KOTA KINABALU: What really triggered Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP) president Yong Teck Lee's announcement on 17 Sept to pull out from the Barisan Nasional (BN) coalition?

While it appears to remain a mystery, SAPP deputy president Raymond Tan -- who disagreed with the decision to leave BN -- has revealed that Yong was actually unhappy when no additional seats were given to SAPP in the last general election.

Although the SAPP supreme council has cited the loss of BN spirit within the coalition as the main reason for the party's pullout, it appears to be shrouded in ambiguities as the party tries to strategise its political game plan.

They justified their move by saying that Sabah has been shortchanged all this while, and highlighted the eight-point declaration to achieve the desired result.

These included good governance and non-racial politics, automony for Sabah, a 20% oil royalty, return of Labuan, review of unfair laws and detrimental departments, Borneonisation of the Federal civil service, solution to the illegal issues and redress economic and social imbalances.

However, Raymond's revelation has somewhat unearthed "a political secret" behind the party's move to ditch BN.

It became more confusing when Yong reportedly declared his intention to contest on a BN ticket in the Kota Kinabalu Parlimentary seat before the 8 March general election.

Raymond was quoted Wednesday (17 Sept) as saying that "Yong's game plan was to get more seats for SAPP" but did not materialise.

"I believe this could be the real triggering event that evoked the feelings or seeds of unhappiness towards the BN leadership.

"I think the rest are only contributing factors that precipitated the departure of SAPP from the BN coalition," veteran political analyst Iskandar Martin Gayo told Bernama here Friday (19 Sept).

Iskandar said as a BN component party, SAPP should have settled the issue of seat allocation within the BN family in a friendly atmosphere.

"But, it's still unclear why SAPP could not accept the seat allocations of two Parlimentary and four state seats.

"But, one thing's for sure, other small parties like Parti Bersatu Rakyat Sabah (PBRS) and Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) abided by the decision of the BN leadership.

"Perhaps, SAPP was confident of being allocated additional seats but it did not turn out the way they wanted it to be," he said.

Iskandar opined this might have prompted SAPP to adopt a confrontational approach in tackling the long overdue Sabah issues, particularly the problem of illegal immigrants, which SAPP attributed to the failure of the Federal government to champion the cause of the people in the state.

This culminated, on 18 June, in SAPP proposing to table a vote of no-confidence against Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.

Yong said then that SAPP had lost confidence in the prime minister's leadership and declared that two of its members of parliament would support the motion.

SAPP has two MPs -- Eric Enchin Majimbun (Sepanggar) and Dr Chua Soon Bui (Tawau) -- and four assemblymen -- Melanie Chia (Luyang), Liew Teck Chan (Likas), Deputy Chief Minister Raymond Tan, who is deputy president and Tanjung Papat assemblyman, and Au Kam Wah (Elopura).

Subsequently, on 20 June, Abdullah said Yong was unhappy about this and wanted to contest the Kota Kinabalu seat, which was already allotted to Parti Bersatu Sabah.

If Yong was not greedy, he could have played a significant role in bringing positive development to Sabah, Abdullah was quoted as saying.

Aiyah... Bernama news...

The truth is: There really is no more BN spirit in the coalition.

Barisan Najis has ditched Sabah and Sarawak people since long long time ago.
They failed to see the bigger picture of Malaysia. They thought that Malaysia = Peninsular. They failed to champion for Bangsa Malaysia. They want only Bangsa Ketuanan.

Want real MALAYSIA spirit? See lah who celebrated Malaysia Day.

The main issue is the presence of legalised illegals ( from Projek IC ) that made the children and grand-children of the YB's potiential targets. Narcotics, snatch thieves ( whom should actually be categorized as robbers ), murderers, glue sniffing and other criminals are on the loose and no prison in the whole of Sabah is big enough to hold them.

SAPP left BN because of UMNO. And the other component parties should follow suit. Leave and watch the cookie crumbles.

Bernama news will always spin for their master....sigh...so sad.

SAPP is fighting for the rights of the people. You may view it at http://www.sapp.org.my

Raymond Tan is nickname by the public and members as 'Lateman Tan' because he has a habit of showing up late for functions and meetings.

In his time as chairman of Sandakan zone there was no single meetings held for the past 4 years. As the Deputy Chief Ministers and Deputy President who was appointed to these posts by the support of the members, Tan has never contributed to the other members except for his own CLC (constituncy liaison committee).

Thats why like the rakyat ditching PM now after high hopes in 2004 GE, members are not happy with Raymond Tan after his victory in the party elections.

He will tell you "just call me tomorow and when you call, he will never answer your call let alone reply your sms".

While the other components in BN are not happy, they are afraid not like SAPP even a small party.

For the record, SAPP was form before the Sabah state general elections in 1994. Leaders like Yong Teck Lee left PBS (leadership is actally like current PM)with members to form SAPP. PM Tun Dr. Mahathir with DSAI at that time requested SAPP to join BN. No one can deny that SAPP contributed to the awakening of the people of Sabah of their votings rights.

The original defectors at that time was UMNO Lajim Hj Ukim (noe depity minister), Rubin Balang. The others were PDS (now UPKO)& PBRS.

I write too long but thank you for me to share. Why? Because I was there!

The plan could have been hatched long ago, sometime in 2007. Well, in politic-speak, that's a long time coming.

Remember that Anwar was instrumental in bringing about the downfall of PBS back in 1994? And SAPP was formed at that time to challenge PBS. Their party was registered within 24 hours, and joined BN in even lesser time than that. The rest, as they said, is history.

Despite that, we should give PR a chance to govern the country. Just give them one chance. If we don't like them, vote them out in the next GE. We have had enough, a long and arduous 45 years, of BN's rule at the national level. The's long enough. Furthermore, I trully HATE the racial politics, the divide and rule tactics they employ.

Why can't politicans be really people-centred? Rather than self-centred?

Whatever it is...why the speculation?? Such speculations will only divert the attention of the seriousness of SAPP leaving BN to trival matters. My advice to Rayond Tan....grow up and be a man. You play by the sword and you die by the sword. This is politics 101.
