Datuk Ong Tee Keat is relatively relaxed during his "lone ranger days". Now, he has a lot of worries and the question of whether to recommend Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek to be a minister alone is terribly troubling him.
Ong faces various issues ever since he was elected the MCA President, including personal style of leadership, teamwork, co-operation with other senior leaders, internal factions, as well as governmental and party positions. Perhaps these problems could be avoided if he has first selected a team, which has reached a common consensus on the party's direction, and introduce the team to the party's central delegates during the party elections. He may face backlash from grassroot members if he does not appoint Chua to be Johor Chairman. On the other hand, he has to consider whether Umno will accept it if he recommends Chua to be a minister. Any decision of Ong will surely bring an impact. | "They must forget about all frictions and misunderstandings during the party elections and together, work for the new MCA." |
He has to take into account the balance and feeling of various factions in party position appointments. Party members of Selangor, Johor, Perak, Pahang and Penang are waiting for their President to map out a strategy. There are conflicts among factions after the intense party elections while party members are having high expectations of the new leadership. The newly-elected President must have something to show by the end of the honeymoon period. However, if he is thinking hard how to allocate party positions, it is better to face the reality and have a sincere discussion with Chua, Datuk Dr Ng Yen Yen and other party leaders. They must forget about all frictions and misunderstandings during the party elections and together, work for the new MCA. If leaders are unable to truly cooperate and understand each other, various rumours will be spread and it will be a good opportunity for those with evil intention. Personal style must be adjusted according to the situation. A person may be a lone ranger when he is fighting on his own but when he has to face the change of the whole political environment, it is necessary to combine the wisdom and ability as a whole. The road ahead is not smooth for MCA. Other than knowing how to negotiate with Umno who is trying hard to retain Malay support, MCA must as well lead Chinese to deal with the financial crisis. Chinese are facing a dilemma of choosing a pure Chinese political party or pursuing non-racialism. Besides, the split of Chinese associations has become more serious that hindered the progress pace of Chinese, including the United Chinese School Committees Association of Malaysia. Under the financial turmoil, MCA must as well keep Chinese's economic status and at the same time, look after Chinese educational and cultural integrity. Therefore, new leaders must set a goal, identify core values and lead the party to go all out. If they focus only on disputes, fragmented MCA will not be able to resist the next tsunami for sure.
