The legendary Singapore opposition icon, Joshua Benjamin Jeyaretnam, better known as JBJ (photo credit: Wikipedia), passed away early this morning of a heart failure.

After having left the Workers Party, he had just formed the Reform Party to mount a new challenge to PAP dominance. He was the interim secretary general of the party.

He was Singapore’s Mr Opposition, having broken the PAP’s 15-year monopoly in Parliament in the Anson by-election in 1981, winning 52 per cent of the votes to become Singapore’s first opposition MP.

He suffered much personal hardship after being at the losing end of a string of defamation and libel law suits and was forced to pay substantial damages, which eventually left him bankrupt for a number of years.

This man has a heart of a lion.
Merciless Lee Kuan Yew, the Sinagpore version of Satan, will hate him even in death but then heaven loves JB. May his soul rest in peace. Amen.

All I know is Mr. Jeyaretnam took a heavy blow while he was alive, and it's so sad that he's no longer with us. May his athma attains the sanctified sanctum which he clearly deserves, and may the rest of the "other" people in Singapore realizes what a good man Mr. Jeyaretnam was.

What a lion of a man! It’s a pity that the Singapore of today will not produce anymore like him. It stifles dissent. But wherefrom will your creativity come from if you only want to be surrounded by yes men?

I used to enjoy watching Singapore’s parliamentary sessions when JBJ was in Parliament. What a great speaker. The whole bunch of MPs were no match for him. It needed LKY to attend Parliament often to fend off the attacks from JBJ.

To JBJ’s family, he is indeed a Man who is greatly respected on both sides of the causeway!

He has fought the good fight and is now receiving his just rewards from his maker! I am sure he can hold his head up high unlike many politicians on both sides of the causeway!

The people of Singapore killed him. They did not back him or stand by him. They did not even buy his books. That broke his heart. That killed him.

Its a sad commentary on Singapore.

LKY remember who stood by you the earlier days. A person who does not know to appreciate true friends but instead backstabs a true friend will have to answer in the afterlife. Mr. Jeyaretnam may god bless your soul.

JB Jeyaretnam was a man with heart, passion and vision. Unfortunately, he lived in a society that has sold its soul for material gains and had its passion snuffed out of everything except the desire to be one up on everyone else.

Yes, its the Singaporeans who killed a great and humble man as him. They were too AFRAID to stand by him and to support him and he was only trying to give the nation a much needed "soul". Shanme on you Singaporeans. His death should prick the conscience of Singaporeans but alas I doubt it.

I had the opportunity to meet him once at Singapore Raffles Place standing by the side walk trying to sell his books and you can clearly see that the Singapore public was afraid to be seen associated with him in anyway lest buy his book. LKY is the exact version of TM no wonder they cant see eye to eye. They hate each others guts. They terrorise their citizens.

JBJ died fighting for something called freedom in quasi communist Singapore where freedom is not valued. Singaporean judges and the legal system is widely acknowledged as being under the thumb of the PAP govenment. They used weird bankruptcy laws to silence not only JBJ but a whole lot of other individuals and news media.

Malaysians must ponder..no matter how screwed up this country is....would you want to be Singaporean....The Tunku may have saved this country from being a Singapore......but today.....Malaysians have the freedom to sack a corrupt government that uses the same weapons as the PAP .....history may finally judge the Tunku and JBJ far more kindly then LKY and sons Ltd.....

The passing of this legend will create a void in Spore politics. Don't be surprise in another 10 years time everything will turn upside down! LYK will also pass on. No one can last forever. Just as TDM legacy being dismantle by AAB, LYK legacy too will dismantle and topple!
