In the wake of recent serial killings and severe discrimination of the Africans by mainly the Malaysians, I wish to advice my fellow Africans who were made to believe that Malaysia is a “humble” destination for foreigners to consider Malaysia as “not a place to go”.

Malaysia appeared to be a country of mixed races namely; the Malays, Indians, and the Chinese. One would expect that there should be high degree of racial tolerance. One would also expect that Africans or foreigners in general should be tolerated under normal circumstances.

We once heard of our own Kofi Annan urging other countries to emulate Malaysia due to her racial harmony. I wish to tell him and all Africans that “she” cannot be our role model.

We should not forget that a country that is racially harmonious must tolerate people from all walks of life. Malaysia is not such a place and this is due to the fact that

  1. Africans are regarded as social misfits

  2. we are not protected by the law and

  3. we don’t have job security

SOCIAL MISFITS

The African has been and continues to be a “nuisance” in the eyes and minds of the citizens of Malaysia, not excluding the police personnel. Do not be astonished if you realize that the moment they see any black color from Africa he or she is perceived to be a criminal. Their conclusion is that all blacks are criminals. This perception was long ago infused in their minds by the media. The media always portray the negative and the deplorable states as well as the conflict zones of Africa. The youth always refer to us as “Negros”.

These very bad remarks ended in the painful death of many Africans in Malaysia. In the recent periods two Nigerians were poisoned in a restaurant, a Yemeni guy lost 3 fingers as he was trying to block a knife that was aimed at his chest, 2 Egyptians were asked by some locals to give whatever they had, when they refused, a fight broke out and all the locals at that area came to fight the Egyptians without knowing the reason!!! Another Egyptian was robbed of RM4000 and beaten up. In Melati Utama, bikers usually rampage the net cafes from time to time with knifes and baseball sticks frightening the people in it and taking whatever they have. These are just very few of the cases.

Let me give you a recent case in Wangsa Maju that has led to the untimely death of an African student from Chad. African undergraduate, HELP University College, Abdel Aziz Hassan Abdraman, 22, (his picture shown above) was brutally murdered just because of his color.

On Saturday, there was a mob attack by some 20 youths wielding metal rods, sticks and knives on 10 African undergraduates in Wangsa Maju which resulted in his death and injured the rest. They were unjustly harassed and mocked by the youths for four consecutive days before the attack. The youths even went up to their Tar Villa apartment and demanded money and cigarettes.

According to the students and as reported by the Malaysian Newspaper “Malay Mail” the drama unfolded when three undergraduates were on their way to board the LRT to perform “terawih” prayers (long prayers by the Muslims after they have broken their fasting) at a nearby mosque at 8.30pm.

They were confronted by some 20 youths who were believed to have hurled abuses at them (they called them Negros) and demanded money.

When the trio ignored them and walked away, the youths, carrying switch blades, pursued them and struck one of them on the head.

The students took refuge at the LRT (Train Station) and sought assistance from their African friends living nearby.

Seven of their friends, including Abdel Aziz, went to their aid and together they went back to where the trio was attacked.

Abdel Aziz’s cousin, Abdraman Moussa Mohamat, 23, said: “We asked the youths who were seated at the stalls why they had attacked our friends but they came for us suddenly without saying a word.

“We ran for our lives when they began swinging metal rods, sticks and knives at us. In the fracas, Abdel Aziz was stabbed from the back.”

POLICE CONFIRMATION

The police confirmed that the victims had been regularly ridiculed by the youths who expressed their displeasure at the increasing presence of Africans in the neighbourhood.

BUT WHAT WAS THE REACTION OF THE POLICE?

Sentul district police Chief Assistant Commissioner Zakaria Pagan told Malay Mail that initial investigations revealed that the attack stemmed from the uneasiness of the residents over the behavior (increasing number of students) of the Africans.

Therefore: “We believe the youths who attacked the Africans wanted to teach them a lesson to behave themselves in public.”

TAXI DRIVERS?

