Looking For UMNO’s Next Ex-Leader PDF Print

At a recent gregarious social gathering a colleague, whose luck in personal relationships could best be described as challenged, was teased on whether she was scouting for her next ex-husband!  With the current frenzied UMNO divisional nominating meetings, I am tempted to ask a similar question of its members.  Are they too looking for their next ex-leader?

THE CORRIDORS OF POWER

M. Bakri Musa

If there is any lesson UMNO members should have learned is that the way they pick their leaders needs to be revamped.  By now they should have realized the devastating consequences of the “no contest rule” for the two top positions and the onerous nomination quota system, as well as the equally atrocious track record of any one leader (no matter how seemingly wise and brilliant at the time) in anointing his or her successor.

There are indications that this reality is now gradually sinking in, at least on the brave and perceptive few.  Thus far that is all there is, only a realization, and nothing more.

Shahrir Samad, cabinet minister and UMNO Supreme Council member, called for “a generational change” in his party’s leadership.  He viewed UMNO as becoming overly bureaucratic, with heavy emphasis on seniority and hierarchy.  At age 58, Shahrir considered himself too late and too old to go for a top post.

Whether that is a statement of reality or merely an undisguised expression of lack of confidence on the current generation of leaders is for Shahrir to clarify.  Both Najib Razak and Muhyyidin Yassin, leading candidates for the number one and two slots respectively, are of the same vintage as Shahrir.

If Shahrir was expressing his low opinion of current UMNO leaders, then he is on to something.  There are no jantans among them.  In the current leadership fiasco they have chosen to remain quiet and dutiful until it becomes quite obvious that their leader has become the butt of jokes.  Only then did they finally dare speak up.

Of course there are exceptions but few, and Shahrir is not among them.  The caliber of present UMNO leaders, in the cabinet as well as the party’s Supreme Council, is such that were they to see their leader stark naked, they would more likely compliment him for his nice tan instead of throwing a sarong at the hapless man!

Among the few and ready exceptions are Tengku Razaleigh and Zaid Ibrahim.  The Tengku saw through Abdullah very early on and challenged him for the leadership.  Only the onerous burden of the quota on nominations prevented Ku Li from contesting; the same hurdle that may confront him now.  Zaid Ibrahim remains the only Malaysian minister to have resigned over a matter of principle.

There have been many ministerial resignations in the past, as Abdullah’s dutiful spinmeisters in The New Straits Times pointed out in an attempt to soften the impact of Zaid’s action.  What those media supplicants pointedly failed to differentiate is that all those earlier resignations were essentially forced upon or out of shame.

Incidentally neither the Tengku nor Zaid is on UMNO Supreme Council.  That speaks volume as to the caliber of individuals attracted and voted to the party’s top leadership.

The current frenzy of divisional nominating activities is likened by that keen observer of UMNO politics, Kadir Jasin, to the behaviors of passengers stranded on the freeway by their broken-down chartered bus.  In their desperation, they are less interested in the comfort, safety or reliability of their replacement vehicle, only with reaching their destination on time.  They reason that once they get there they could then leisurely shop for a better and more comfortable substitute for the return trip.  It would never cross their mind that in their haste and less-than-prudent choice now, they could end up in a ditch or worse, before reaching their destination.

Soon after Abdullah assumed power and was searching for a deputy, I suggested that he picked Tengku Razaleigh.  As both are at about the same age it would be unlikely for the Tengku to pose as a potential succession threat.  They would also complement each other in skills and temperament.  Together they could then revamp UMNO so as to attract fresh young new talent and then completely bypass the current crop of ineffective and parochial leaders as represented by Najib, Hishamuddin and Muhyyidin.

Had Abdullah done that his fate today, as well as that of Malaysia, would be far different!  It is still not too late for him to recoup.  As President he could summon a special General Assembly of UMNO specifically to dismantle the nomination quota.  In so doing Abdullah would effectively undo one of Mahathir’s less-than-laudatory legacies.

Abdullah would effectively make the current nominating exercise mute, and simultaneously open up the party elections.  That could prove beneficial especially if his son-in-law were to be unsuccessful in securing his quota of nominations, which now appears increasingly possible.  Abdullah would also then have the great pleasure of watching Najib Razak desperately scrambling to fend off a strong challenge from Tengku Razaleigh.  There is little love lost between Najib and Abdullah, and that single maneuver would be the perfect finale from Abdullah to Najib:  Don’t get mad, get even!

