PUTRAJAYA (TheStar): A group of Members of Parliament turned up at the Prime Minister’s Office here on Friday to hand over the first batch of signatures in support for a motion to discuss repealing the Internal Security Act (ISA).
The five Pakatan Rakyat members -- Batu Gajah MP Fong Po Kuan and Segambut MP Lim Lip Eng of the DAP, Selayang MP William Leong and Kelana Jaya MP Loh Gwo Burne of PKR, and Kota Raja MP Dr Siti Maria Mahmud of PAS -- arrived at the office around 11.10am.
The signatures were handed over to the Premier’s senior private secretary, Datuk Ahmad Yaakob.
Earlier, Fong called on Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi to be compassionate and release all those currently detained under the ISA.
“Since he will be our PM for not much longer, he should be compassionate and think of the ISA detainees’ family members. Release the five Hindraf members and let them spend Deepavali with their family,” she said.
Fong also said it was wrong to arrest the group of Hindraf (Hindu Rights Action Force) supporters outside the PM’s office on Thursday as they were merely delivering a letter to Abdullah.
“They were just using a platform to voice their grievances,” she said.
So far, a total of 85 MPs -- 81 from the Opposition, a backbencher and three independents -- have signed in support of the motion to discuss repealing the ISA.