All the taxi drivers categorically refused to pick up the boy when he was injured. Within 15 minutes all the taxis DROVE AWAY without even stopping. It was not a surprise since they always don’t want to pick up blacks. You may be at a taxi station waiting hours while there are taxis available but will refuse to go just because you are a black man.

It is clear in all material respects that Africans are treated like animals and must not live together with “them” in the society. Discrimination we acknowledge is everywhere but not to this extent. I remember the very first time I arrived in Malaysia, right at the airport people distanced themselves far away from me as I approached them. I could not ask anyone for direction. It was a foreigner who rescued me. In the classroom, Malaysians sit far away from us unless they have no choice. Lecturers themselves who were supposed to be agents of change follow suit when marking our papers. We work very hard to achieve excellent results and they try very hard to making sure that we land in futility. They do not want us to outcompete the local students. We thank God, despite all odds we do emerge as the best of all in all.

INSECURITY

The security system in Malaysia is well designed and perfectly carved to protect the Malays. We foreigners have no security. Anytime we have a dispute it always goes against us. Any case reported to the police is discarded if the Malaysian is found to be guilty. “We believe the youths who attacked the Africans wanted to teach them a lesson to behave themselves in public.”
You teach us a lesson by killing us? The police records will prove that about 99% of the reported cases were initiated by the Malays. Many were arrested for a crime they did not commit. The only misbehavior as they claim is that we blacks talk loudly thus disturbing them. Therefore, as the number of students increases they feel uneasy.

I urge all prospective students who wish to study here to reconsider their decisions. Malaysia is not a suitable atmosphere for education due to intense discrimination and insecurity. It has the entire physical infrastructure needed to facilitate learning but the student’s mind is constantly occupied by security concerns. Almost every month, if not a week, a student must die like an animal without any concern by the government of Malaysia. The worse of it all is that the African embassies in all these cases are mute. We did not know before we stepped in. Now you know, make a wise decision. Our lives do not worth anything in the face of their security personnel. Some of us may not see our families and loved ones in the years to come if still in Malaysia. Some dropped their studies prematurely and went away just to feel secured.

JOB INSECURITY

Those who came here in the name of job and went back home within some days will bear us witness. It is very difficult to secure a job. Once you are through you could be dismissed anytime without notice. They don’t just trust foreign workers. Jobs that they consider as demanding, dirty, risky, and dangerous to their lives were those given to foreigners. Examples are working in the petrol shell, shopping malls etc. Just this month, the government came out with a decision to have a zero percent of foreign workers in these areas. Hence, the companies in the mentioned areas were told to terminate the contracts of all foreign workers since the Malaysians are now ready to work. On top of that, all foreign companies in Malaysia are now required to employ only locals with narrow space for the foreigner.

In fact students here face difficulties in getting companies for their industrial training, not because of our academic inability. We have the potential. We usually turned back to our nations if affordable for the training. Masters and PhD students in most cases have no choice than to teach in the primary and Junior high schools. The lucky ones may get senior high schools which otherwise they will not have accepted if at home. Exceptional cases may lead some of them to university level.

In a nutshell, let us not again risk our lives to travel all the way from Africa to Malaysia for education or in search of jobs. Let us stay where our dignity is respected, where our minds find rest, and where our blood will not be shed just because of our color. LET’S LOVE OUR HOME COUNTRY AND WORK TOWARDS MAKING IT A BETTER DESTINATION AS IT HAS ALWAYS BEEN. STAY IN AFRICA. FOREIGN AFRICAN STUDENTS AND SCHOLARS SHOULD GO BACK TO AFRICA AFTER STUDIES TO SHARE THEIR TALENT.

hey. you're a foreigner. what are you complaining about? many non-Malay Malaysians get the same treatment as well. heck, even some law-abiding Muslims get thrown into jail for no good reason.

this "culture" is not the fault of most Malaysians. the blame is the credit of the current BN government.

qarsumi ! my hearts with you. your writing speaks volumes of the your expressions and fervence to see your Country well into development and integrity of service as a citizen .

