Many people are familiar with Nelson Mandela's autobiography called A Long Walk to Freedom. Well, Malaysia will now have its own long run to freedom
Praba Ganesan of Malaysiakini wrote an article that detailed "a novel way to increase awareness on the continued detention of the five Hindu Rights Action Force (Hindraf) leaders and to add pressure on the government to free them."
This weekend, DAP of Selangor is organising a run - dubbed the 'Makkal Sakhti 5 Freedom Run' - over the weekend (Nov15-16).
Personally, I think it is a real novel idea to organize this run which will kick off in Klang and end at the gates of the Kamunting Detention Centre in Perak.
According to Dr. Wong Aun Peng, Organizing Chairperson of the run, about 5000 people are expected to participate in this 350km run.
Of notable mention is that a 'special flag' will be passed from one runner to another during the entire journey. Finally, the last runner will hand the flag as well as ‘three larger banners’ to Taiping MP Nga Kor Ming in Kamunting, where the ISA Detention Centre is located. At the same time, DAP of Selangor will be canvassing signatures from the public to support their cause.
In an attempt to further increase awareness of the need to repeal the ISA, another anti-ISA candlelight vigil will be held later in the evening to call for the release of the five and protest against the Internal Security Act.
I find this effort to be both symbolic, meaningful and heartwarming because not only does it unite those who are against the ISA but it also illustrates, in terms of the physical distance and exertion, the long fight that we have to lobby for the government to repeal the ISA.
Quite a number of politicians will be taking part in this event including:
* PKR’s Manikavasagam who will run through his Kapar parliamentary constituency *PAS’ Dzulkefly Ahmad who will do the same through his Kuala Selangor seat. *DAP Selangor chairperson * Selangor exco Ean Yong Hian Wah * Puchong MP Gobind Singh * Selangor exco Ronnie Liu * Klang MP Charles Santiago * Selangor state speaker Teng Chang Khim.
Raja Petra Kamaruddin will be present at the start of the run in Klang. READ MORE HERE: http://masterwordsmith-unplugged.blogspot.com/
