Have we misrepresented ourselves to RPK? PDF Print

Not deliberately, perhaps, but have we?

Not setting out to lie and mislead him, but have we, nonetheless?

Have we, you and I, on the one hand, and RPK on the other, been at cross-purposes?

We’ve given him the wrong impression?

Let me try and illustrate the point I’m trying to make.

The setting is perfect.

Music, lighting and all.

Two people look into each others eyes, one declares to the other, ‘I want you tonight’, and the other proclaims ‘Yes, make love to me’, both not quite realising that they don’t quite mean the same thing.

One is in lust mode, the other in love.

No-one’s trying to mislead anyone.

At cross purposes.

Only to be discovered later, probably at the expense of one, when that one is in dire straits.

A bit like RPK and us, perhaps?

RPK exposes one scandal after another, and we urge him on.

Malaysia needs you, RPK’, ‘You are our hero, RPK’, ‘We salute you, RPK’…

RPK does not pause to ask, ‘What mean you all by this?’

RPK is threatened with arrest, with detention, with law suits and all and sundry declare solidarity with him.

Check the comments in Malaysia Today!

A good reminder to all who don't 'walk the talk'!
It is genearally understood that,
Most Singaporeans are 'KIASU' ( Fear of being loser )!
Almost all Malaysians are "KIASI' ( Fear of being killed )!

A lot of people whom I forwarded the petition to asked me if I am crazy to put my name & email address.

They are worried that they will get in trouble if they sign. They are scared that they will be found and will be black-listed. They give 101 excuses for not signing the petition. PATHETIC!!

Why bother to write comments in MT then? Why bother to grumble and complain about the system, about corruption etc etc?? Why shout to nobody? Why hide under a fake name? Why be anonymous?

It is people like these pathetic complaining bunch that want part of the goodies BUT refuse to take part in anything to do with actually going out to look for the goodies. Get my drift?

RPK is doing so much for us. Is signing a petition for his release too much for us to give in return? WOuld any of you be willing to do what he done just so we can see some reforms and justice?

SIGH... Talk till no saliva also no use.

Yes admin, I do believe MT commentators have somewhat painted RPK as somebody he might not want to be. Excited comment that was overdone and extremely racial might picture RPK as excepting it. RPK many times, have denied responsibility for these comments.

Sorry to be wet blanket, but it is a fact of life that most big social movements or even revolutions consume their own leaders. Even Harun Idris was consumed by May 13. I believe RPK knows this very well. He fights because he wants to not 100% because of us. He fights behind bars as well as when he is free.

Of course, it is much better if he is free. But he is not. And he is not free to say what he thinks either, so commentators - no need to be "holier than thou".

RPK himself is clearly for the ISA to be abolished. He said as much in his article on the detained Hindraf leaders. Often followers tweak the beliefs of their leaders. Even the Prophet himself suffered this fate with countless "followers and faithful" tweaking his teachings. Generations of "tweaking" have created the mess we now have. The latest "tweaking" being Hadhari.

So ... no need to be "holier than thou". We love RPK. We want him out, but there is no need to be "holier than thou". I can't speak for RPK, but I find such "holier than thou" attitude quite nauseating.

Haris,
You can say that again about many chickenshit guys who comment (not all - just a large minority) who care more for for their fears than for well being of a patriot or the nation.
On the other hand they may just be parasites/opportunists who just wish to ride on the benefits on all quarters - right or wrong.
These guys are no better than the pirates who masquerade as politicians/leaders.

I was disgusted by the pathetic response to the petition to YDPA on the judiciary.
Maybe in future, all who comment on MT or the popular blogs should be asked to register with webmaster using their NRIC- that way we'll know the "wheat from the chaff".

I think we have. It is great to post comments when we have anonymity, not held accountable for what we say and better still, have someone else take the rap for our comments. The petition here only requires an email (not an i.c no as in the petition to the Agong) but when push comes to shove, many of us take a reality check, asking ourselves if we are prepared to take that extra step. Most do not. And that's the difference between RPK and us. He is prepared not only to stand up for his princilpes and beliefs but willing to sit in jail for them. That's the true measure of a man. Most of us are good at scolding the emperor behind his back. RPK scolds in his face and in writing to boot!