Kofi Annans , comments were just out of an irrational exuberance , maybe as he was standing next to our former despot TDM ---the same happened when Kevin Rudd expressed in ways even an ordinary citizen of Africa knows better-- but not people in Power . I dont blame Kofi!--- i m sure you also know now that Africa is a better place than all the misinformation that you hear about being Truly Asia here.

Africa has produced great, footballers ,athletes, Statesman , UN Sec Gen(Kofi and Boutros ) and an Immortal Mandela. We in Malaysia are yet to understand all this ! The Leaders hear think Statesman are produced from the Corridors of Power that don't have pillars of integrity and conviction. The same goes to the Law Enforcement and the Judiciary.

My dear Quasumi, A day will come soon when the same types of goons who destroyed your families and friends -- the hoodlums who are well fed by our govt and who roam the streets ---- will come on scholarships to Africa. I hope you will teach them what they miss here dearly.
The good are totally shackled here in Malaysia!! God Bless you !!

God Bless Africa!!! I wish you would bring your family one day when we have cleaned up this Land of all these Racists my friend !!. We will hold you with our hearts!

Qarsumi,

It is not you alone who is facing this dilemma and fear. Even the indonesians and Philipinos are harassed on a daily basis. I truly understand your sentiment now, but in reality, Malaysia is a great place to be and we are now rising up to a new era and hopefully a new government would take over.

Our present government is the least to be emulated by anyone country in the world. On the surface it appears to be multi-racial, but those not considered bumiputra (Prince of the earth)always gets the short end of the stick. I'm sure you know what I mean.

That's why we have to fight and work harder than ever. We competed on our own merit and they competed on privileges.

If ever you have the opportunity to be housed during your studies with the locals, just like how they do it in the UK during the 70's and 80's, you will better understand how our society reacts to such incidents.

And we do condemn such cases as you can see for yourself. Irrespective of what races they are.

My only advise to you is for you to put a strong letter to your embassy asking for their assistance to ensure that our police act according to the process of law to bring all those criminals to justice.

How can africans, pendatang berbaru, be treated as equal. The chinese & injian who have been here is less equal than the malays. Even among bumiputra, some are have more rights than the others, Peninsular malays are supposed to be superior to Sahaban malays, and Sarawak malays are supposed to be more backward than Peninsular malays.

Umno malays are superior to all other malays. Similiarly, in Peninsular malaysia, Bugis malays are supposed to be superior to Javanese malays.
Sunni muslim malays are supposed to be superior to Shite believeing malays.
Sunni malays believe Shite, Islamali, Ahmadiya malays are deviationist malays & inferior.

So, african, stay in Africa and don't disturb our peace. We have enough problems ourselves.

To All Africans,

I cannot apologize on behalf of my fellow rakyat as I am no position to do so. However, lets just clarify one point i.e. Malaysia's official religion is Islam. But the muslims here are a class above all other muslims. Don't ask me why, its a case study for those students of Islam brave enough to take it up for their thesis in their post-graduate studies.

So be warned that though our country's official religion is Islam, it does not mean that African muslims would find Malaysia a safe haven.

It is sad to read this article and we cant apologize enough for the terrible behaviour of our people, the bulf of whom are ignorant an prejudiced.
One or two of the posts above also reflect this terrible mentality.
Having said that, there are bad Malays,Malaysians or whatever and there are 'bad' Africans as well.
Unfortunately, the good law abiding Africans,do not hit the headlines and do not have many interactions with the average Malaysian.

I dont come across Africans very often. The only time I came across them was a couple of guys who I offered my help to because they seem to be having some difficulty in convincing a local lady to take them to the local UN office.
In next to no time, they were telling me they had MILLIONS of Dollars back in their hotel room and bla bla bla......and wanted me to accompany them in MY CAR to the UN office....
Then there are the Africans who accosted me to sell fake watches.

Then my daughter telling me how some Africans in her college(Lim Kok Wing) were pushing themselves on the female students.

Sad but its true, when Africans or non Africans behave themselves, they dont get a report in the papers and whatever is reported is read by the locals so when they read so many reports of Africans misbehaving, they feel like taking the law unto themselves.
These are cowards and they are looking to create mischief themselves because they know the African will not have many people who will come to their help and they know the law enforcement people are themselves prejudiced.

