(The New Straits Times) - IPOH: The Perak DAP is prepared to contest fewer seats in the general election to allow Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) to make inroads into the state.
{mosgoogle right} State DAP chairman Ngeh Koo Ham said it planned to contest 20 state seats.
He said this was to avoid three-cornered fights which had adversely affected the party's chances in the last polls.
Ngeh said the party could have fared better against the Barisan Nasional the last time if they had fought in two-cornered contests.
"We entered into negotiations with PKR some time ago with both parties nearing an agreement on seat allocation. "We have met three times to discuss the distribution of seats.
"I believe that we will come to an agreement soon to avoid three-cornered fights," he said yesterday.
The last general election saw the two parties lock horns with the Barisan Nasional in three-cornered fights in seven state and three parliamentary constituencies.
The state seats were Kuala Kurau, Kuala Sepetang, Aulong, Jalong, Bercham, Jelapang and Simpang Pulai while the parliamentary constituencies were Taiping, Sungai Siput and Teluk Intan.
Ngeh said PKR had asked for more state seats.
"Despite the ongoing negotiations, the state DAP has submitted the list of proposed candidates to the central working commitee," he added.
The state DAP also plans to contest 10 parliamentary seats, two more than in 2004.
It had won three parliamentary and seven state seats.
