THE AGE

Delmonico's, near Wall Street, is a bit like 'The Restaurant at the End of the Universe' in Douglas Adams' book of the same name. Get a window seat there right now and you can watch the universe end while you await your steak. But if you fancy tamer fare then try a restaurant in Kuala Lumpur. Get a window seat there now and you'll be entertained by the end of the Malaysian Government.

The death throes of Prime Minister Abdullah Badawi's Government are fascinating. Like someone who cannot swim but who has just been thrown overboard, Abdullah is grabbing at anything to try to save himself. So far, he's gone for that developing-world tool of choice: jailing dissenters. That's a pity because these days Malaysians are more sophisticated than that.

In the past few weeks, an Opposition politician has been arrested under Malaysia's outdated Internal Security Act, which allows for detention without trial, legal counsel, the right to defend yourself in court, or the presumption of innocence until proven guilty.

The politician, who is ethnically Chinese, was detained for inciting religious and racial tension. Apparently she complained about excessive noise from a mosque in her constituency. That is not a race or a religious issue; it is a planning issue.

Similarly, a journalist was arrested under the ISA for accurately reporting the racist remarks of a member of the ruling party. Essentially, she was arrested for being a good journalist, something in short supply in Malaysia. The party official was not arrested, although he was suspended.

A blogger was arrested for apparently exhibiting the Malaysian flag on his website upside down. I kid you not.

But perhaps Abdullah's saddest misstep has been the arrest of Raja Petra Kamarudin, who runs the hugely popular Malaysia Today website, which exposes wrongdoers in public life and provides a forum for robust political debate otherwise denied to Malaysians.

On September 23, Syed Hamid Albar, the Home Affairs Minister, signed the order for Raja Petra's detention without trial for two years. The order can be renewed indefinitely. Ostensibly, Raja Petra, a Muslim, was arrested for posting blogs that belittled Islam. The reality of course is that Raja Petra had belittled the Government. No longer can he post blogs that challenge the Government and blow the whistle on corruption and other wrongdoings on the part of Government officials.

Raja Petra appeared in court on Monday on a separate sedition charge. He was handcuffed, which is apt: you can't write if you're handcuffed.

Raja Petra knew that he could well be arrested and yet he continued. This sort of selflessness is all too rare in Malaysia.

Even Mahathir Mohamed, Malaysia's previous prime minister - who incidentally will be speaking at a seminar at Melbourne University on Saturday - has criticised the recent ISA arrests as unnecessary and excessive.

Perhaps such arrests are warranted in a country dangerously on the edge of racial and religious meltdown. But Malaysia is not.

The truth is, the Malaysian Government is the biggest source of ethnic and religious tension in Malaysia. It has an interest in constantly harping on about race, using imagined communal tensions as an excuse for its use of the ISA, to control the media and, above all, to head off threats to its own power. The race issue is manipulated not to protect Malaysians from each other but to protect the Government from opposition.

But the cracks are showing. Malaysia has never had a government this unpopular. Abdullah has said that he will leave office early but he refuses to resign. Najib Tun Razak, his deputy, is congenial enough but he is no leader. And then there's Anwar Ibrahim.

Anwar is offering himself as head of an alternative government, but he is proving to be politically incompetent. He announced that the Government would fall on September 16, because by then he thought he'd have the numbers - enough MPs prepared to leave the Government and join the Opposition. The day came and nothing happened. The golden rule of politics? Don't telegraph your punches, just punch.

Anwar has a lot of baggage too, so, at a time when Malaysia needs clever leadership more than ever, the sad choice is between who stinks less.

To Malaysian, this information is nothing new. Not only PakLah is a screw up PM, MCA's Ongkating, MIC's Semivalue, are all TOTALLY screwed up. These people MUST go. Since BN's priority is their pocket and family gains, the party should at least do something for the people by leaving the politics. Well, for Anwar, is he really the one we are looking for? The day himself, Azmin, Tian Chuah keep focusing on 916, sad to say that this is not happening. OK, I am now no longer optimistic about Anwar's pledge but I will suffer for another few more years for the coming General Election. People will make a wise decision by then.

nobody seems to know who made the decision for the intial ISA arrest. It seems the intention was more to make the government look stupid than for security reasons.

From what I can see, many nations in the world are setting up constitutions that give fair and legal rights to their multicultural society living within their borders, but it seems our beloved government is making things worse and spreading dissension amongst its multicultural citizens... what a pity... instead of progressing, our government is digressing... shame... a serious shame...

Present gomen just has to go. Rotten apple through and through. Too many chances have been given to them already and each time, we citizens end up cheated and short changed.
As for DSAI, he deserves a chance to prove that he can walk the talk as good as he can talk the walk. Let's pray that the bitter medicine he swallowed has made him a better person to do the job.