Muhyyidin the Meek

Recently Muhyyidin had been incessantly clamoring for change in UMNO’s top leadership.  Much earlier, as head of the party’s committee tasked with changing its rules, he was forceful in advocating removing the current nomination quota system.  On meeting a not-unexpected resistance from Abdullah, Muhyyidin readily yielded.

Now with the man he is rooting to replace Abdullah slated to win san competition, Muhyyidin has chosen to remain uncharacteristically passive.  He even urged all divisions to unanimously nominate Najib Razak as party president, and only Najib, as a “show of party unity.”  Quite a remarkable and considerable shift in position, and a very quick one at that!  Obviously Muhyyidin is banking on riding Najib’s coattail to the top, and doing so unopposed!  As an aside, someone should now ask him what he thinks of the nomination quota system.

With that tantalizing prospect, Muhyyidin is now pathetically reduced to mouthing sycophantic praises for Najib, claiming, “I have no doubt that I will work very well with Najib ….”  As a preview of the kind of leader he would be, Muhyyidin reassured everyone that he “would not dictate policies.”  Rather as Deputy President, his is “to support and follow whatever directions and visions the president has spelled out.”  In short, a glorified office boy in the highest office of the land!

Muhyyidin does not see a higher responsibility to the party or country; his loyalty is strictly to the president, a latter-day Hang Tuah.  Thankfully thus far he has refrained from dripping his keris with ketchup in defense of Najib.

Muhyyidin was the chief executive (Mentri Besar) of Johor for a decade before Mahathir “promoted” him to the federal level.  In the UMNO scheme of things, a mentri besar is a major “warlord,” certainly more so than a minister, especially for a state like Johore.  Back then he grabbed headlines in a regional publication over his tussle with a foreign developer with substantial holdings in his state.  I believe firmly in the ability of individuals to change, for the better as well for the worse.  My retelling this old story is merely to temper the fast growing enthusiasm for him shown by local commentators.

Najib No “More Bettah!”

Assured of being unopposed for the top slot, Najib wisely chose not to be a part of this emerging attempt at setting up a mutual admiration society with Muhyiddin, declaring that he (Najib) “has not decided if Muhyiddin would be his running mate.”  That is quite a rebuff!  Najib went further and remarked “the more the merrier” when others like the double Muhammad Taib declared their intention to seek the number two position to compete directly with Muhyyidin.

However, when Perlis UMNO Youth leader Ismail Hashim had the temerity to consider competing directly with Najib, he (Najib) abruptly changed his tune, expressing doubt whether Ismail could even muster the necessary nominations.

Najib would like to have the top prize handed to him on a silver platter, as has been the pattern throughout his political career.  To ensure that, Najib expressed his definite lack of enthusiasm for dismantling the current nomination quota rule even though his mentor and champion Tun Mahathir has called for it.  Najib did not rule out doing so eventually, once he is gone

With all his sordid baggage Najib is understandably sacred stiff in getting not only a formidable competitor in Tengku Razaleigh but also insignificant ones like Ismail Hashim.  Najib is scared that Ismail would provide an avenue for protest votes.

Do not expect a change the UMNO’s leadership come March 2009, merely a change of faces.  The insular attitude and feudal mindset behind those familair faces remain the same; likewise the corruption and incompetence.  Unfortunately that would be bad for Malaysia, unless Anwar Ibrahim and his Pakatan Rakayt were to be successful.

Meanwhile enjoy the spectacle of UMNO members now frantically searching for their next ex-leader.  Try not to let your concerns about the future of Malaysia detract you from enjoying the frivolity!

You are dead right. There won't be any changes to UMNO come March 2009. The so called ultra's will continue to dominate the party. They have all the money to do so. Money is power. With the money they had accumulated throughout all these years, they can put any challenger into oblivion by buying up qll their supporters as before. Already this Najib the Najis is calling the tune that he will vouch for Malay supremacy until his last drop of blood.
I APPEAL TO BADAWI TO ARREST NAJIB UNDER THE ISA FOR THIS INSTIGATING REMARK.

Everyone knows that umno is a party that never groom a leader to be the next PM.Look at Racist Mahathir. He sack all his deputies and end up picking AAB and then telling the world that AAB wasn't his choice. To be honest Umno is a dying party becos there are no potential successor that have the brains and experience to lead this nation.See Singapore, they invested in grooming younger generations to be the next leaders of their country while in our country umno groom their younger generation how to rape this country.

