When I read Malaysiakini Furore over racist blog posting I thought to myself, f*, this is just the sort of stuff someone will seize on to divert attention from Ahmad Ismail … or the Kulim Wonder.

Another version of Namawee, so to speak, though the offending issue is different.

Mind you, not that it didn’t happen. Blogger Sammy, alas a sweetie, of Life is a Drama is certainly living up to her motto of ‘A life without a dash of conflict and colour will not be a complete one’, except she chose the theme of colour a wee too literally, and consequentially is now reaping the ugly conflict.

According to Athi Verenggan of Malaysiakini, Sammy went ballistic when two alleged Indian youths snatched her mobile phone left on a table while she was having lunch.

She did the silly thing by resorting to cynical stereotyping of Indians in the worst ways, and then made things worse for herself by posting the entire racist raving rant on her blog.

I don’t intend to repeat her words here for two reasons: (1) they are all available on Malaysiakini and (2) they have been most hurtful. I am truly disappointed by such racism and worse, sheer stupidity.

After she had ‘woken’ up from her rage she realized the enormity of what she had done and apologized, but when I read her blog this afternoon I thought she could have closed the whole issue (or at least most of it) by making an unreserved apology, instead of qualifying it by stating she apologized to ‘educated’ Indians, whatever that meant.

Much later in another post she admitted being told that her apology had been ‘grudging’.

She posted:

This just proved that we as human-being often jump to conclusion about something when we are angry. She has since sincerely apologised in Malaysiakini and thus I plead with all my Indian brothers and sisters to forgive and forget. Sammy is just a young chap being very immature in her posting. Let's move on guys.

This is unnecessary for people to make a big fuss over the comments of a young girl who is neither a prominent person nor a people representative. There are always a lot of these type of people in all the community. Its the criminal waste of time to give attention and publicity to these ignorant youths and theirs comments.. Don't mix politics with everything.

Where are we heading? What about the teacher who insulted her Indian students? Our great education minister rewarded her with a transfer closer to her home. This is what kids learn from schools. Who do we blame them for such racist remarks?

22 huh.. the world is big out there, go feel it first and come back in the next 10 years, then talk else shut up and keep your comments to yourself. When you live in other people country for decades, then you'll know the meaning of the word "appreciate" when seeing other Malaysians there regardless indian, malay, chinese, iban, bidayuh etc... Just because you lost one mobile phone, you turned to some racial maniac. It's not end of the world kiddo! There are much more important issues to concern about other than your mobile phone. smilies/angry.gif

Damn !!...After months of political debate on racism in Malaysia, I thought Malaysians have come of age.

Mann was I wrong. Now out of nowhere, I'm forced to read this monkey of a statement made by one Chinese of a whore who just demonstrated depths of stupidity a Chinese could possess which was never thought possible before. Of course this does not apply to those educated ones...Now after having said that, I forgive u!

Could u now kindly reveal the name of the advertisement agency that was stupid enough to have employed u?

I say this, and I will say it again. Sammy is nothing more than the end product of our racist education. Family may play a role in moulding the character of a child but the long hours spent in school can be psychologically threatening. There were days when my two boys would come back from school muttering cursories under their breath for something a teacher had said, and I have to tell them to think critically about the subject and wear its pros and cons before making any judgement. So how much do parents have to morally educate their children? Very little. I am also in agreement with lokenpal that racial issues are not confined on an inter level but intra level as well. I am a Chinese Malaysian and there were times when a fellow Chinese did not show some sense of road courtesies, I could feel myself almost going ballistic and would have probably use the statement, "that moronic **@@@!!! chinese!". We are living in a stressful & bottled-up society and any unfortunate mishap, like Sammy's, could easily trigger off some negative emotions, and it could have happened to us as well.

Interesting to see some acting all high and mighty when the favourite pastime here seems to be "m a m a k" bashing. Everyone is crying foul that the government is trying to censor the internet and blocking freedom of speech when their favourite blogger is arrested but when someone says something they dislike, they start to act like a mob demanding his/her head.

I think we should practice the same standards that we are preaching i.e. no censorship of the internet. Otherwise, you should not cry foul when the government starts censoring things online. Hell, I don't agree with what many websites are saying but I don't go crying to the police for them to be investigated on one hand, while on the other hand start baying at the police when they act against those that I do agree with.

I would hope that the people who disagree with her would respond to her post intelligently and debate her on the issue. Calling for censorship (police investigation into something we do not agree with) is akin to saying, "Yes, we admit that the Internet needs to be policed and we are giving up our right for total freedom of speech."

The Internet is the ultimate medium for free speech. Anyone can post their thoughts or opinions here. I think that the online community has always done a good job in policing itself through debates and exchange of ideas when they disagree. I for one am worried about the future of Internet in Malaysia when people start calling for police intervention. When will it all end?