No, no...I think you have it all wrong! RPK did not do it because the bloggers cheer him on. He did it because of his own convictions and belief that this country needs to be ruled with fairness and justice. Please do not make him to be so pathetic. He will not beg for sympathy or support...he gets it his way and no other way. He is a warrior, a fighter that will fight till the end if it means taking away his own life! He is no ordinary man...he is a true Malaysian...to be respected and honoured. His legacy will go down in history as one who dare to take on Goliath!

Give him the honour he so deserve! We salute you RPK!

No weapons form against you shall prosper because you have done what others only dream of...you have taken the road less travelled!

Let's continue to believe something good will come out of this because we belief justice will prevail and evil has no place but to hide!

Government cannot put all the million readers in prison if all the 1 million sign for the petition. I urge again PLEASE GIVE YOUR SUPPORT. Do not let him and a few others fight the battle. We must all do our part no matter how small it is.

Now that he is behind bar, the truth surfaces clearly…..Merely 20K of signatories for the petition, all these millions of hits for MT, is nothing but attendance for a freak show….Poor Pete, now 2 years to pay when it’s so clear that people are comfortable with the status quo…this is Malaysia, he should have known better, we simply deserve our government….

Why are we attacking each other? It is not a crime to sign a sincere petition, a pleading, neither is it a crime not to sign.

I signed the petition, sincerely hoping that the authority will consider our reasons. I even pleaded to our DPM to release all ISA detainees in his new blog. I surely hope he is not offended by my pleading as it is just a sincere pleading.

For those who choose not to sign the petitions, we can explain that signing a sincere petition is not a crime, but let us also respect their decisions, they must have their reasons too and they may choose to support RPK's course in some other forms.

When I first joined RPK's blog I read with chills down by spine how people literally "worshiped" him. The first thought that came to me then was that these people will be the ones who will abandon him when shit hits the fan.

Many readers here followed the development like watching a bad movie. They felt bored and just couldn't wait for the next stimulation and revelation. When they have to take a stand their knees felt weak.

I did RPK's astrology and the picture is exactly what he is in his writings. RPK's fight the good fight not because of all the accolades thrown at him. He fought it because it is in his nature to fight injustices wherever he found it - without any thought for fame and fortune.

That's the man of character and it is in his character.

Free RPK. I had signed in case anyone doubted my sincerity.

Batsman says:
..........they have more rights to comment than others just because they signed the petition. Some even call for registration of "right stuff" commmentators.
How different is this from apartheid and Ketuanan Melayu?

============================================

The difference is - we know who's the liar. That's all.
But of course you can still comment, by praising RPK to the high heavens, despite being a liar.

On that count, I (i.e. personally actually - I donno about RPK) prefer the non-hypocritical commenters who oppose RPK in a healthy manner and provide room for debate and ideas. Get it right - these comments whacking the guys who comment are meant for the "kaki bodeks" who make it seem like they worship him, when they are just playing a game.

Nobody said that your right to comment should be taken away ..... that's very different from Ketuanan Melayu and Apartheid, batsman.

I think one of the problem with the slow response is a couple of blogs calling for using discretion before signing the petition as it indirectly implicates that those who signed are supporting the ISA law.

Had I read the postings before I signed the petition, I probably wouldn't have or at least hesitated.

So all those who haven't please do it now... RPK is going to Kamunting... that is not a proper place for our hero... OK! OK! OK!

YM RPK will be saddened, not by the fact that he is incarcerated,
but by the fact that the rakyat have still not matured.
He is still fighting the lonely fight for justice and end of corruption, except for a handful who will walk in-step with him.
We are more concerned about fighting amongst ourselves than fighting the common enemy!
Such is the reality - true men of honour, integrity, courage are a rarity.
More so such men who will fight for the good of the nation.
To YM RPK and the men of your ilk - my highest salutations!

I just picked this up from a web site suggesting that we can carry out a synchronised action to voice our discontent over RPK's detention. I called the number but was directed to post on the PM's website.

