KUALA LUMPUR: Lawyer Karpal Singh lodged a police report against Chief Justice Tan Sri Zaki Tun Azmi on statements made by Zaki that he knew two retired judges suspected of being corrupt.
Karpal Singh who is also DAP national chairman lodged the police report at the Dang Wangi district police headquarters on Thursday. In the report, Karpal Singh urged the police or the Anti-Corruption Agency (ACA) to conduct a thorough investigation under Prevention of Corruption Act 1961 on the statements made by Zaki. He said Zaki made the statements at a convention in Kuching that was published in an English daily on November 8. Zaki was also quoted saying that he knew the two judges personally. “The revelation was made by none other than the head of the judiciary, Zaki, who was morally obliged to lodge a report with the police or the ACA. “Corruption in the judiciary should not be allowed to go undetected in the public interest and Zaki as a Chief Justice should lodge a report if he has not done so,” he said before lodging the police report at the district police headquarters. Karpal Singh said Zaki had also revealed in 1987, when he was then in private practice, that he was blacklisted when he complained to the chief registrar about two missing files belonging to his clients. “Zaki said that it took him six months to be nice, to bribe each and every individual to get back into their good books before their files were attended to. “Such statements if proven to have been uttered by Zaki clearly exposes him to prosecution under Section 4(b) of the Prevention of Corruption Act,” he said. Karpal Singh said everyone was equal in the eyes of the law and that Zaki must be treated like any ordinary citizen. “The court must be there to defend the individuals but if the court itself is corrupt, how can the people rely on the court,” he said, adding that unlike civil cases, there was no limitation period for criminal prosecution such as in this case. - The Star
