nerang assemblyman Datuk Syed Sobri Syed Hashim to settle a RM150,000 bank loan.

The Padang Terap Umno division vice-chairman said he had asked his lawyer to submit an application to the court to set aside a bankruptcy order.

On Nov 3, Deputy Registrar Najwa Che Mat declared Syed Sobri a bankrupt in a High Court hearing, sparking speculation of a possible by-election.

Syed Sobri’s appeal against the bankruptcy order will be heard on Dec 1.

“I have settled the RM150,000 loan. I should be cleared of the charges soon,” he told newsmen after attending a mass circumcision ceremony he organised with the Kuala Nerang Hospital here yesterday.

Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Azizan Abdul Razak said he was glad the matter would be settled soon.

“We do not want to waste funds and resources on a by-election,” he said.

Dear Allah, We sincerely pray that you bring Justice to Malaysia.
We pray that you Bring the Corrupt UMNO to and End.
We cannot suffer any more under these Evil People.
They have robbed, raped and plundered your Holy Land for far too Long.
And the Guy who swears by your name, is only a common Thief, and a Murderer.
May you have Mercy on him, when he is executed.

Amin

Isn't it worrying how Barisan Nasional’s assemblyman is allowed to be bankrupt and yet retain his position. It shows the quality of people working under BN. More worrying is, isn't it convenient that when a BN assemblyman needs to no longer be bankrupt, money suddenly appears and they get given a clean record.

How can anyone vote for these people?

I wonder the morals of this character, who owes the bank yet refuses to settle the loan until a bankruptcy order was issued to him. Yet, he was allowed to retain his elected role. I wonder if the RM150,000 that appeared is an advance for future projects. He did not dispute the charge which only goes to prove that he legitimately defaulted on the loan. I hope his constituency will wise up to this character and boot him out.

I wish it is compulsory for elected representatives to declare their assets and source of income. If an elected rep who was declared bankrupt suddenly can pay off the debt, I worry that the money may have come from an external source and have it's own strings attached.