Whatever,I still feel bad about it all.

Instead of just criticizing Malaysians, Africans should stop and think why do they have a negative image and try to correct it.

My great sympathy to you and your fellow men, having taken all the trouble to come here, and to endure all those discrminition and huliliation. We are indeed ashamed of our police force. Most Malaysians have lost any respect for them for a long time.

What you have experienced is the results of years of racist indoctrination by the government. Even the non-Malay citizens here are discriminated as a matter of goverment policies and by MAlay (UMNO) leaders what's more for a foreigner like you.

This same government has the cheek to declare proudly to the outside world that Malaysia is a model of racial harmony, this has been a blatant lie !!. It really makes one puke at their falsehood.

Yes, you did the right thing to high light this to your country, please also make it known to the whole Africa and even to the wholeworld, to warning your leaders and all leaders, so that when our utterly stupid leaders boast one more time that Malaysia is a model of racial harmony, every leaders in the world or any one will smack them right in their face !!

It is sad and painful to read this article that highlight the senseless killings, beating and robberies suffered by the foreigners who come here trying to seek a better life. This is not new in Malaysia, it has been going on for many many years even from the times of our grandfathers.

Once, a man went to see a doctor and said, Doctor, Doctor, I hurt all over.

What do you mean? asked the doctor.

"I feel pain where ever I touch." replied the man and began demonstrating what he meant.

He touched his head and said i feel pain when i do this.
He touched his knee and said I feel pain when i do this,
He touched his chest and said I feel pain when i do this.

The wise doctor paused for a moment and then replies, friend, you have a broken hand.

This is exactly the problem faced by the malays in this country.

They feel offended by every other race that are here.
They feel that their rice bowl is being threatened by others encroaching into their land, taking away their opportunities.

They wonder why other races don't show them the respect they crave for as kings of the land, not realizing that respect has to be earned and not demanded.

They complain that life is hard, not wanting to acknowledge that they have to WORK to earn a decent living.

They are hurt by every little perceived "offense" that they seem to find every where, and their battle cry "BALIK KE NEGARA ASAL KAMU" when they have no intelligent answer to the legitimate complaints of the other races in Malaysia.

In Short, they do not realize that THE PROBLEM BEGINS WITH THEM.

There are malays who have realized their dilemma and are changing their attitudes, but these are few and they are ostracized by their own race for being daring enough to change for the better.

Is there Hope for Malaysia?
Yes there is. It begins now, with each and every one who calls themselves Malaysian regardless of race.

May we step out of our own comfort zones and take a little time to help educate those still in the dark on what is really wrong with the country.

May we be brave enough to allow our children to play with those of other races and teach them to respect ALL peoples as equals. thus laying the foundation for a truly integrated "BANGSA MALAYSIA" for the future generations.

May we be brave enough to stand up against evil, corrupt and murderous politicians who actively provoke racial disharmony in order to stay in power and enrich themselves.

May we realize that there is more than enough wealth for EVERYONE in Malaysia and that the wealth of the country is its PEOPLE and not its material. Just look at Singapore for a very clear example of this truth.

May we all be able to one day say
Malaysia, O Malaysia, Land of beauty and riches.
Happy are those who can call you HOME.

