By Harap Rasa Sayang

Even if Abdullah Ahmad Badawi steps down to make way for Mahathir Mohamad, Ahmad Ismail and Khir Toyo, it will be too late to turn back the clock.

Umno's racial politicians would have discovered that the nation has changed irreversibly.

Under the tutelage of Pakatan Rakyat, Malaysians of every race and creed dare to dream of living in a country without fear of the ISA, OSA, arbitrary arrests, kangaroo courts, trumped up charges, false allegations, wholesale corruption at the highest levels of government and deliberate incitement by racist politicians to street violence.

Under Pakatan, the rakyat have learnt that it is their right to live without fear.

Under Pakatan they have tasted political freedom, and the freedom of speech and expression, and have witnessed first hand the power it lends them to hold the government accountable for its actions.

The rakyat want to build a nation based on justice, rights and equality, and not fear.

If the racist politicians of Umno like Mahathir, Ahmad and Khir think they can wrest back Malay voting power with threats, accusations, scape-goating, and fear against the racial minorities, then they will be sorely disappointed.

The Malays don't scare easily anymore anywhere in Malaysia.

Racist rhetoric and false allegations and attempting to create Chinese bogeymen or perhaps Chinese bogeywomen like Teresa Kok and the Sin Chew Daily journalist will only make the educated Malays ashamed of Umno.

Abdullah did teach Malaysians one valuable lesson.

It is possible to live in a less repressive environment. It is possible to live without fear.

However, when the fearless rakyat teach him that they want reform, he did not learn to listen. He listened to the corrupt warlords and racist chieftains in Umno instead.

Invoking the ISA to create fear and instability is unforgivable.

There will always be racist and unscrupulous politicians willing to inflict injustice to serve their own financial ends.

Nevertheless the new political environmant makes it more difficult to profit using this blatantly criminal racist approach.

It remains to be seen whether the new power brokers trying to make a comeback like Mahathir, Ahmad and Khir will have learnt this new lesson.

Malaysians of all races and creeds have learnt what it is like to live without fear under Pakatan. The Malays, Chinese and Indians who support PKR, PAS, and DAP are taught a new way to live. Ordinary Malaysians are determined to do the right thing.

There remains only one question, and that is to what lengths will Umno go to secure Malay votes. The Malays are the dominant ethnic majority in this country. They totally dominate the cabinet, parliament, police, judiciary, aristocracy, military, and government bureaucracy.

There is no reason for them to fear the non-Malays except that for the last 40 years, they have been taught to fear non-Malays by Umno.

Rich corrupt Malay Umnoputras are betting that the Malay masses will still support Umno's brand of racist, supremacist, corrupt, oppressive and divisive politics, robbing the rakyat of their rights.

Pakatan is betting that the Malays will want something better.

The question can only be answered by the Malays themselves when Umno starts its hardline racist rhetoric and racist incitement as leaders like Mahathir and others of his ilk battle inevitably with Abdullah for the Umno leadership.

What then will Malay voters choose for Malaysia?

I think it ought to be more apt to ask:
What then will the UMNO members choose for Malaysia?
For, they hold in their hands via the votes they cast in the divisional elections the type of UMNO that will evolve.
If they choose to heed the message sent out by millions of voters who voted for the PR, then they will know it is time to show the old warlords and racist leaders the boot.

You talk of fear as tho it was a political invention. In fact what the politicians have done is capitalise on a deeply entrenched philosophy of fear that pervades Malaysian society. The fear of the Malays is based on their religion which operates under a philosophy of fear. The fear of the chinese appears to be innate as they are inherently fearful of almost everything in their environment

Islam uses the fear of death, the life hereafter and Judgement Day to enlist muslims into their welcoming arms. They later reinforce that fear through peer pressure and their policing arms Jais , Jakim to enforce conformity with the rituals of Islam. And the ultimate indignity to a muslim man is the fear of circumcision. Just as young men are beginning to be assertive and think for themselves along come the power mongers of Islam to mutilate their manhood and their independence. Islam uses fear to further brainwash academics into total submission... so no more radical thoughts, .

All that the politicians of UMNO have done is to capitalise on that fear and they reinforce their "control by fear" philosophy at every opportunity. They have become so adept at fear mongering that all they had to do to suppress the fuel price rally was to mention that the army might become involved. They used the May 13 riots to strike a level of fear into the chinese that has persisted through generations. And they attempted to do the same to the Indians by arresting the Hindraf 5

If you want to live in an environment that is free of fear then you must look further than your politicians

We can only live without fear if we act against injustice. If we do not protest when someone is arrested under the ISA, then we will have to live in fear. If we do not protest when a innocent girl is kidnapped, murdered and burnt, then we will have to live in fear. If we do not stand up to people who abuse power entrusted to them, then we will have to live in fear. If we close one eye to corruption, then we have to live in fear.

I lost all respect for Badawi and his illegitimate BN government when I watched in horror the scenes of Hindraf supporters being beaten, hosed down with chemical laced water and dragged off to prison by UMNO dogs. Even the hysterical, elderly women folks weren't spared the full brunt of the UMNO dogs. It did not matter to me at that moment what race they were comprised of, what political party they belonged to or whether or not they had a 'permit' to rally that day.

What mattered was that these were clearly poor Malaysians claiming that they have been neglected and asking for justice and equality.

These people were clearly different from the "Bersih" rally folks that came earlier. They looked so poor and malnourished that at first, I actually thought they were Indian nationals or foreign workers!

What Badawi did that day was unforgivable! If a young girl who trafficks in 1kg of heroine deserves to be put to death for her crime, Badawi deserves to be at least boiled in boiling oil!
