Fatwa on football? PDF Print
Thursday, 30 October 2008 15:15
Well, why not? If the National Fatwa Council is presumably on the verge of banning yoga because its origins are non-Islamic and foreign to Muslim teachings, it seems to me we ought to also be considering a fatwa on all forms of indulgence in football.

Football, particularly the organised form of the game, has its origins in the West – the heart of the infidel world! Indeed, the sport is something deeply embedded in the culture of these infidels. It is associated with, for those who passionately follow the sport,  indulgence in excessive exuberance and cult like fanaticism. Its enthusiasts are often prone to engage in vices like excessive alcohol consumption, gambling, and even hooliganism.

Oh, and while they’re at it, we might as well suggest to these supposed ‘religious scholars’ that they may also want to issue a fatwa prohibiting men from cooking. You see apparently, ‘at [a] fatwa council meeting, the religious scholars have also decided to issue a fatwa against females from dressing or behaving like men and engaging in lesbian sex.

Council chairperson Abdul Shukor had said that many young women admired the way men dress, behave and socialise, violating human nature and denying their feminity[sic].’

So in the interest of not ‘violating human nature’ and conversely ensuring that men don’t violate their masculinity, I think these co-called religious scholars ought to give serious consideration to issuing a fatwa that would put a stop to men cooking. Don’t you just see the serious threat it would pose to ‘human nature’ and the distinction between femininity and masculinity if we continued to allow men to indulge in hanging around the kitchen and cooking?

You see the fact is, these Taliban like characters who very likely know next to nothing about the origins of the science of yoga - let alone its practice – seem completely at ease to cast aspersions about a complex and scientifically oriented method of mind and body conditioning. Quite transparently, what we see unfolding here is more intent on regulating the lives of others than in respecting the rights of people to pursue their faith as they see it. Specifically, the subtext in these developments about potential fatwas against yoga and ‘tomboys’ seem to be more about patriarchal dominance – not religious sensibilities.

If I was to venture a guess, I would suspect that yoga, if it is at all appeals to any segment of Muslims, it must be drawing a disproportionate amount of attention among urbane women. Just as the concern over ‘human nature’ and ‘femininity’ is obviously directed at regulating women’s conduct.

Ironically, this strikes me as not too far removed from the idea some months back from the foreign and home ministries to require women travelling abroad to carry a permission letter from their employer or family member. Perhaps you remember that little episode?

Perhaps these ‘religious scholars’ are capable of explaining to the wider Muslim population (and others as well) precisely where in religious texts do we find admonitions against dressing like ‘tomboys’ or undertaking a specific form of exercising regiment? [Of course this does not even begin to address the problem of how would you exactly decide when one is 'guilty' of dressing like a 'tomboy.'] Indeed, from the Islamic scholarship and scholars I’ve consulted, one will find about as much stipulated against ‘tomboys’ and yoga as there is against football. Issuing a religious edict against ‘tomboys’ and yoga has about as much grounding in Islamic teaching as issuing a fatwa against football based on Islamic religious grounds. There’s no relevant and credible religious basis for it.

But there sure seems to be a lot of patriarchy as to why these Taliban like religious authorities might find it convenient and appealing to regulate the kind of conduct closely associated with women.

I support Fatwa on Bomoh's. ****** "Bomoh, Rape" and see the correlation yourself.
Rosmah probably wants to Fatwa anyone who uses her name in the same sentence with Altantuya, C4, Murder, or Bomb. That's why RPK is in ISA now.

ABOLISH ISA TODAY !!!

Not only football. Might as well ban all type of sports and exercise. They are all from foreign lands. Perhaps we should go back to swinging from the trees as a past time. In the end, all of us will be like couch potatoes.

The religious body should ban Astro and all TV programs also. Last but not lease, ban the internet. Get Bolehland isolated and be pure. No contact to the outside world. See how long will Bolehland last?

These people really have nothing to do. No wonder they can't progress and understand the world. They still have their heads underneath a coconut shell. One last thing, don't get your children to be doctors. They are not allowed to see and/or touch the opposite sex. What stupid thinking!!!

The National Fatwa Council should also consider banning badminton, squash, volley ball, tennis and all other non-islamic and foreign sports. Perhaps the sword game on horse should be more in line with the belief.

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

Sorry to say this... These ULAMA's are the "decision makers" from the day one. Anything in favour of them, they like it and benefiting them, then they will "approve" the fatwa and "hide" behind the religion as usual. The also using the same concept to "disapprove" something when it's not infavour of them, they don't like it and not benefiting them using religion as the shield. I'm sure some of our friends might not like it BUT this is the fact, allow me to include one article that been posted in Harian Metro on 29/10/08.

ULAMA NIKAH KANAK-KANAK

Ulama kaya kahwin budak 12 tahun dilapor mahu nikah dua kanak-kanak lain berusia 7 dah 9 tahun.

Jakarta: Polis semalam melancarkan siasatan terhadap seorang ulama kaya yang berkahwin dengan budak berusia 12 tahun dan merancang berkahwin lagi dengan kanak-kanak berumur tujuh dan sembilan tahun.....

The latest fatwa is on yoga.
Is more to come?

Well, soon we might as well put on a turban over our heads and don a long flowing robe, and starting chanting as there is nothing more or better to do.

