Both Mr Ali and Mr Muhammad could likely signal a return to concentrating on Malay rights, a move that could damage relations with the ethnic Chinese and ethnic Indian communities.

Reuters

NOMINATIONS to fill senior posts in Malaysia's dominant party (Umno) will close on Sunday and with the top job decided, attention is now on the fight for the deputy leadership, at a time of major economic challenges.

Who fills that post could define whether Najib Razak, who will become prime minister in March, pushes forward with reforms and reaches out to non-Malay voters or whether he hunkers down and appeals to the Malay majority, 60 per cent of the population.

Mr Najib, 55, himself was deputy president of the United Malays National Organisation (Umno), a post that also made him deputy prime minister and will do the same for his successor.

Umno leads the Barisan Nasional coalition that has ruled Malaysia for 51 years. It recorded its worst ever election result earlier this year and is now under attack from a resurgent opposition. That election performance led to Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi agreeing to hand power to Mr Najib.

WHAT IS THE PROCESS

If a candidate gets more than 39 votes from the geographical divisions that make up Umno, he is entitled to stand in the party polls due in March.

International Trade and Industry Minister Muhyiddin Yassin, 61, surged at the start of the month-long party voting process and has already qualified with 79 nominations.

But since then two other candidates have emerged with a real chance, likely forcing a contest in March. This would be the first time the post has gone to a vote in over 20 years if it does.

The two are Malacca Chief Minister Mohd Ali Rustam, who needs seven more votes to reach the 39 nominations and Muhammad Muhammad Taib, a senator, who needs 10 more.

The nomination for Mr Ali, 59, gained steam after Mr Abdullah told party leaders anyone has the right to go for the No. 2 post. But he has denied he was throwing his support to Mr Ali.

Mr Muhammad, 63, is Umno's information chief and resigned in 1997 as chief minister of Selangor state after he was charged in Brisbane with attempting to take undeclared cash equivalent to A$1.26 million (S$1.26 million) out of Australia.

What would they bring

Both Mr Ali and Mr Muhammad could likely signal a return to concentrating on Malay rights, a move that could damage relations with the ethnic Chinese and ethnic Indian communities.

It was the parties from these two communities which lost most heavily in elections in March this year when the Barisan Nasional won less than two thirds of parliament seats.

Both Mr Ali and Mr Muhammad were teachers before they decided to become career politicians, and neither speaks fluent English.

Mr Muhyiddin by contrast is a trained economist, speaks English and is reckoned to have a sharp brain. He has stayed well away from anti-Chinese comments that appeal to the Malay hard core.

In an editorial last month, Sin Chew, a Chinese newspaper associated with the Malaysian Chinese Association (part of Barisan Nasional), noted his emollient approach.

'In the aftermath of Umno/BN's disaster in the March 8 polls, he quickly repositioned himself as an independent voice in the party. Muhyiddin, interestingly enough, kept himself above the orgy of race-baiting some Umno leaders chose to engage in,' it wrote.

By contrast, the Umno-friendly New Straits Times daily wrote on Friday that party grassroots wanted a contested poll in March to show their disapproval over the managed power transition.

'It's an opportunity for the grassroots to vent pent-up feeling of wanting to choose the future party leader,' it quoted party veteran Hassan Harun as saying. 'There has been no contest for the deputy president's post for more than two decades.' Whoever wins, time is tight and urgent action is needed.

The economy is turning down with economic growth set to slump to just 3.5 per cent next year from 5.4 per cent this year.

That's the slowest pace since 2001. At the same time there is a risk that racial tensions could reignite as unemployment rises.

'When Najib takes over, he only has small window of opportunity to institute change,' said Mr Abdullah Ahmad, a former aide to Mr Najib's father, the country's second prime minister.

Of course, it is the UMNO members who will decide who'll be the deputy president and by extension the DPM.
But since it affects all Malaysians I can only hope they make their choice wisely.
Muhammad's history leaves nothing to the imagination except for those who will not see.
Ali, ah yes, he's the chap who told all the mosquito parties to go packing as he feels UMNO can stand on its own.
Yes, Muhyiddin many a story has been told of him, but none proven as yet.
So, may the best man win.