Crony capitalism is actively practiced by Umno which uses the guise of the NEP, the so-called Social Contract, and Malay Rights to create Malay Billionaires at the expense of ordinary majority Malays who instead of enjoying the fruits of the NEP are fed by the 'Opiate of Society' as Karl Marx calls it. In the Malaysian context, that 'opiate' is Religion and Malay Special Rights which is constantly fed to the Malay masses every time they feel the pangs of economic hunger. This ensures the continued dominance of Umno, its politicians and its crony capitalist Malay Billionaire businessmen. The non Malay BN politicians also get a share of the spoils by ensuring their political parties such as MCA, MIC, Gerakan, PBB, PBS, LDP, SUPP etc. get the non Malay votes for BN...More http://*********.********.com

How pitiful this UMNO party is at the moment.

Najib's remark in Malaysiakini today, "..... I will defend Malay supremacy till the last drop of my blood....". It is most uncalled for that such a remark will come from the deputy prime minister of a country of multi races. We cannot allow such provocative statements from our leaders, or any individual for that matter. Badawi must make a police report so that Najib will be reprimanded according to the law.

I still strongly believe that the voters should have the right to vote for our PM as well.

At the moment, voters are allowed to vote for the governing party... this is still fine but when it comes to selection of PM, the voters must also cast their vote on this.

The governing party may think that one nominee may do well, but the general public may not.

Before he even become PM he already made a racist remark and a manifesto at that. He's telling us he's not going to be prime minister for ALL Malaysians. He's PM for Malays only. Do you still think we non Malays will give support to BN. Do you think the Non Malays will be patriotic and pay taxes willingly? I wonder why these UMNO Malays are so pathetic, can't they stop using race politics to lead all Malaysians. Is this country all about Malays only? Who pays the most taxes if not the non Malays? Who helped develop this country to what it is? Who helped fight the Japanese and the communist and even Independence from the British?
Most Malaysians do not for one minute believe Najib Razak is suited for the PM post for his proclaimed manifesto not to mention all the allegations surrounding him.

marb13 I agree with you on the vote for prime minister. The vote for this post must be distinct from the vote for head of party. Remember, BN consists of all the component parties. Each and every member must have one vote when come to voting for who is going to be prime minister. This selection process for the specific position of prime minister must be clearly spelt out in the BN constitution. Otherwise, the prime minister will be forever from one component party. Where is the level playing field? We want to see the prime minister to be a Malaysian , rather than a specific type of Malaysian. In the final analysis, if we continue like now, the prime minister is a single race minister, and not a Malaysian minister.

This is precisely what I think about our current pathetic state of affairs in BN. Badawi probably was trying his best but the corrupted warlords were against all reforms. So, for his own survivability, he was probably forced to join the 'pillagers club'. "Old habits die hard". 50 years of leading a happy go lucky, easy loose life, being spoon fed will not die off easily. It's embedded in their genes already.

Charles Reade: “Sow an act, and you reap a habit. Sow a habit, and you reap a character. Sow a character, and you reap a destiny”.

Now you know why we are destined to suffer. BN has to go for "Gene Replacement Therapy" or put them in a "forest monastery" or cave on a "soul searching expedition" to enable them to lead an ascetics life for one month. Than the whole camp can be revamped into many little Gandhi camp, Nelson Mandela camp, RPK camp, Tok Guru Nik Aziz camp, Dr Azly Rahman camp and the like.

Unfortunately, due to "cultural" restraints, the above seems impossible. So they will inevitably be ousted come GE13.

Here is a dialogue from the movie, "On Deadly Grounds", star cast by Steven Siegel(SS).

After whacking the 'shit' out of the Bad Nut(BN)(for bullying a poor Indian in a pub) SS asked him(not the exact phrase but was somewhat like this)

SS: What does it takes to change a man..?
BN: No! No!
SS: Wrong answer.."bedebah,.. bedebuk"
BN: I need time[panting]
SS: ...and so do I!

"Back then he grabbed headlines in a regional publication over his tussle with a foreign developer with substantial holdings in his state."

Could this be the story:

This story was carried out in the magazine Asiaweek a while back.

One day, when Muhyiddin was the Menteri Besar of Johor, he called up Stamford Holdings, a Singapore company which owned more than 4000 acres of land in th state under oil palm cultivation.

Muhyiddin told them to develope 400 acres of the land. He then demanded that Stamford Holdings give him 30% of the development. Stamford Holdings agreed, developed the land, and Muhyiddin got his 30%.

Sometime later, Muhyiddin called up Stamford Holdings again and told them to develope the remaining 4000 acres of land. This time, Muhyiddin wanted a whopping 70% ! Stamford Holdings refused.

