KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia - Three politicians have qualified to contest the No. 2 post in Malaysia's ruling party _ a key job that has usually been filled by unanimous nomination and never in a three-cornered fight.

During monthlong party caucuses that ended Sunday, an unprecedented three candidates secured enough nominations to contest the deputy leader's post of the United Malays National Organization party on March 26, 2009.

The winner will also become Malaysia's deputy prime minister.

The intense fight expected for the post indicates growing factionalism in UMNO, a party once seen as a unified monolithic power center that has run the government since 1957.

The favorite to win is Trade Minister Muhyiddin Yassin who will be challenged by Rural Development Minister Muhammad Muhammad Taib and Malacca state chief minister Mohamad Ali Rustam.

Mohamad Mustafa Ishak, a political analyst at North Malaysia University, said Monday the fact that Muhyiddin's two challengers received enough nominations shows that party members are no longer willing to simply endorse a candidate that top leaders have chosen.

"Given the current scenario, it shows that democracy is alive and kicking in UMNO. ... Clearly now it's the grass roots that determine" who is a good candidate, he said.

Muhyiddin won more than 90 nominations from the party's 191 districts, far higher than the required 38. But Mohamad Ali and Muhammad also collected more than 40 nominations each.

In most past elections, the post was filled either unanimously or sometimes in two-cornered contests.

Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, who has announced he will not defend his position in the March elections, told reporters Sunday that a three-cornered fight was good for the party even though it may lead to factions. He called on party members to unite after the elections.

"I hope it will not lead to a split in the party," he said.

UMNO is the central pillar of the 13-party National Front coalition but holds most Cabinet posts and virtually all political power.

I'm really enjoying the giant cracks in UMNO. Gangsterism, womanising, idol worshipping, bribery are the names of their game. How can there be honour among thieves? Sooner or later they will kill each other.

This is not democracy, please don't insult our intelligence. It is cattle bidding to the highest bidder. I wonder which cow will get slaughtered?

Sit back and enjoy the UMNO walls crashing. smilies/grin.gif

It also shows that either UMNO is bankrupt of capable leaders or the grassroots have benn bought and paid for.
Dr.M the longest serving UMNO president himself likened M2Taib and Ali Rustam to clowns for contesting the no.2 post.
Now that the "clowns" actually got enough nominations, I wonder what he has got to say.

What a circus.

UMNO being the ruling party for 50 years in Malazut land. would have been expected to be more mature. Not only they nominated all those proven corrupted leaders, they even have to fight amongst themselves with chairs thrown just to enabled their corrupted leaders to be nominated. If this party is not destryed soonest, then god save this planet.

Please some body must stop this rot. Can u imaigine Ali Rustam the racist fellow who told those non Malay parties like PPP to get out of the coalition just before GE, or Muhamad Taib who absconded with the Sultan's daughter and also caught in Australia with alot of money being our DPM. And like adding salt to the an open wound our famous Thamby Chik who raped a young girl in Mallaca also contested and lost. Luckly he lost.Im sure alot of money is involved here.

For so long as these are the quality of leaders in UMNO, we can look forward to better days ahead when Pakatan whoops UMNO's sorry arse. In fact, I can't help but look forward to either "Mike Tyson" or Ali Rustam becoming DPM, because one is clearly corrupt and the other is cleary a Malay ultra. Nothing like these characters will drag UMNO down into the Abyss.