CM Ali, a well known for boot-licking the top for more allocations ($$$) for rubbish mega projects in Malacca that brings nothing at all to the poor kampung folks. Every of his projects are enriching himself, his 4B Belia gang, Hatta Group and many other cronies. In Ayer Keroh, most of his initiated all went down in drain. Big buildings are everywhere... BUT no investors / tenants ! Only MITC function once in a whileblue moon. His Mega Car City project is now an open air warehouse for spoilt trucks. RM 400 million river bank project & the bloody dam near Mahkota Bridge are built for his crony company to operate the RM 5 per person joy ride river cruise & so called tourist attraction ! Almost everything he gets his kick backs from the sum that Melaka Govt throws out.

ex-CM Tan SriMuyiddin, need to elaborate more ? Sure lots of money in his pocket. How much did he plundered from Johor Govt. ? As the news had stated,
Both Mr Ali and Mr Muhammad were teachers before they decided to become career politicians, and neither speaks fluent English.

Who really cares which one of the two evils becomes the Deputy President of AMENO? Given time, AMENO and their Insignificant Others which together forms Be End will trully be ended. Reason why that will happen is the choices of their calibre of leaders, look oth He and I No Spe Ker La Ingris. The world look kindly on these people bcos at formation of UN, there is a Social Contract that AMENO putras/putris are given certain privileges and bcos of that will not compete with me fiercely in the GLOBAL MARKET. I hve a dream, dream on my friends smilies/grin.gif

Both of them hve done great service at the Global scenes, one goes down under and get caught, therefore giving the Down Under people something to do, while the other promotes the entertainment business by giving titles to actors and I think not too far in the future actresses.

I am sure glad they don't understand wat I am writing, as THEY NO SPE KER LE INGRIS, ACTUALLY u don't need INGRIS to strive in a GLOBAL environment, so they think smilies/grin.gif

I travel from KL to Bukit Rambai Melaka quite often. From the Alor Gajah toll to Bukit Rambai there are 12 traffic lights, some of which are absolutely unnecessary. This stretch covering about 20km will take you 30mins to complete simply because you have to stop every 2km or so. Traffic lights pun bagi kat crony gah?

Speaker Pandikar Amin is an obstacle to Justice and the progress of democracy in Malaysia. This gutter politician from Umno who thinks highly of himself, must be treated with disdain by the Rakyat especially when this bully with white shit hanging down his chin made YB Fong Po Kuan cry for standing up for the Rakyat. Time to pass a motion of no confidence on this oxymoron Pandikar the Pig...More http://margeeamr.********.com

Frankly, it doesn't matter to me who wins the elections in UMNO. UMNO will never be an option in my books. If you look at the current leaders, you will see that they have all reached the highest positions in the party by playing the race card. And this will continue to be the positions of the new leaders. This is the only way they know how to build up their political base and strength, i.e. by playing the race(and now) the religious card.

And sad to say, the UMNO Malays see this as their best option.

Once there were three brothers, Ano, Petani and Nelayan. Ani was in politic and his party ruled the country. He told Petani and Nelayan that others were taking things away from them and they should fight to defend their rights to have those things eventhough they were not working for it. He also told them that they were more supreme to the others, eventhough Petani and Nelayan couldn't understand what that meant. Anyway, Ano would called on Petani and Nelayan to shout out loud at others that they would defend their so-called right and supremacy of their community and warned others not to play with fire. After all the shouting, Ano drove off in his Merc while the happy Petani and Nelayan went to take a bus home and back to their poor living. Ano then demanded onto others that his community were poor and therefore they must have the right to be rich. To do that Ano, whose party ruled the country, carried out discriminative policies so that the taxpayers' money could be used to enrich himself. When others complained about the suppressive policies, Ano called his brothers, Petani and Nelayan to take a bus to come to his rescue by shouting together with him about their rights and supremacy and warned others not to challenge them again. After all the shouting, again Petani and Nelayan felt very happy and took the bus back again to their poverty while Ano conitnue to enrich himself. Such a sad story.

They (Mr Ali and MTx2) dare to dream to become DPM is because they (UMNO) are still in control of the Gomen, any number two from UMNO by convention will be our DPM! Its kind of forcing bad food down our throats.

We dare to dream too! we dream that in 5 years time UMNO is completely wipe out, any Tom, Dick and Harry as a P.M. / D.P.M is better that those jokers from UMNO.

There is only one problem though, the Malays need to wake up by and large and realise that they have been sodomised by UMNO for so so long…

It's good news for Malaysia if Ali makes DPM. It'll just precipitate the demise of UMNO from federal power sooner than later. We Malaysians as sick of all these racist partisanship, as if we don't have enough problems competing with the rest of the world. I say bring it on. Malaysia will suffer short term pain, but in the medium term, we'd be better.

The UMNO contenders for the DPM job shows that the party is really behind time and has not learnt anything. Its sad that UMNO does not have any capable, intelligent and inspiring leaders who can lead. The so called leaders are well beyond 55 years old and are 'approved' to govern the country whilst the public must retire at 55. What a joke!!??