How many times has one race "insulted" another race in Malaysia? Countless times, I'm sure. I'm also certain that many of us have uttered some form of racist remarks at one time or another, in anger. From the Top rank to the most bottom rank racism has reared its ugly head. We just have not reached the stage where we can see beyond each race and treat/trust one another as brother/sister MALAYSIANS. It will take time and education but if everyone makes an effort I'm sure it can be achieved. No point making mountains out of molehills. It will just make the situation worse. Police reports? Seems to be the norm these days.

Another racist Malaysian? Ho hum. Why the big fuss? Who is she? She hurt you? She running for public office?

Oh, hurt feelings? Ouch ouch ouch ouch.

I do not wish to defend Sammy. She wants to appear the fool, then it's up to her. You want to cuss at her, it's up to you. She says what she likes, you say what you like, I say what I like. There are other racist stuff out there and I'll tell you how I usually deal with them... IGNORE. Most of them is all talk without any real harm. Hurt feelings don't kill me.

Before we condemn her, let's sit back and ask if we ourselves fall into the same mould. If not for moderation in this blog, how many of us would not resort to the same posture in our writings? Someone mentioned that there's a bit of Ahmad Ismail in each and every one of us. I think it's true. The different is whether one is open about it or not. Let's reflect whether if this is the direction we and our children want to go. Racism and religious bigotry are thriving in this country no thank to the politicians.

I have two things to say about this

1) The problems of racism is complex in Malaysia. Lee Kuan Yew was right in that he described it as 'deep fissures' within our society. But its all the more reason why the UMNO-BN formula, which basically proposed either bashing away conflicts in one race favour OR white-washing it, le*** to nowhere and causes as much and even worst problems in the long run.

2) Its not all bad in this incident. She Did apologized. And she did it because there is open democratic process on the internet. It shows WE ARE CAPABLE of solving our problems ON OUR OWN through open democratic discussion. We don't need the govt to tell us what to do or propose a solution. All we need the govt is implement the rule of law and protect individual rights including the rights of Hindraf to protest and NOT be detained by obscenity that is the ISA.

PASOK, you and Sammy make me feel ashamed to be a Chinese. What the racists in UMNO say and do is mild compared to Sammy's blog. I hope the Indians will slap her and spit on her every time they see her ugly face. It's because of Sammy and other morons like her that the Malays hate the Chinese and have vowed to bathe their keris with Chinese blood. Let's face it, if not for us Chinese, the Malays will have no hatred for the non-Malays. That's a fact.

First Samy fcuks the Indians. Now Sammy fcuks the Indians! WTF is going on? Are they related?

Earlier there was this umno adun in Perak who compared Indians with snakes. Then it was a malay teacher in Banting who made racist staments to her Indian students. Then Ahmad Ismail called chinese as squatters. Now Sammy Chan's turn.

Anyway, its great that we bloggers have self regulated it ourselves and resolved the issue!

I have to agree with this.

In the past the chinese have been so outright racist, especially in the years before 1969, that the malays became counter racist to the point we all non malays suffer, especially the Indians who bore the brunt of it and became the whipping boy.

I feel that it is the chinese who have to make the first amends and untie this knot.

I am alarmed and ashamed at some of the comments posted. What happen to “COMPASSION”?

She is entitled to her own opinion. That what MT is all about. You readers out there have the right to disagree. If need to be condemned, please do so with compassion.

Most importantly, she apologised and removes the offensive articles from her blog. I think we shouldn’t be petty in trying to gauge whether her apologise was made profusely or grudgingly. Bottom line is, she learn her lesson. She ought to be encouraged rather than be condemned.

In Malaysia, who is not a racist? We have been programmed to be racist for the past 50 years, it is only the level of racism we harbour. So, it is high time to get over it and move on.

For those who think she should be jailed or ISAed are no better than those suckers who put RPK behind bars.

Malaysia endorsed and approved racialism. This is a fact. UMNO is a racial party. So is MCA, PAS and MIC. Gerakan and DAP are suppose to be multi racial parties but at the moment, they appear more like a racial parties. If our political master embraces racialism, how can you expect Malaysians at large to be different.

Our policy segragate race be it in investment or education. You seldom hear a politician standing up for another race. Ahmad Ismail is a racist. If we charge people like Raja Petra, Theresa Kok and the Sin Chew journalist under ISA, what Ahmad Ismail did deserve to go to jail and be ban from join any politicaly parties. We have to send a strong message to every Malaysians that we do not tolerate racist remarks or action. All policies will have to be changed to reflect that.

Under we can do that, it is sad to say Malaysia is still a country that embraces racialism.

Ugh.. it is enough that we are walking an emotional tightrope these days with the arrest of RPK, Anwar's promises etc etc. I thought we made great progress by showing unity and protesting against the atrocities.
Now this close minded woman is going to upset the delicate peace we've held for this long. You just know that Utusan and all those pro-UMNO papers are gonna have a field day with this.

Thanks alot Sammy.
