(BBC) Iranian Nobel Peace Prize laureate Shirin Ebadi should be allowed to speak at a Malaysian university, Malaysia's foreign minister has reportedly said.

The statement is an apparent U-turn on the part of the Malaysian government.
Two days ago foreign ministry officials advised the university to withdraw the invitation to Ms Ebadi, an outspoken human rights lawyer.

But now Foreign Minister Rais Yatim has told the Star daily he "would like Dr Ebadi to be invited to the forum".
"Malaysia should allow the freedom of expression and criticisms at the highest level. I will go and investigate this matter," he added.

Ms Ebadi, who won the peace prize in 2003, has often found herself at odds with the Iranian government over her human rights work. Her invitation to speak on Islam and cultural diversity at the University of Malaya was withdrawn on the advice of the foreign ministry, reports said.

'Unfortunate'

But Mr Rais described the decision to retract the invitation as "unfortunate". He said that the advice was "not official" and said he had not been consulted.

The speech was supposed to begin a series of talks in Malaysia and Thailand over the next few months.
Other speakers include fellow Nobel laureate President Jose-Ramos Horta of East Timor and American activist Jesse Jackson.
In her capacity as a lawyer, Ms Ebadi has defended many people accused of political and security crimes in Iran, and campaigned for greater rights for women and children.

She has faced numerous death threats and hostility in the Iranian media, and the Iranian government banned her Centre for Protecting Human Rights in 2006.

Who actually is running the foreign ministry in Malaysia? The minister in charge Rais is at a loss as to who retract the invitation right under his nose. That "he had not been consulted" well, what a joke, another flip flop culture at its best. All goverment ministries are run by remote control and the ministers are just figure he***. Suggestion, Rais should be appointed as foreign ministry clerk.

Yes, good show YB Rais Yatim. Let our people hear the views of a Nobel Prize winner on her opinion where Malaysia stands on Human Rights (or absence of it!)
Let the truth be heard; or is the pill too bitter to swallow? YB Rais Yatim, you have the potential to be Nobel Peace Prize nominee yourself. Why don't you set the record right, clear your conscience, follow your heart and start fighting for justice with the correct camp?

I'd regard Rais Yatim as one of the voices of reason in the current cabinet, even if he does attempt to defend the indefensible such as the time of the Hindraf riots.

Rakyat should be given ample opportunity to listen and learn from others who have gone through the trauma of physical and mental abuses; deprivation of human rights, and victimization of various kinds..

By comparing the souls of those who claw back in defiance and to those who choose to bottle up their grievances in fear of being reprimanded....

Looks like our country is run by some foreigners who can dictate who we should invite as speakers. On one hand, we have told Uncle Sam not to interfere with our country administration but we chicken out when some Middle East country not to do so. This Middle East students will protest if during the talk if the speaker is invited. Let us see whether our Botak and Police will arrest them for illegal demo if they do so.

Another U-turn? We keep flipping and flopping, does anyone take Malsysia seriously? I was impressed with Rais when I first heard him speak a long time ago, now he has just degenerated into one of those stately UMNO morons. They swagger around with their pea-sized brains, trying to slay non-existent bogies. They are allergic to the many decent, intelligent Malays so they will always be loud and EMPTY upstairs!

we probably need a foreigner running our foreign ministry, because, the minister himself doesn't know what is going on in his own backyard. What is there to investigate, there are more important issues in this country that needs looking into, i.e the economy, corruption, transparency, ISA etc, etc

Hey, En Rice Hitam , your dept. is still under the influence of the former Minister - YamHead. That is why you have not been consulted by your staff. Head Moron AliBaba controls your dept through remote control!. Expect more unexplained behaviour from your staff!

The fact that is more disturbing here is that the Malaysian UMNO-led government ceded to the requests of Iran, a state sponsor of terrorism, and to their shady citizens who are residing in Malaysia...apparently as "university students".

Perhaps Washington should reconsider the status of Malaysia's UMNO government as an ally. The corruption inherent in Malaysia makes it a perfect breeding ground for terrorist cockroaches, and we have a perfect example now of foreign citizens of a state sponsor of terror demanding the right to dictate who their host country allows in to give a talk.
