Leslie Lau, The Malaysian Insider

During the March general election campaign, the opposition’s message was simple: Barisan Nasional (BN), they told voters, stood for “Barang Naik,” which translates to rising prices.

Then, the oil price hikes, and their consequential effect on inflation, were used to amplify everything that could be wrong with the administration of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.

Now, as Datuk Seri Najib Razak prepares to take over the helm, the economy is even more dire straits.

He is already being judged on his handling of the economy even though he has barely learned the geography of his new office at the Finance Ministry.

Any follies and poor handling of the economy will surely open the door to a parliamentary opposition stronger than any BN government has ever faced.

Malaysians are far less forgiving today.

The opposition Pakatan Rakyat will pounce on any opening to put pressure on the government and any misstep could even result in the government falling before completing even half its term in office.

So far, the prognosis is not good for the Malaysian economy.

And Najib’s first prescription — a RM5 billion injection of borrowed EPF money into the stock market — is not being well received.

The aim is to prop up Malaysia’s stock market.

But it is already being criticised as throwing good money after bad.

The government should realise that Malaysia’s market is very small and will follow global trends.

There is very little confidence now globally in the markets, banks or even the capitalist financial system.

Najib, as the Finance Minister, needs to show more leadership.

He cannot afford to say he will only wait until Nov 4, when he winds up the debate on the Budget in Parliament, to offer details on what the government plans to do.

The market will not wait. It is an unforgiving animal.

There are genuine worries that the future is not bright for Malaysia because the country’s trading partners are all going into recession, which means the market for Malaysian products and services is not strong.

This means Malaysian businesses will need more liquidity.

Perhaps Najib and the rest of Malaysia’s senior government leaders should try to learn a lesson from what is happening in the US presidential election campaign.

The two candidates almost trip over each other in trying to offer an economic plan and to support the proposed bailout when the economy started to turn.

Politics had to be thrown out the window, they both said, as they tried to appeal to voters who were only looking at pocketbook issues.

In Malaysia, Umno is in the middle of an intriguing race for top party posts.

Najib looks a clear certainty in winning the Umno presidency unopposed.

He will have to now concentrate more on providing the kind of leadership needed to manage the economy in what is uncharted territory.

He will not need to be mired in a controversy over the proposed acquisition of 12 Eurocopters.

He will not need to be mired in controversies surrounding race relations.

He will certainly not need to be mired in the politics surrounding his own party or that of the Barisan Nasional.

What he will have to focus on right now is the economy.

If he does not manage the economy well, it could be the end of the road for him and the BN.

What does Najib know about economy, recession, financial crisis etc? He is a real bodoh. The only thing he knows is to get commission in millions or billions from all Malaysian transactions; and that is done through his advisors and cronies. He will not miss a billion or so rinngit if his advisors and cronies swipe it away!

and guess what??? He is our Finance Minister!!

They only know how to manage the country when times are good. When times are bad, please pray real hard. They will know how to spend and self enrichment.

Dear Leslie,
I believe your article above was written in a good gesture, but unfortunately Najis is still looking very hard into the economy. That is in the economy of getting his cronies and others out of the coming economy treshold.
He has also to manage the 1.5 billion he promised to Bodowi in order that he vacate his seat.
That is why Bodowi is so reluctant to leave until this 1.5 bil is allocated as promised.

Now what is most required is to make sure that the ACA report made against Najis is really in the working.

This RM5 Billion is to bail out their own (UMNO Cronies') investments in the stock market that they have been caught with so they can exit without too much loss ! The Rakyat can go to Hell, as usual and lose all their Hard-Earned Savings accumulated over Years & Years of Work, Blood, Sweat, & Tears. These B@st@rds in Barisan Najis don't care !

For Barisan Najis cronies they have no idea what hard work, blood, sweat, & tears mean, as All their Money and Assets are all ill-gotten and easily robbed off the Rakyat. To Barisan Najis, "work" is a four-letter word they don't, and will never understand !

I think 5bil is hardly enough to shore up the stock market. Most likely this amount will be used to shore up the UMNO related companies just like in 1998. I think this is not an attempt to help support the market but rather an attempt to help UMNO related companies which must be in deep shit again. 5bil is hardly 2% of the market capitalisation. So do you think Najib is stupid? No. We are the stupid one to believe it.

I do not understand the concept that the government can touch EPF without consulting the contributors.. why are these irresponsible people been given such high-end power?

Does it mean that they have all the right to take people's wives as well?

Things aren't look bright at the moment. As such, our government will need to start implementing prudent spending and cost cutting measures whenever possible. For a start, please scrap stupid and wasteful project, such as the annual Monsoon Cup. We can also add more money to the coffer to offset fuel subsidizing by introducing fuel levy for every vehicles entering Malaysia.

MChick - there are pastorial tribes in Africa where a buxom maiden is a highly priced commodity.

Brides to be, go through a fattening phase where they are bulk up much like feedlots in the Mid West cater to cows 2-3 months before going for sale having achieve marketable weight.

Given the opportunity, betcha I can fetch top dollar hawking used goods.

Correction - .....highly priced/prized commodity, both applicable.

Defacto PM and backroom idiots running the office,

Now that chopper deal has been iced, proceed to Plan B. Send an unofficial team down south and go see PM Lee Jr and propose a JV with the best minds Lion City can offer to contribute towards developing/building our own choppers in name of South South coperation(that should placate nonsense fr the ultras)

With alarcrity, get hold of Honda head honcho in M'sia - offer them land FOC and put forth the idea being bantered with S'pore(M'sia alone not credible so make use of S'pore) but make no demands(put aside any 'bumi priority' - they will hire eventually).

Honda has invested most in R&D using composites for a new generation of chasis - tech transfer from both Honda and the best S'pore has to offer must surely outweigh sticky issue of bumi interest ? We are a land with still plentiful resource and we have breached the point where we can no longer afford the wanton waste/corrupt/blatant stealing by UMNO.

For a change Najib Razak, do something positive. If your backroom boys are incapable of meeting challeges ahead, disguise questions to any MT forums and you'll be surprise the many able minds residing in our midst.

Casper,

We have invested into composite technology for some time under a comopany called CTRM. Badly run and ill-conceived with a twin purpose of commercializing the Eagle 2 seater aircraft which was a total failure.

We could use whatever we can salvage from CTRM to give Proton a boost. We have to be careful about maintennace for composite flying craft though as not many of these facilities are available worldwide. Wouldn't do to fly somewhere and not be able to fly out from there. Aluminium aircraft maintenance is still more universally available. Need to keep this in mind.

Also, the future would be carbon nanotubes, which is highly toxic at the moment but fast becoming the next popular durable material for vehicle and aircraft chassis. R & D is a continuing journey of discovery, interspersed with periods of monetizing such R & D and making money in the process.

You can't prop up the price of stocks by injecting RM5 billion into the market unless the total capitalization of our stocks in the KLSE is also RM5 billion. His understanding of financial analysis and portfolio management is very limited.
