Loganath Velloo, The Star

What was touted as Big Bang, Penang has instead turned out to be Big Blow, Penang.

The seats are up, the court is ready, but with the Kings of Tennis event, scheduled to be held at Esplanade here scrapped, organisers are looking at massive losses estimated at RM17.5mil (US$5mil).

The grass on the field near the historical Fort Cornwallis was dug up and the surface tarred before the tennis court was laid. Now, the organisers have to return the field to its original condition.

The three-day tournament was scheduled to start tomorrow and feature former world number one players like Pete Sampras, Mats Wilander, John McEnroe and Bjorn Borg.

However, the Swedish-based producers decided not to send the players to Penang after the local organisers allegedly failed to pay the promised funds.

Yesterday, the makeshift ticketing booth outside the Penang City Hall building remained closed while construction work had stopped.

State Tourism Development, Culture, Arts and Heritage Committee chairman Danny Law Heng Kiang expressed regret that the event had been cancelled.

“Tournament organising chairman Arianna Teoh called me on Tuesday night and insisted that the event would go on. But I am resigned to the fact that the international players will not be coming to Penang.

“The state government should not be held responsible for the cancellation as we only endorsed the huge project, and were not partners in organising it. The initiative was taken by a private organisation, with the state authorities only helping them get the venue,” said Law.

He revealed that the state had waived the RM2mil bank guarantee needed for the organisers to set up the structures at the Esplanade Heritage Site. A check with the Penang Municipal Council (MPPP) office also revealed that the RM200,000 rental for the usage of the Esplanade field has not been paid.

Law said the council would get tough on the organisers if they failed to keep their agreement to restore the venue to its original condition after the structures are brought down.

“Even with the cancellation, the organisers are responsible for the restoration of the field. If they don’t comply, action will be taken against them.

“The Kings of Tennis event is a good lesson for the Penang government to be more careful and we will not simply endorse future projects in the state,” added Law.

Meanwhile, Gerakan Youth Tanjung Division chief H’ng Khoon Leng, who visited the venue, hit out at the state government for not checking the organisers’ background before endorsing the project.

“It is a big embarrassment. I am also shocked that the MPPP allowed the organisers to destroy the field at the heritage site to put up the venue,” said H’ng.

Teoh, a former Miss Malaysia, could not be reached for comment.

If one is a tennis fan, you will know that an event like this will not bring in a large crowd big enough to recoup the money spent. Even the just concluded ladies final in Doha did not attract a full stadium. What more if the proposed event feature only past champions. Malaysians are not exactly enthusiastic fans of tennis. Sponsors are hard to come by these days with the economy going down the drain.

There are only 2 possibilities ... Ariana Teoh is all boobs and no brains and should stick to catwalking instead of organizing events which is obviously too taxing for that miniscule brain of hers, or she is being kept by an UMNOputra who has used her to make the Penang Govt. look bad.

Either way, she should be bloody ashamed of herself, but then again, these Anjing of the Govt. have no idea of what shame is ! What a horrible black heart in a human body.

such damage to one of the very few fields left in Penang - dig, dig, dig again to restore. why couldn't they just draw lines on the grass? this is just an exhibition match (i think) and playing on grass is sufficient. anyway, old guys (even though they were tennis greats) do not attract. Now, if they had brought in Rafa or Fedex, that's a way different story!

The state government must look into the this event and why it failed and what are the recourse for it. Will the ticket holders be refunded accordingly? That the organizers still have the funds to restore the venue especially when the guarantee was already waived? Is the money trail correct - money recieved from sponsors channeled to the right parties etc....? Details of the agreement between the organisers and players reps? It doesn't bode with for the image of the state government, so LGE must show actions are being taken from this fracas..

This would be a good test for the Penang State Govt.

Will there be an investigation on why the Bank Guarantee of RM2.0 million was waived and the RM200,000 rental for the field was not paid but yet the organisers were allowed to proceed with the preparations for the event?

If the event was successful, all this would not have surfaced, but the fact remains that rules meant to protect the state were bended and broken. the end result is that the State may suffer loss.

So the question now are :

1. Will there be an investigation to find out who was responsible for the waiver and the non collection of rental?
2. Why were the waivers given? was there the promise of a kickback?
3. what action will be taken against those responisble.

Bear in mind that the PR govt is promoting itself to be Clean Efficient and Transparent govt. The eyes of the nation will be watching on whether they are serious, or what they have trumpeted is all talk.

their response will determine if they will be retained or removed come the next elections.

I hate the Star. Not as much as NST but the reporting is the same. They're waiting to blow up any issue against PR and then they down play or ignore major failings or crimes by BN. I don't mind them highlighting mistakes made by the opposition but this article is obviously trying to paint them in as bad a picture as they possible can. You can see the story here is well overdone. Wonder when we can get good, honest and fair reporting from the MSM. Malaysia really needs change desperately.

when their glory days are over they try so hard to prove that they are still relevant and drag us along into the cesspool

she should be applying for a job at the mahathir foundation

Common sense would tell you that the tennis stars would never come. We are not into this game. We are nobody in the World of Tennis. Tennis is a big time money game in the west and the stars must be paid well, how can we afford it - Malaysia is a small country and the people are struggling to stay alive.

This project may take off if it is in Singapore or Hongkong. In Malaysia, it make more sense to invite the Melaka Datuk at Bollywood, surely not Tennis star! After all, invitation to the Melaka Datuk at Bollywood will help you to be in the good book of Tun Dr Mahathir Mohd and Ali Syaitan(0op Rustam).

Big dreams for tennis to make it big in Malaysia. Coupled with wrong timing too - big boys companies are making cut backs in spending, a lavish project like this can only happen in Hollywood, (or Bollywood?).
The Star highlighting this project, including Datuk WongChunWai highlighting this in his personal blog sure makes it look bad for the Penang Govt.
If the Penang Govt cannot get the organisers to restore the field, then too bad, its BAD for the Penang Govt.
