Anwar Ibrahim’s Press Statement on Release of Raja Petra and Internal Security Act (ISA) PDF Print

The release of Raja Petra Kamaruddin from ISA detention is a victory for the people of Malaysia. In its ruling against the Home Ministry, the High Court of Shah Alam has exposed exposed yet another crack in the steadily eroding wall of justification surrounding the ISA.

I commend the courts which have come to the rescue, as they must do, when citizens are rendered helpless before arbitrary authority and its inclination to the abuse of power. It is through the judge’s commitment to justice that Raja Petra will once again experience the freedom that is the birthright of all Malaysians.

This episode underscores the fact that the government of the day is unfit to lead. By the sheer arrogance of its perceived grip on power, it has failed to recognise and respond to the Malaysian people’s desire for democracy, freedom and adherence to the rule of law.

Those BN leaders and particularly cabinet members who expressed staunch support of the ISA should feel remorse over the hardship that has been foisted upon Raja Petra, his family and the many others still detained without hopes of trial.

To those members of Parliament who have been silent in response to Pakatan Rakyat’s efforts to initiate a debate on abolishing the ISA, I urge you to reconsider your position. The Court’s decision today offers a new opportunity to work together to rid Malaysia of this unjust law once and for all.

Many others still languish in prison under the draconian ISA, including members of Hindraf and individuals allegedly involved with radical groups such as Jemaa Islamiyah. They all deserve the right of judicial review.

I reiterate my call for their immediate release and that any credible charges against them should be made in a court of law.

ANWAR IBRAHIM

The dracoian ISA has been abused by BN to hold on to power. The Act threatens individual rights and freedom of expression in a democracy. Unfotunately Malaysia is a police state and not a democracy as it claims to be. Everyday the shouts for freedom gets louder yet the BN government is determined to act against dissent. BN will not change, it will continue to grip on to power at whatever the cost as it has too much to loose.

This government will mis-use power just to stay in power.

The only option the rakyat have is to throw the government out.

Yes DSAI! I completely agree with you on this . What shocks me is a dropout of a Law Minister wanting to appeal. To Nazri this is what i like to ask you!

Do you know Altantuya? her father Mr. Sharibou is so heart broken that you TREAT THE judiciary like it was your stinking socks! changing stories , blocking evidence to your whims and fancies.Afterall its under you watch now. I want to also see you at the ICJ , of how you will mumble! Why didnt you appeal after Baginda was freed? Is there an ulterior motive? I also like to appeal to all the muftis in town of what they feel, after they see this pics:All in the family! See more here:

To hurt the citizen you are duty bound to protect simply because his words and
deeds upset your desire for absolute power, these are the hallmarks of tyrants.
These animals deserve the hatred and scorn of the people.

The speech by DSAI is expected of a leader of Pakatan Rakyat, no more, no less. He must get his shadow cabinet in place so that PR can edge out BN and take over smoothly. Do consider Zaid Ibrahim for the post of Law Minister and let us review the Chief Justice's position and put someone else there that has almost unquestionable integrity, and change the designation back to Lord President.

The Barisan Najis Govt.'s days are numbered ...

Proarte, I can't imagine how, in the present age, people can still maintain their medieval mentality and try to shove their ideas and believes, through another persons throat? When the British tortured Gandhi, he said something like this: "You can torture me, hurt me or even kill me, but you can't have my obedience"! Maybe I should burn my bridges with PKR.

enough criticism of an incompetent government. what is PR going to do to take over the BN government as that is the only way to clean up and persecute the BN warlords in the court of law. we need PR to take actions to continue to replace BN instead of engaging them for debates.

“I reiterate my call for their immediate release and that any credible charges against them should be made in a court of law”.

DSAI, in making that statement, my mind pictured you standing outside the huge walls of UMNO's castle waving a small rotan and threating to bring down powerful UMNO with it.
Where’s the beef, man!

Oh please, Ahmeneil! Not again! If anyone want to cross over. Just do it and call for Press COnference 30 mins before the event. Don;t leaked it out here. You get eyeballs but also let BN take preventive measures. If the cross over does not happen it will be the "boy calling out wolf" once too many times. make ppl more geram with DSAI.