Option 1: Flood PM office with phone call around the clock

This option requires us to make calls to PM office. PM Office Phones are: 03-8888-8000 / 03-8888-8032 . Let's coordinating the calls so that it goes round clock for 2 days. Use the first letter of your first name; And mapped it to the hour starting from 00:00 AM. That is, the hour 00:00 is for those with first name starts with letter "A" to make the calls. 01:00 for letter "B", and so on. Let's start the calls at 1 PM Sep 22 (Monday), and our last call at 1 PM, Sep 24
Effect: There should be some psychological impacts if we have thousand of calls. PM secretary might tell AAB: "Lines are flooded with demand to release RPK the whole day; Statistic shows we have 10,000 calls today..." . It will be even better if the phone system is simply shutdown accidentally or deliberately (by the PM staffs)-- then we can report it here and possibly make it a news.

Option 2: Send synchronized emails to PM Office
This option requires us to send email at the exact time. The PM office email is This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it . We need to send email at exactly 10 AM Sep 23.
Effect: The sheer number of emails should have some psychological impact. The secretary might report to PM: "I received 20000 emails all within 5 minutes, and they all ask for releasing RPK. Can I just delete all of them?".

Option 3: Flood calls to Deputy IGP Ismail Omar's office
The option requires us to call the Acting IGP Ismail Omar through Bukit Aman phone number 03-2262-6222 . When you call, you of course will be directed to his staff but you probably should start with "May I speak with Tan Sri Omar directly please, ..." to show that you mean business.

RPK does not do what he does because of his following (small/medium or large). He does it because he wants to as it is a call of his conscience. He knows the consequences of his actions and he accepts them.

I am not RPK but am a man of conscience, I do not worship but I admire him for what he stands for and if HE asks me personally to trade places with him and take his pain, I will.

A lot of commentators talk a lot of crap (EMPTY VESSELS MAKE THE MOST NOISE), I ignore them, a few are wise and I follow what they write and enjoy thier writings. We all know who we are. I have no fight with anyone - my fight is against tyranny and injustice and we should all join together and kill these beasts. Only then RPK and us will all be FREE.

All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are endowed with reason and conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood.

Man is born free, but everywhere he is in chains.
Jean Jacques Rousseau, The Social Contract

Malaysian Government is GUILTY of breaking the Social Contract in its use of the ISA

Abuses of ISA
The ISA has been consistently used against people who criticise the government and defend human rights. Known as the “white terror”, it has been the most feared and despised, yet convenient tool for the state to suppress opposition and open debate. The Act is seen by some as an instrument maintained by the ruling government to control public life and civil society.

Lets ensure we get rid of ISA for good.

Dear Haris,

Here is my answer:-

A FEARLESS PATRIOT IN OUR MIDST

After reading at length Haris Ibrahim’s take on whether we, the readers & commentators of Malaysia Today, have misrepresented ourselves to our beloved RPK, and having done much soul searching, my conclusion is spelt out below.

Raja Petra Kamaruddin being Raja Petra Kamaruddin would have continued with his crusade against Injustice, Inequality, Corruption, Abuse of Power, and Cover-Ups by the Powers-that-be, and his fight for Free Speech, Civil Rights, the Poor, the Down-Trodden, and those too weak to defend themselves, whether or not anyone encouraged or “egged” him on or not.

That is the power of FAITH of a True Muslim who holds fast to his Islamic Principles, and a MAN who fears nothing, and answers to no one, but God. That describes Pete’s character in a nutshell pretty succinctly. He speaks out against the people in power fearlessly, knowing full well these unprincipled beasts dressed in human clothing would retaliate using all the arsenal at their disposal, including the Devil’s own invention, the Internal Security Act, which has no place in a Democratic country and in Civil Society, as it gives Dictatorial Power to these unprincipled animals to Abuse and incarcerate Upright and Outstanding Citizens like Raja Petra Kamaruddin who poses no security threat to anyone, let alone the country.

This travesty of Justice as used by Syed Hamid Albar and his Ministry’s minions, the Special Branch, called the ISA, must be repealed IMMEDIATELY and ALL detainees under the ISA should be either freed, or charged in court under due legal process. No one in a democratic country like what Malaysia professes to be, should be subjected to abuse under the ISA where any citizen can be detained without charges just by the police, or some dictatorial Minister or even Prime Minister, at their mercy. This is a blatant travesty of Justice.