Now there are people usurping God's holy power and believing that they are needed by God to strengthen n protect their religion.
If God needed such help n protection then what religion is it - as it is man-made.
God is omnipotent, omnipresent, omniscient - SO DOES HE NEED a PKR Idiot n others to protect Him.

Lets fatwa all football and that incl TV too. Not even watching sinful football or yoga on TV, lest they be tempted, then all the football players will be sinful for tempting the Muslims with football (menonjolkan aurat too). While I agree that yoga does have spiritual chanting, it should not be fatwa because of non-Islamic.

While we are at it let's outlaw all Western inventions, eg medical equipment, MRI, C-sections, surgeries, printers, cars, aeroplanes, trains, TV, telephones, radios, modern toilet and sewerage, etc etc etc. Why not just declare fatwa on all these once and for all, so that no need to waste time in future.

I hope the religious scholars also declare fatwa on paying toll. Perhaps soon women will be banned from going to work under another man...

I think DAP will win the next GE, seeing how PAS is reverting back to extremism and Malay quota system (in Kedah)

WHAT THE TALIBAN BANS; -

A sample Taliban edict issued after their capture of Kabul is one decreed in December 1996 by the "General Presidency of Amr Bil Maruf and Nahi Anil Munkar" (or Religious Police) banning a variety of things and activities:-

1. Music, - oppose music because it creates a strain in the mind and hampers study of Islam."
2. Shaving of beards,
3. Keeping of pigeons,
4. Flying kites,
5. Displaying of pictures or portraits,
6. Western hairstyles,
7. Music and dancing at weddings,

Anyone carrying or reads objectionable literature will be persecuted (this, the UMNO regime had done)!

Taliban also used sledgehammers to destroy representational works of art at the National Museum of Afghanistan.

(Source : Wikepedia, the free encyclopedia)

WHAT THE TALIBAN DID NOT BAN:
1.Growing of Poppy (used to manufacture heroine)
2.Yoga – never heard of Taliban banning yoga. . . .?

IF THE MAJLIS FATWA DECREED THAT YOGA IS HARMFUL FOR MUSLIMS, THAN MALAYSIA WILL THE FIRST COUNTRY TO DO SO!

EVEN THE TALIBAN DID NOT BAN YOGA. . .!

I cannot understand why so many of you keep heaping insults on religious practices outside your faith.
Most importantly, whether Muslims practise Yoga or not does not infringe on you right as a citizen or your way of living in this country.

Good or not, it's for the Muslims to decide.
Freedom of speech is not a carte blanche to insult the practice and the way of life of others.

As stupid as they may seem, right now they don't infringe on the non-muslims' rights.
If the muslims who abide by these Godmen's rulings, who are the "nons" to complain?
As silly as I may think mawi is in his argument, he does actually have reason to be offended.
There are better ways to engage in an discourse than by heaping ridicule on their "leaders".
No "faithful" from any religion would appreciate such comments ...

I agree with mikewang - It's for Muslims to decide!

I agreed with the Fatwa. Banned all the ladies from sports especially in gyms and swimming. They are too revealing, and many Muslim girls are taking these 2 sports. Ban them. Encourage sports among men especially to promote more gals. Then we will have more sicko men who kiss and hug each other as though as females never exist.

You guys seemed to have forgotten...RPK himself made fun of all these FAT..WAAAHs during his kempen for Nurul Anwar....who won in last pr12.

RPK said Fatwa is the ruling of GOD himself... so how or when did all this ULAMAKs become Gods????

It is really a FAT waaah.. because i say.... waaaaah.. and order direct from God, or self appointed Gods....

As for the few idiots who commented about that non -moslems should keep quiet on moslem issue such as Fatwas, I say to you, screw you. You cannot guarantee that all the FAT WAHs will not be IMPOSED on us non moslems too.

The talibans imposed them to everyone in Afganistan, so it wont be long before the same is done in Malaysia.. in fact it is already done...

In govt offices you Taliban officers are already imposing on the public to dress like a Malay in baju kurung before they are allowed to enter govt offices??

does this not entitle us non moslems to comment and say our piece on this matter>

GO AND FATWA islam itself.... after all, all religion in Malaysia are Haram, they are all Pendatangs...the original religion in malaysia is paganism, so all the rest should GET OUT !!! !!

Faith can be ridiculous at times, to the unbelievers.

Do you, as a practising Christian like me, sometimes have to endure "rulings" from Church elders such as that an exercise in Tai Chi is contrary to Christian practice because the origin of Ying and Yang is deeply rooted in the ancient religion of "dao" regardless of the fact that the exercise is good for the suppleness of the body and the peace of the mind ?

Please look at faith as a matter between man and his God and that the freedom of speech stops where it infringes on the personal beliefs of others that are none of our concern.
If Muslims do not ridicule their leaders for making such rulings, who are we, outside the faith, to have such a privilege to do so ?

I agree with mikewang. If adherents of a certain Faith seek to follow edicts from their religious leaders, why should followers of other Faiths, or freethinkers interfere? It is for the disciples of the Faith to decide.

"Do unto others what you want others to do unto you." This piece of advice given more than 2000 years ago, is still very much applicable.

Hello KKselvam..

Think bro..think...

perkara2 kini yang dibicara menunjuk suatu pemikiran masih primitif. Soalan???