More like a congenital gangster actually.

So far those who stood in his way to the top has either been blown to bits, never seen or heard from again after making an SD, or locked up under the ISA.

The actors acted as heroes and villains and the spectators are departing. The Broadway show is at its last season this coming October (no confidence vote) after a 50 years run. Or, the spectators can also used the new found way of selecting the actors and director by stamping the powerful X (cross) on the ballot paper comes this 13th general election.
No more crumbling and stumbling Broadway show.

Malaysian democracy vs American democracy—In Malaysia, TV talk show hosts are free to analyse, critique and joke about American politicians, governance, the President and Presidential candidates. But if they dare try doing the same with their own government, they've pretty much signed their death warrant.

It is Umno the A-Z source of Malaysia woes and the party/leaders should be kicked out.

The Age forgot to mention the juicy part about Najib and those who opposed him ended up in prison.

Can't wait for the next general election.

This is a commentary in the insider and it should be posted here!!

Malaysians should no longer accept two anomalies of life here: the fact that the 2,000 men, fed and fattened on patronage, who pick the prime minister of the country and Malaysia's top two leaders come from a damaged political party.

There may have been a time when Umno politicians merited the respect shown to them by the public and the standing afforded to them by their political partners.

Those were the days when a large majority of Malays supported the political party and their leaders – Tunku Abdul Rahman, Tun Abdul Razak, Tun Dr Ismail Abdul Rahman, Tun Hussein Onn and Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad - enjoyed the wide embrace of Malaysians.

Those were the days when candidates from the party formed a clear majority in Parliament, and owned the allegiance of Chinese, Indian and non-Malay bumiputeras in Sabah and Sarawak.

Not anymore. Analysis of the general election results shows that Umno no longer can claim bragging rights of speaking for the Malays. The split with Parti Islam SeMalaysia (Pas) is nearly 50:50.

Anecdotal evidence also suggests that contempt with the arrogance and excess of Umno politicians was the main factor why Chinese and Indians deserted the Barisan Nasional in droves. In a nutshell, Umno does not enjoy the overwhelming support of Malays, Indians or Chinese.

In Parliamant, Umno has 79 seats, fewer than the 81 seats held by Pakatan Rakyat. It would have made sense if the country's leaders are chosen from Barisan Nasional because the coalition does have a clear majority in the House and government, not Umno.

Now let us examine the talent available in the ruling party. Nearly every one of the candidates who has offered himself for senior positions in the party comes with some baggage.

Tan Sri Muhammad Muhammad Taib will forever be known as the politician who forgot to declare RM3.8 million when entering Australia; Datuk Ahmad Zahid Hamidi was on the crony list revealed by Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad; Tan Sri Isa Samad just completed his suspension for money politics. The list goes on and on.

But perhaps the most troubling aspect of the current system of choosing Malaysian leaders is the fact that it is done by an electoral college of 2,000 Umno delegates.

These men and women are picked to represent their divisions at the party's general assembly through a mix of patronage and money politics.

In the 2004 party elections, candidates sprayed money at delegates to buy their support. One supreme council member gave each of the delegates 500 euros as pocket money. Why euros? He had just returned from an overseas trip and did not have the time to change the currency.

Four years on and nothing has changed.

Umno officials say that the money which was given to division leaders (but not used) to oil the election machinery for March 8 is only now flowing to the ground. It is being used to influence the voting of grassroots leaders.

These politicians, many of whom are stained by money politics, will over the course of October and November nominate those who are contesting for senior positions in the party.

In March, they will have a far more important role. In the cavernous Putra World Trade Centre, they will elect the party president, deputy president, vice-presidents and supreme council members. By convention, the top two in the party will become Prime Minister and Deputy Prime Minister of Malaysia.

Seems odd that we are still willing to allow 2,000 men and women to choose our leaders, knowing how decayed the Umno electoral process has become and how detached their leaders are to the aspirations of most Malaysians.

It is not correct to say that DSAI is politically imcompetent. He has set Sept 16 to obtain at least 31 BN MPs to support Pakatan and he has done that. He has kept the list secret to avoid the MPs concerned from being harassed or even threatened by the UMNO warlords. But Sept 16 is only a symbolic deadline as it is Malaysia Day. After that, procedural laws and the constitution have to be followed. DSAI tried to pursuade the good PM to call for early parliament session but PM chickened out. Now we, Malaysians have to wait for the scheduled parliament seating on Oct 13 for the vote of no confidence to be called. Be patient please, all who want change. Now that Paklah has announced his decision not to contest, he is a lame duck and therefore good grounds for vote of no confidence. Let's hope and pray for Oct 13.