A few days later, Muhyiddin called up Stamford Holdings again, and told them, "Look, I have this piece of paper in front of me on my desk. All I have to do is sign it and Stamford Holdings will no longer own the 4000 acres of land. Now, do you agree or not to develope the land and I take 70%."

Stamford Holdings again refused. The following week, they received a letter from the Johor government signed by Muhyiddin stating that the government have taken over the land.

The nationalised land was later divided to three of Muhyiddin's cronies.

Muhyiddin did not dare sue Asiaweek for this report. Asiaweek pre-empted any funny ideas Muhyiddin had by also reporting that all the telephone converations were taped by Stamford Holdings.

Now is this guy going to be successful in attracting foreign investments? Is this guy going to be Malaysia's DPM? Do we deserve him?

There is one thing for sure... Malaysia Politic is a FAMILY BUSINESS Current leaders have realised it long ago and that is why the baton will be changing hand from father to son and later to grand children.

As for the businessman regardless how big or small his/her business is, they have to crack their head in order to progress and on top of that they have to come out with the capital/investment BUT the situation is totally the other wat around for politician. They no need to come out with capital/investment but just by the stroke of the pen they can make RM1.3 billion from Eurocopter deal and so on.

That's the reason for our kids the type of education that they(government)providing is not that high standard on top of that the English/Bahasa Malaysia issue always will be arise and if you guys observe carefully they're the steerer the issue from behind as for thier kids, they know where to send their kids for the first class education. Indirectly they're creating a situation where later there's no competition for their kids to take over from them once they plan to retire. So as I mentioned earlier, the leading post from Father will go to son and then go to their children.

Najib has already fired his first racist salvo on having achieved the required no. of nominations for President of UMNO. And that is, he has vowed to defend Malay rights to the last drop of his blood. How about defending the rights of the Chinese, Kadazan, Indians, etc. also to the last drop of your blood, Najib? Or the rights of these minorities do not need any defending at all. Their rights are yours for your taking and trampling on, right? That is exactly what UMNO means, right?

Let me ask you, Najib, who are you defending Malay rights against? After all, the guns are all in your master race's hands. The PDRM, RELA, Riot squad, Bukit Aman, and even the judiciary are controlled by UMNO. If there are anybody who requires defending, its the rights of the minorities. And will you do that when(if) you become PM. Or are you going to tell the minorities, no, that's the responsibilities of your own political parties who are supposed to represent you. Everybody knows that the minorities political parties are under the thumb of UMNO and are continuously being harassed and bullied by UMNO.

Yes, Najib, this racist statement from you is expected. After all you rose up in UMNO by making racist and ketuanan pledges to your UMNO goons. Yes, racism thrives in bolehland. Thanks to UMNO, who have brainwashed the Malay rakyat.

When there is clamouring for the position of the Capt. of a sinking submarine..err..ship, it doesnt matter who dons the cap. The issue is whether the clamourer is in denial that the ship is sinking or indefiance of the fact (read that depression). The Capt is the Finance Minister! The good Doc had a gentleman's agreement with Pak Lah to take care of the helm but then the son-in-law was in the waiting. The PM designate was at cross roads! The good Doc then makes a crafty move in lamenting he wouldnt support PM designate thereafter. Which was a veiled bugle call for the latter to seize the opportunity! Which he did. The good Doc now has his son in running for the Youth Chief- the dynasty now is neck-to-neck with Pak Lah's. Now lets look at the other side of the coin. There is another ship which has been launched from the dock for water worthiness. It has sailed from ports of Kedah to Penang to Perak to Selangor. It is also capable of docking in Kelantan. This vessel has many Titanic capabilities and virtues. Many aspirants are keen to embark because it has its own think tank and it has the resilience to charter the onslaught of an economic tsunami which is rearing its global path and soon to reach our shores if the current tides are anything to take note in our neighbouring ASEAN region.
5 billion is not going to solve; its only going to salvage. As it did the previous crisis, then under the rule of the former PM. Its a matter of time that the new vessel is going to undergo the constitutional passage and be granted sailing rights. Haste makes waste. When the tsunami finally arrives and the denial and defiance would have proven in its reality, the captains of industry are going to make their thoughts known that they would prefer the new ship to be launched. The new ship wont stall the tsunami nor make it change its path. Its going to weather the rough seas and its ability to ride the waves and charter Malaysia to better managment is going to be transparently seen. This new ship is really not doing different things from the previous ship. In reality, its going to do things differently. That is why it has been welcomed by the rakyat of the 5 states. The media can block their exposure of the previous mates of the (previous) ship; but then, blog is a media too.
Aye aye Capt DSAI.