I am so ashamed reading this as a Malaysian and even a Malay. It is embarrassing that the writer, also Muslim has so far faced humiliation by ill bred Malays that from his writing the Malays are not regarded as Muslim brothers.Although I am a Malay, I do acknowledge the disgusting superior attitudes of Malay youths who think they are above everyone else(only when they're in large numbers', even overseas many Malay students berlagak and tend to stick within their own Malay groups or 'usrahs' brainwashing each other about 'defending Malay and Islam' that they even do not mix with international Muslims). As a Wangsa Maju resident, I also clarify that there are many MALAY gangsters loafing around Wangsa Maju, robbing people and even sexually harassing people.I myself have been harassed by such Malay groups when I am using the LRT alone but was lucky enough not to robbed or physically intimidated probably because of my skin colour,if I am Chinese or Indian, seriously, I'd probably have a big scar already. It is incredible that such murder occurs within sight of the Wangsa Maju police station which is within walking distance of the Wangsa Maju LRT station. The incompetent Police Diraja Malaysia has so far as my memory could recall failed miserably to curb gangsterism and crime in Wangsa Maju. The failure to protect the Africans is also a failure by the PDRM to protect Malaysians.Shame on the Malaysians and taxi drivers who did not bother to help. This is not about the fact that the gangsters were Malays, yes unfortunately it's Malay gangsters who had to shed the blood, the LRT station is also within a Chinese area with so many people who have cars who can drive to the hospital, the fact that no Malay or Chinese ,Indian or Iban or whatever Malaysians did not help these poor Africans to go the hospital is a GREAT EMBARRASSMENT to all of us.

Hi QARSUMI,
I am referring to your expression on social misfits. You mentioned that 3 of your nationals were harresed by about 20 local youths and 1 of them was being strucked on his head which I presummed was not fatal at all. Otherwise, the immediate action is to send him/her to hospital. Instead, they gathered at the LRT and regrouped with 10 people including the 3 being harresed and went for a confrontation with the local youths.

Qarsumi, I am not commenting in the defence of the locals. Don't you think that the rightful thing for the 3 to do is to make a police report to avoid any untoward incident? The police might not favour you as you've mentioned but further bodily harm would be reduced extremely. On this part, the Africans are to be blamed for the consequences. Why the confrontation? Do you think that with 10 burly and big sized Africans could scare away the local 20 or more? And, when they retaliate with whatever weapons they can get hold on, then you cried foul.

Qarsumi, I do not condone our locals' action. You just can't paint Malaysians all black due to just a bunch of inconsiderate locals. Even in your African continents this kind of confrontation would result in the same manner least you talk about being in a foreign land.

Leaders make and shape societies. Malaysia is a blessed country and for years racial discimination is a non issue. But when leadership started to operate on racial rather than meritocracy modus operandi, the result is racial intolerance what more with black Africans who are perceived so negatively with all those Nigerian swindle cases... I have personally met and made friends with Africans. My Aussie friend has even adopted 2 children from Ethiopia and love them to the bones. Best is to go to churches in Malaysia and let them provide you the safety net and caring part and help you settle in. There are African churches around which I heard are truly fantastic!

Dear Qarsumi,
In an environment where there is a hunger for scapegoats, as a result of the mainstream racist indoctrination, economic apartheid and religious bigotry that targets even its own citizens, such a predicament is to be expected .....
The odds will be stacked against you from day 1, in the "social image" department!
I would however reserve my comments on the "academic victimisation" and self-assessment that you have come up with, unless you can prove it beyond doubt.

While I empathize with the predicament of many a sincere African student, I cannot bring myself to unequivocally condemn the Rempits and their ilk (although their conduct is despicable), or other "persecutors of Africans in Malaysia".
And if true, the conduct of the Police in dismissing cases cannot be defended.

I have known African (Nigerian/ Kenyan/ South African) students in my student days. One particular Nigerian from Lagos, was among my best friends (a 6-footer, mean looking, but real cool guy & a joker ....) - but even he faced lots of prejudice before we got to know him well. His humility and conduct though, won us over. Never again was he subjected too such nonsense ...

There are what one might call "misfits" who chose to disregard local social norms with the image of "blacks with an attitude".
They as a whole have not strived to understand the social norms in order to fit in, nor have they exhibited any virtue of humility in their conduct.
To make matters worse, many have made a name for themselves in scams, con jobs and other illegal activities. (Till today, I receive numerous spam emails seeking victims, which when traced, goes back to Africa).
These individuals/groups have definitely "blackened" the image of those you refer to as "blacks".
This I feel is the problem with the "African image" in Malaysia.

Having this less than savoury image, you are definitely bound to be faced with prejudice - which in the Racist Malaysian landscape, is to be expected.
Together with your "foreigner" status, small numbers and poor assimilation to social norms - you're sitting ducks to prejudice and victimisation.

