KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 27 (Bernama) -- Gua Musang Member of Parliament Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah feels that the Umno election originally scheduled for December should proceed instead of being postponed to March next year.
He said the decision by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi to speed up the plan to hand over power to his deputy, Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak earlier than June 2010 as scheduled originally would not make any change. "Whatever suggestion that is being made will not change the situation. The Prime Minister is stil the Prime Minister until 2010, if he is elected (as Umno president) in March as suggested, then he would remain until 2010, so it does not matter," he said at a media conference at his residence, here Saturday. At the special Umno Supreme Council (MT) meeting Friday, Abdullah, who is also the Umno president, announced that the MT decided to postpone the party general assembly, which had ealier been scheduled for December, to March next year to smoothen the process of an earlier power transition. Tengku Razaleigh said he was also confident that Umno grassroots rejected the postponement and the power transition plan which was not specified in the party constitution. "I believe the members reject the proposal and would stick to what was decided all this while (party election in December), I don't doubt the members' love for the party," he said. Tengku Razaleigh is also firm on his decision to contest the post of Umno president if he received the necessary nominations and he was confident that he would receive the support of the party members.