Enough digression on the ISA issue. This is about our FOLK HERO, Raja Petra, after all. It is people like Pete, who is the conscience of Malaysia and Malaysian society, who keep our faith in humanity intact. No doubt, he must have experienced some disappointment at not achieving the number of petitioners for both the Agong’s petition and the Free RPK and other ISA detainees’ petition, but that would not have stopped him in his Noble Quest of walking the straight and narrow path of TRUTH, and the expression of it.

In Pakistan, the people would have come out in droves, on the streets, to defend their democratic rights to freedom and an independent Judiciary, but these are people who dared to secede from a country based on their religious beliefs, and form their own country. Not so Malaysians who are mainly immigrants from Indonesia, China, and India, who either ran away from hardship at home, or from despotic governments. Malaysians are not built the same way as Pakistanis or Bangladeshis, or others who have stayed and fought for their rights.

These Malaysians are peace-loving middle class types who just want to make a decent enough living for their families and don’t like suffering any type of hardships. Recently, this has been threatened by the massive corruption that going on in Malaysia and the huge increase in the cost of living. Suddenly, their middle-class world came crashing down like a house of cards, and that is when the Tsunami of March 8th 2008 happened, and the Permatang Pauh by-election underlined the feelings of the common Malaysian.

Voting anonymously and having no fear of direct repercussions emboldens even cowards to come forward and be counted, literally, and this was reflected in the two polls, at the GE and at the PP by-election.

But to get these same people to come out with their names and IC numbers, or even their names and email addresses, to back these most worthy petitions was probably too much to expect. These same people would bypass Govt. blocks to read Malaysia Today, and to comment under pseudonyms, but would not jeopardize their “rice bowl” of their families by risking being identified by the authorities and the government of the day, and put out to pasture prematurely. These same people who vociferously support Raja Petra and Malaysia Today cannot be trusted upon to stand forth and be counted when the chips are down.

As statistics show, only 26,000 or so have the guts to put their signatures and names where their mouths were and are, out of 1,000,000 plus Malaysia Today readers, and that is the sorry state of Malaysia and Malaysians, today! As Zaid Ibrahim pointed out at the court house on the 23rd Sept. at Pete’s transfer to Kamunting when our sorry excuse of a Home Minister signed those papers for the transfer, Malaysia sorely needs more people like Raja Petra, who dare to speak up and speak out. However, these same people who have done nothing to jeopardize their rice bowls, will be more than willing to be heard and make their presence felt at the next GE. They just have no stomachs for suffering or even the possibility of suffering for themselves and their families, by disclosing their identities and standing proudly for what they secretly believe in, in petitions, or demonstrations.

We have to live with this Malaysian psyche, like it or not, though the younger generation has shown much more guts, and become more vocal in Malaysian society. The future looks much brighter with the enlightened youth of today, and much of the thanks have to go to Raja Petra, and people like him, who have stood Unwaveringly for their principles and the TRUTH, to enlighten all Malaysians and foreigners to what is actually happening in Malaysia.

Raja Petra is a True Son of Malaysia and a Malaysian Patriot that all Malaysians can be proud of, whether or not they agree with his views. He stands for what he believes in, and is willing to go to jail under the Draconian ISA for what he stands for. A Towering Malaysian for our younger generation to emulate, and aye, even for the older generation, too, and especially those who only find their guts when the elections come round.

If I were part of Raja Petra’s family, I would hold my head up HIGH and be the proudest person in the world to have a patriarch like Raja Petra, and to have the opportunity to support him through all his challenges. We are in a way Raja Petra’s extended family and I would ask that we do what we can to help free Raja Petra from the clutches of the Devil, the ISA, by proactively signing the petition to free him. Throw your caution to the winds and sign. Whatever your religion, do you believe that we are here on Earth just to live for four score years and die for nothing?? Let us do something that is Right and Good, so that at the end of our four score years on Earth, we have something to show our Maker. Here is the petition address http://www.petitiononline.com/...ition.html

Just SIGN IT ! Only your email address is needed. Go and register a new one for this if you must, but sign it, and get your family members to sign it as well as your friends. For the sake of our Patriot & Towering Malaysian, Raja Petra Kamaruddin, let him be FREE and walk in our midst once more.