Take heart though, that you're not alone in your predicament - many Malaysians are themselves faced with the same with the politicians, police, academia or society in general.
These things are much regretted by all right thinking Malaysians - and we're working towards changing things through the awakening of the conscience.

For thought..

The Rabbi asked his students: “How can we determine the hour of dawn, when the night ends and the day begins?”
One of the rabbi’s students suggested: “When from a distance you can distinguish between a dog and a sheep?”
“No,” was the answer of the rabbi.
“Is it when one can distinguish between a fig tree and a grapevine?” asked a second student.
“No,” the rabbi said.
“Please tell us the answer, then,” said the students.

“It is, then” said the wise teacher, “when you can look into the face of another human being and you have enough light (in you)to recognize your brother or your sister. Until then it is night, and darkness is still with us.”

Dear Qarsumi,

Thank you for speaking up. Your writting forced me not to look away but to admit that I know so little about Africans and have not even given any thought about their difficulty in Malaysia.

On Wednesday, when I was in PJ Session Court to support RPK, a student from Botswana was there to lend support too.

Dear Qarsumi, I am sorry about your broken dreams in Malaysia and hope that your remaining days in Malaysia will be safe.

Bwana,
My condolences to the bereaved family.
Many of the African countries have records a lot worse than Malaysia.
In the midst of sufferings and hunger, people fight to further their selfish and foolish causes.
When you come here as our guest, behave like one.
God willing you will be ok.
Otherwise some Malysians can be a lot worse than your brethren in Africa.

Mr Qarsumi, before you came to Malaysia you should have known that Malay Muslims esp those involved in politics and/or have political connections are a "superior" race in Malaysia. Sorry that you've have learned a bitter lesson. Not too late to walk before they make you run. An old man like me is already waiting for the coffin cover to close on me. Even the jail does not welcome me. Once again, sorry... smilies/sad.gif smilies/sad.gif smilies/sad.gif

Of course, it is well-know even amongst non-Malay Malaysians that our country's master race practises racism and discrimination openly, and they proudly proclaim that it their right to do so.

Yes, we now openly admit what you say has truth in it.

It is such a shame, isn't it? Malaysian delegates, usually Malay government officials, would enjoy free trips and allowances overseas, bringing along their entire family all free of charge and given tons of money for shopping spree, to various international conferences and there, they would trumpet loudly and unshamedly about Malaysia as a haven of harmony, with no problems whatsoever, very progressive, a model Islamic country, freedom everywhere, equipped with the latest technology, has the highest towers in the world, very open-minded and friendly people, great religious freedom, bottomless wealth, plenty of opportunity, producing its own car and welcome all foreigners! IN FACT, THEY PROCLAIMED, MALAYSIA IS NOT ONLY THE BEST COUNTRY IN THE WORLD, BUT ALSO EVERYTHING IS SO ALRIGHT WITH NO PROBLEMS LIKE OTHER DEVELOPED OR ADVANCED COUNTRIES AND SO WONDERFUL THAT IT IS A MODEL FOR THE WHOLE WORLD!

Such is the unshameful attitude of these arrogant, corrupted, ignorant, parasitic, and useless bloodsucking and screwed gomen servants.

In reality, Malaysia is the total opposite - filled with racial discrimination, Malay supremist idealogy and practices in every aspect of life, most unwelcoming to other races and foreigners, including their own non-Malay populations (so what more if you are a foreigner), with no technology of their (even the Twin Towers are built by foreigners and the Malaysian car is from Japan), even the Malaysian flag is a copy of the US flag, full of religious intolerance and forced conversion, with no laws for the rich and powerful Malays, but other population subject to repressive laws, where business is not about hard work but hard connection to the powerful Malay politicians, backward and poor educational system and standard, and everything is control and decide by only one race, and if there is any opposition, the people will be put under ISA, etc.

STILL WANT OT COME TO MALAYSIA AND BELIEVE THE WORDS OF BY THE GOMEN??
