Malaysia's ruling party, UMNO, made a bid to reinvent itself this week, as Prime Minister Abdullah Badawi announced his intention to resign in March. Party leaders apparently hope that removing their unpopular leader -- who led UMNO to a dismal election performance earlier this year -- will boost popularity and help unify the party.

UMNO's problems are greater than Mr. Abdullah, however. After being in power for more than 50 years, the party hasn't been able to deliver the reform voters want. Efforts to tackle corruption and reform the judiciary have stalled. The party too often relies on racial preferences and fear to maintain its grip on power.

Mr. Abdullah promised Wednesday that before he leaves office he will pass an anticorruption bill and establish an independent Judicial Appointments Commission. There's a lot more he could do, starting with repeal of the Internal Security Act, which allows indefinite detentions without trial. A prominent antigovernment blogger, Raja Petra Kamarudin, was recently arrested under the ISA; he remains in jail.

But the biggest service Mr. Abdullah could perform for his country is to ensure that the democratic process works. On Monday, Parliament will reconvene for the first time since opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim was elected as an MP. Mr. Anwar has said he will use his seat to unseat UMNO and push broad-based reform. UMNO needs to show that it welcomes this challenge and take the opportunity to engage the opposition in policy debate. What happens next week will say a lot about how much UMNO is really willing to change.

Dear PM,

I am sad, joyful, perplex, amused, confused and fuk up at the same time when you announced your impending resignation. Why? Let me explain.

Joyful because you are no more PM

Perplex because you said you are going to finish what you promise 5 years ago in 5 months.

Amused because you are such a good liar. The election, your marriage and so many other things reported in the past floods my mind.

Confused because you are giving such an important position of PM to another incompetent leader who used to wave a keris and shouting obscenities at the other races. If the Chinese are not civilised, a civil war would have erupted then.

Fuk up because everything will be worse off in the days to come.

Please can someone tell me what is wrong! Is it because the PM post should only be chosen from UMNO and not BN?

He was the cannon that malfunctioned. Too many misfires because the barrel was crooked just like the sword. Anyone else within UMNO taking over the premiership will still be hard press to change a mindset that has been in existence for more than 4 decades. Same strategies, different delivery, that's all we are seeing on the surface. The changing of the "old guards" must follow. And we know who they are.

"Respect us first, not we you". This is a typical behaviour of an arrogant warlord from the ruling party who is destined to become the next PM. And he called himself a leader of the rakyat and expect the rakyat to be subservient to him! He has to be reminded that the majority of the rakyat are not the one who elect him to be the next PM. It is the undemocratic process of the ruling party and the collusion in BN that put him into that position. Every human being is created equal. No one can demand respect from another just because he claims to be a leader. Furthermore he has to determine whether he is a leader of his party or the rakyat of this nation? If he wants to be a leader of the rakyat, then he has to prove himself worthy of that leadership role and demonstrate the right leadership behaviour to earn the respect from the rakyat. Stop behaving like a greedy and power crazy warlord and demand respect from others. Show the proper statemanship and treat all citizens with equality, fairness, compassion, human liberty and dignity. Show the rakyat the wisdom and integrity to rule the nation. Then respect will come to you from the hearts of the rakyat.

By a twist of fate, a narrow tunnel appeared for Anwar and enable him to be present at this Monday's Parliament session as an Opposition leader.
If Mahatir did not 'sack' him, UMNO need not change clothes.
Come Monday, perhaps we will see Malaysia New Clothes.

That's great. Now you can take on the role of an advisor or sleeping director in a GLC and get instantly 30% shares. Enjoy all the perks of a directorship with house allowances, chauffer driven, company car, first class travels (your wife also), entertainment expenses, etc. After all, this is what the NEP is all about.

And if you can't turn around an ailing company within 2 years, the government will bail you out or remove you and still compensate you for your hard work. Paying you back the 30% you never had. And of course way above market rates.

Forget about majoring in social politics, forget about taking up social economics. The trend now is social UMNOcomics studies.

And if you go for doctorate, you will major in UMNOcronies and be titled a BeNepologist.

So, don't worry. Your future is stone casted.

Too right. The problem is not only Abdullah but the whole Umno gang of thieves. No different with Najib at the helm. Look at those who are vying for the VP job. None of them are clean. Just a bunch of very experienced thieves and robbers who have been tainted by corruption and racism. The best thing we can do is to dump them into the dustbin of history ASAP. Not doing so is like inviting criminals to look after our bank account.

UMNO is a bodek-bodek party. All members realise now that Najib-Muhyudin combination is inevitable and some start to beg for favours. Mukhriz is singing in favour of the perfect combination of N-H departing from his father's disappointmrnt with Najib. Muhyudin wants members to give 100% support to Najib expecting Najib to get members to do the same to him. In coming days the bodek-bodek singing will become more audible with the loudest getting special position in the cabinet and ministries.

It's all power, politics and MONEY. Position means getting closer to the state coffers. They are free to design projects and purchasers that lend hefty sum in their pockets. It is a circle that spins relentlessly.
