(The Star) The “kidnapping” of people by certain governments and denying them trial will be among the highlights of the Lawasia Conference here on Oct 29.
Bar Council organising committee chairman for Lawasia Christopher Leong said removing people from Pakistan to Guantanamo Bay (by the United States of suspected terrorists) was an example of citizens being kidnapped and kept in prison for years. “Removing citizens from their countries covertly in breach of international law is more draconian than the Internal Security Act. “It is worse when they detain citizens of another country illegally and deny them access to justice,” he said when announcing details of the first annual Lawasia Conference. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi is expected to open the conference where the Raja Muda of Perak Raja Dr Nazrin Shah would deliver a paper at the plenary session. Another highlight of the conference will be former Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Zaid Ibrahim who will present a paper “Malaysia: A Democracy Lost?” For details call 03 2031 3003.
