MCA party elections will be approaching soon while Umno party elections has come to a white hot stage. Party election news stories are widely reported by all major newspapers everyday. The whole country is under a strong election atmosphere. It seems that everyone is talking about elections, as if all of us have become political critics.
With rumbling sound of chaos everywhere, candidates are busy attending feasts and ribbon-cutting ceremonies. It has become part of the election culture in Malaysia. It is unique and with a reason, people just keep practising it. The stage is the best occasion for candidates to perform. By giving speeches laced with sorrow, racial issues, human rights and reform, some candidates have impressed their audiences with excellent acting and exuberant facial expressions. After the 8 March general election tsunami, BN member parties are reshuffling their structures. There are those who want to get into the field while those outside want to get in.. This is a political norm. But it is very confusing that while some candidates keep telling us that they are "outspoken", how many of them can actually come out with concrete political views? And how many candidates truly care for the country and the people? How many of them are having a global perspective and are capable of leading the country out of the difficulty and face the future? It would be very dangerous if political candidates keep referring the so-called "reform" to are " outspoken". Although being "outspoken" is useful and it is very pleasing, once they have gone too far with it, they may keep playing with racial sentiments and eventually, they win the emotions but lose the country's and the people's future. What kind of election culture are we asking for? This is a very serious problem that should be deliberated by every voter and every political party member. Election means like blackmail, name-calling or playing with racial sentiments are bad and inferior election cultures. As long as such election cultures are still widely practised during party elections, there would be no progress for our demoracy process and our country's democracy would have nothing to be proud of.
