Oct 3 – The MCA needs a president with a track record of standing up to Umno, says presidential candidate Datuk Chua Jui Meng.

Chua, who has called for an end to NEP-type policies, said the MCA will suffer an even heavier defeat at the next general election if a strong leader is not elected.

He said that in the three years since he lost in his first attempt at the MCA presidency, circumstances have changed tremendously.

And this is why he is making another tilt at the No. 1 post despite coming up against what is basically the incumbent leadership.

Despite repeated denials, frontrunner Datuk Ong Tee Keat is effectively the handpicked candidate of outgoing president Datuk Seri Ong Ka Ting, who defeated Chua in 2005.

Datuk Seri Ong Ka Chuan, Ka Ting's brother, who is running for deputy president, has publicly backed Tee Keat.

When asked by The Malaysian Insider why he felt he had a chance against Tee Keat, Chua replied: "The party is in crisis after being rejected by its own community. Somebody has to save the party, to give it hope to turn the situation around and make it relevant again."

During the interview, he added that he had foreseen what would happen while campaigning three years ago.

"I warned that even in the aftermath of a great victory in the 2004 general election, Umno's hardening and arrogance in not being mindful of the sensitivities meant that, if MCA did not effect real change, it would become increasingly irrelevant," said the former five-term vice-president.

"I wish I hadn't been right so I can continue to be retired happily, but now I am forced back into national service. Now I am telling the central delegates again, if there is no senior leader with a track record of standing up to Umno leaders, then we're going to go down in the next general election."

The former health minister had recently incurred the ire of four Umno supreme council members when he called for the scrapping of the NEP at the launch of his campaign manifesto.

"They called me a racist but they don't realise the NEP is not a programme for just one race but a national programme that affects all Malaysians.

"I am surprised my opponent dismissed the NEP as an old issue," he said referring to Ong's statement that they had both aired their views on it decades ago when they sat together on the National Economic Consultative Council.

"It has impacted millions over the decades and it must come to an end," he insisted and added that the "racial dichotomy" of the NEP would alienate the 800,000 new voters in the next general elections.

Also a five-time consecutive Bakri MP - he did not run this March and subsequently, MCA lost the seat to DAP - he agreed that it was "very clear" that the Oct 18 party polls was crucial.

"It is absolutely important. It is practically a mission for the central delegates. If they choose wrongly, you will see the same old thing. To become relevant again, we need a senior leader who has experience in the Cabinet and Parliament to negotiate with Barisan Nasional especially Umno by coming to them and saying, 'Look we have transformed, so must you.'"

He said that by the next general election, BN had no alternative but to change and stop being race-centric.

"The obvious answer is no," he answered when asked if race-based parties could still be relevant in the future.

However, he added: "If MCA becomes multiracial now, will Malays and Indians join?"

He said the idea of BN merging into one multiracial party depended on "the capacity to change, then we can move towards being multiracial," but he said he could not speak on behalf of Umno or any other component party on this issue.

But he warned that if the status quo remained, "increasingly MCA will feel it does not serve a purpose," adding that there was already a determination at the grassroots for change, and members were prepared for the party to leave BN.

If this were to happen, Chua suggested that the party "call an EGM to collectively make a decision" on its future in the coalition.

MCA is irrelevant and it will remain so. When will MCA leaders realize that the Chinese have deserted them for good. Even ordinary members are given up on the party which exists to serve the leaders.
Stand up to UMNO. Fat hopes. UMNO will show you the middle finger. When the keris was brandied MCA ran with its tail in between the legs.
How on earth can a slave be equal to the master?

Dear Datuk Chua. The only way to stand up to UMNO is to quit MCA or MCA quit BN. Whatever you do, as long as MCA is in BN, will mean nothing to Malaysians - not just Chinese Malaysians. So stop pretending that all is well. Join the reform movement now and that is real attempt to reform Malaysian politics for the good of all Malaysians.

Jui Meng, I think you think you are fooling MCA members into thinking you are a fighter for Malaysian Chinese rights! Your sole goal is to be the President of MCA. Then, after becoming the President of MCA, your real sly, slimy, cunning, conniving, and self serving person will manifest itself fully to become the obedient dog of UMNO.
Anybody who thinks you can be a good leader must either be paid by you or is a complete idiot!

A friend in need is a friend indeed.
But, sadly the UMNOputras have long ago consider you folks as friends rather as wagging dogs.
The MCA is irrelevant to UMNO as it is to the PR.
So at least with the UMNOputras, they have some semblance of authority however minimal it may be

When a thief stands up to another thief, it is either because he did not get enough of the share or there is not enough to share...

Since March 08, there is no more Chinese community, Indian community, Malay community etc. There is only one community....that is...The Malaysian community!

This is why he can't win. Standing up to UMNO is not the answer. UMNO may be technically the leader of BN but its ideas of leadership and change has always been borrowed, copied.

The only way for BN to go forward for MCA is for MCA to convince UMNO the BN must move to a true nationalist or Republican party. It does mean giving up the NEP but it does not mean giving up power which is what they really feared. Life will be harder but its also more sustainable in the long run..

Why should you stand up to UNMO if UMNO had not done anything wrong. Isn't it every thing is cordial and all issues are discussed and approved in the weekly cabinet meeting? Why only now, MCA say need to stand up? What in our (chinese name)have MCA been doing for 51 years? Sleeping or counting how much money to make by this and that tender and projects. To MCA member and Leader, please do not try to represent us. You are evil, corrupt, good for nothing, power hungry, liar, snake, while we just want a peaceful life. Please do not gamble with our future, so far in the 51 years of history, you have not bring one iota of good to the chinese community. All your members who join MCA is because of the prospect of "cari lubang" and "taking advantage" of others. Running dog or MCA even migrate to Australia while trying to represent Malaysian Chinese.

Datuk Chua, you are wasting your saliva! You are talking to the bunch of stooges with their balls already castrated and without that balls, THEY the things cannot stand up one!

In the whole of MCA including that Tee Keat fella, have no balls to stand up! Stand up to face Umno to them is like stand up beneath the gallows, to be hanged! There is only one man in the whole of Malaisia, only RPK dares to stand up be it under the gallows or to take on Umno devils! MCA sucks!

Even you Dato Chua dare to stand up now, it's only during the election, general election or party election inclusive. After that you people will sit back, sit back to the cushy leather chair stashed beside the money coffer gold plated!!!!! Save it, we have had heard enough craps!!!! WE only interested to see RPK is released, BN abolished!!!!!

Uncleleow,
Very well said. Generally speaking Chinese people have a lot of pride and dignity. But these people in MCA are from a totally different breed, the pariah breed. How else can you explain their continued association with UMNO? Aren't they not ashame to still claim that they represent the Chinese? Talking about standing up to UMNO. All Syed Hamid needs to do is tell them to shut up, and they quietly shut up. In Hokkien these people just too "kia sie".
