PETALING JAYA: Negotiations to purchase 12 Eurocopter helicopters for the RMAF are still on, sources said.

When contacted yesterday, a source said high-level officials of the Defence Ministry had not received any instruction from the Government to cancel the programme.

Another source said no decision had been made on the matter yet.

They were commenting on a news report published on an Internet news portal which claimed that Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak had decided to cancel the purchase of the helicopters.

The Government had recently announced the purchase of 12 Cougar EC725 helicopters from the European firm to replace the ageing Nuris at a cost of RM2.3bil.

Najib had said last week that the Cabinet had given the Public Accounts Committee the green light to investigate the procurement process of the helicopters.

Najib, who is also the former Defence Minister, had suggested that the PAC investigate the matter.

PAC chairman Datuk Azmi Khalid had said that the committee would scrutinise the details leading to the purchase of the new helicopters during a two-day meeting starting tomorrow.

Among those who would be called in to assist the PAC is Defence Ministry secretary-general Datuk Abu Bakar Abdullah.

Dzirhan Mahadzir, a correspondent of Jane’s Defence Weekly, said the helicopter purchase programme was still at the negotiation stage between the Government and Eurocopter after the Letter of Intent (LOI) had been issued.

Dzirhan said the LOI meant that the negotiations would still be subject to pre-conditions before the final selection is made and a Letter of Award (LOA) given later on.

He added that the LOI would enable the Government and the vendor to plan and negotiate the best offer that could be worked out before the LOA is handed over.

“It will be more appropriate if a postponement is announced if the Government finds that it cannot make the deal due to external factors such as the national economic condition.

“But it will be odd if the deal is called off now, because everyone will have to go back to square one and make a new tender. There’s a lot of speculation in the news report about the cancellation if you ask me,” he added.

Not only we will paying double the price for EC725 copter, we are also paying double the price for the procurement of SU-30 MKM fighter jet from Russia compared with the price acquired by Vietnamese government.
The above "paying double the price'is baes on the assumption that there are no mark up prices by the Vietnamese and Brazilian governments for the above procurements. Now the UMNOputras' "appetite" are no more millions but billions of dollars. GOD pls save us poor malaysians!!!!!

Do you think they would let that to happen. . .?

No way they would let that to happen!

There goes our hard-earned money. . . , your money and my money. . .,the rakyaats money. . ., which we toiled day and night to earn it!!!

What is the point. People expose stories of corruption and even when it is proven to be true, there isn't a thing anybody can do to stop it. The Rakyat is completely irrelevant to the people who are in the position of power. They are beyond our justice and continue to do whatever they want without fear of punishment. They'll do the most sickening things in broad daylight, in front of everyone in the country and they would not even flinch. They know the Rakyat are powerless.

It looks like we have won absolutely nothing. We didn't need a strong opposition. We needed a completely new government and for all those who voted for BN, you have done the biggest disservice to Malaysia.

DPM to be PM has his legs sunk in the mud either go forth or withdraw he has
to commit. I am sure he will use up all the means to twist and lie to the ppl.
This is the most hopeless to be PM, by looking at his eyes it shows to be the most effected liar.

To the PR team of MPs, can't anything be done to stop all these nonsence these GOONS are able to do?
Before 308, it can be said that there is only a handful of Opps MPs, now there is what, 82 of you, and still these 'actions' are still happening at their whims and fancies?
Seems that as far as these GOONS are in power there is only 'law of the jungle out there'.
They are 'licenced' to 'rob, kill, detain, deny, change, use, plunder, rape, demand' and the list goes on on on.......!
To our bros and siss RAKYAT out there!
It seems that the only power is in OUR hands, the RAKYAT's, and we will have to slog it out till the NEXT GE 13, only then can WE see the country rid of ALL these MISDEEDS!
May the ALMIGHTY have mercy on us and guide us thru till GE 13, cos' with the current global and local scene, it's gonna be a hard and rough ride!

the clean-cut commission is calculated to be RM1,300 mil.
even if the heli cost RM82 mil each, don't u think that price is suspiciously high too?
malaysia is FCUKED and all those stupid ass*oles who voted bn, they are the useless bastards in our midst who subject the rest of us to a bleak future!

There is currently a tug of war between the previous and the present Defence Ministers. The present one being PM thought he will be the one to sign the Eurocopter deal after the portfolio exchange and that will take care of his retirement plans forever and three generations after that. But the previous Defence Minister signed the deal first, thus hijacking it from the PM, so now the PM very furious and want PAC to expose and possibly derail it so that it can be signed again with him. Damn pathetic.
