The Malaysian Insider Commentary

For once, there was no flip, there was no flop. No flap even as Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi today stuck to his widely-expected decision to not defend his Umno presidency and step down as Prime Minister next March.

There was some speculation that he might chance it and go for broke to carry out his earlier transition plan until June 2010.

That plan had been torn to pieces by the Umno Supreme council two weeks ago but the 68-year-old premier had already been a dead man walking from exactly seven months ago when the Barisan Nasional lost five states and its customary two-thirds parliamentary majority to a resurgent opposition under Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

The loss exacerbated a sharpening of knives against the politician known as the "Mr Nice Guy" of Malaysian politics, led by his predecessor Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and followed by Umno politicians hungry for power and position.

"I know I've not been doing well, it's time for someone else to take over," Abdullah said, bringing down the curtain on a career spanning 45 years in public service, first as a civil servant, then as a politician and ultimately as prime minister.

Widely criticised by all quarters for a laundry list of reasons - internally by Umno politicians against reforms in governance and externally for not fulfilling such promises - Abdullah has seen his approval rating zig zag between the high 70s and the low 40s, epitomising his lack-lustre leadership that earned him the sobriquet "Flip Flop".

His indecisiveness had always been based on a need for consensus, unity and harmony that was borne from helping to administer the country after the May 13 riots. "I never want to see that again," Abdullah told reporters several years ago.

He followed the same theme today, saying "I have always been guided by my conscience. I do not want a divided party and governing coalition but one that is united. This is not the time for infighting."

The electoral debacle and threats by Anwar to topple BN and capture Putrajaya took its toll on Abdullah and his ruling coalition with the tiny Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP) openly saying it had no confidence in Abdullah's leadership and walked out of the ruling Barisan Nasional coalition last month.

A few other parties gave notice of dissatisfaction not so much with him but with other Umno leaders for racist rants but stopped short of leaving. Abdullah feebly chastised his party which further split the party.

With that in mind and taking the blame and being blamed for the humiliating loss, Abdullah decided to quit to give both the party and coalition a fighting chance for the next polls and to prevent a split and infighting for the leadership.

What was left unsaid was that a majority of Umno supreme council members were united in getting him to go but only split about a succession plan among themselves. They had engineered meetings to convince Pak Lah he was wildly unpopular for not keeping his promises.

But the perception on the ground pointed to the party losing support even among its core Malay constituencies, apart from the Chinese and Indians, for a raft of other reasons, particularly to do with price hikes in food and fuel.

For the next six months, Abdullah will not have to worry about such perceptions. Starting today without flip-flopping about his decision to retire from active politics, he can forge ahead to carry out the reforms without thinking of the political cost within the party.

And even if that fails with a lack of support from within Umno, the man known as "Mr Nice Guy" would at least leave behind a party united - against his efforts.

He can flip-flop with Umno or BN but he can't and shouldn't do that to the rakyat who placed so much faith and hope in his words as the PM. He has betrayed them time and again (and still continuing). Had he done something for the rakyat, today they would have stood solidly behind him and even Umno couldn't touch him. Too bad. He is NOT a Mr. Nice Guy as far as the rakyat are concerned. Did he do something nice and proper for the rakyat. No!

The "LALLANG" PM quits at last ... bending over backwards when he meets strong opposition ... from his own party ... and bullying and OPPRESSING the weak with ISA ... those who can do nothing against his authority, like RPK, and the rest of the ISA detainees ... this will be his defining trademark - a PENGECUT PM !!

You want to get the reforms done and redeem yourself, you sorry excuse for a man, Bodohwi ?? Set ALL ISA detainees FREE and REPEAL the ISA, immediately !!

Is Pak Lah going to spend the next 5 months reforming, or is he going to spend the time getting more dirty contracts signed up for his relatives and cronies and destroy all his corruption evidences? smilies/wink.gif

Pak Lah going? I can imagine Malaysia without PakLah. What a loss for the country.
I want to make a monument as a memory for his contribution for this country. Sleeping Badawi monument may suit best.

My main grouse, apart from his politics, is that he has done nothing for Penang, his home state(and mine). In fact, even though he continues as PM, he has withheld funds to develop Penang.

Good riddance to b_d rub.....

What a lame duck. Even the way he leaves without a whimper is such a let down. But the what did we expect?

Mahathir is to be blamed for unleashing him on us. Now we can blame Abdullah for doing the same with Najib. Is this country cursed?

Dear loosecanon,
This country is not cursed but Amno is. After all these years of corruption and wickedness little wonder it should be and continue it will be.

UMNO United Against Pak Lah?
You must be kidding, the whole NATION is against him (or his SIL)!

But guys, not a good cause for celebration, bcos the worse is in line to be the next president of UMNO! (hopefully not PM, as God Willing PR will take over as government)
This is indeed a great punishment for all of us Malaysians, for being passive, easily contented, materialistic...etc.

So its time for us to stand up against such devils & evils. Let us all unite and do something together, like HARTAL to FREE RPK!

United ? not surprised ---- its the barometer of how much Paklah in all his holiness given to these cronies the crisp contracts . The writing is on the wall -- it they don't support this imbecile --- the progress payments will halt !!!!! What is his worth , not that najib is of any value then a stinking ameoba-- that they hold on to power as Rome burned to cinder.

Rest well in Perth, or the Caymans Pak Lah! also look out for flashing lights on the horizon --- you can run but cannot hide .

let's hope the final 6 months he proves to be most effective for history to remember him favourably. Working for the country and not the party. Hopefully he can bring the most restoration in the shortest time to the judiciary and reforms that he pledged to do so as per his conscience. Otherwise even his conscience is of no value to himself.

my worries is not about abdullah... it is about najib... the most corrupted minister in malaysia.

malaysia future is in dark horizon once Najib took over from Abdullah. Malaysia will be ruled as monarchy. The power will be pass from generation to generation between Dr M cland & najib' clan. Why Dr. M insisted Najib to take over is becoz Dr M owe to Tun Abudul Razak and also as a plot where the post of PM will be pass down to his & najib's children, follow by grand children and grand grand children and so on.

If any of you do not want this to happen, dont ever ever vote for BN. The only way to end this monarchy. For the rest of the rakyat M'sia who are not bumis, just be prepared. bad things is going to come soon by next year.

On the other hand, why the govt take over by PKR is not happening. What has happen and it had been silenced till today. Come on, ppl... do something!
